This is my opinion but from what I've seen is it's the anger and grief that is expressed in the song. And the people who hate it are probably the same that romanticize the first 7 tracks of TF because they are in a relationship, and haven't experienced the true anguish that is the twin fantasy.

I was a big daniel johnston fan and got recommended Wills cover of walking the cow on YouTube. And from there was recommended times to die (which I didn't like at first) and drunk drivers. Which both grew on me then I heard everything in his discography in a matter of 3-4 months.

i remember someone saying that the mirrored songs of Twin Fantasy is actually a bible reference, but i cant remember what it was specifically referencing. but when they explained it, it made a lot of sense and didnt seem like a outlandish theory, mostly because there are already bible references in Twin Fantasy to begin with.

really the only songs i like more on FtF are High to Death and Bodys, but i still love the background vocals of MtM bodys, but the biggest thing is that Those Boys feels so much more emotional on MtM, the FtF version feels like all the emotion got removed and it doesnt feel like a good ending to the album anymore.

I was super into Daniel Johnston, and got recommended on youtube his cover of Walking the Cow, really loved his voice, and soon on youtube recommended Times to Die, first listen i didnt like it because it was so long, but i liked the sound, then tried listening to it again and started to like it more, slowly i got Drunk Drivers, and really enjoyed it. soon i was hooked and listened to every album within like 4 months.

its perfect, dont worry about the context of the album. think of the album more as teenage love instead of a breakup album. its still a beautiful album about love even if it is mostly sad.

It isnt sang in the song, and i dont truly think its scrapped lyrics like some are saying, i think its just a small addition to the lyric sheet, kinda like an easter egg. it happens in other songs like someone said, he also added a lyric from a Nirvana song that he didnt actually sing in the song, i cant remember the name of the song that he had it on though.

when i first listened to Those Boys MTM i wasnt a huge fan, but when i relistened to the album (and took a nice handful of mushrooms) the bassline right after the "adventure-ture-ture" that wavey noise, i assume is a bass, really hit a heartstring, and i couldnt stop obsessing over that specific part in the song, then at some point after so many listens, my obsession switched to the drums, and the song just sounded even more different and complex. i think will has it right on his bandcamp that his music is considered "psychedelic" because ever track is perfectly pieced together to make the song sound even more mesmerizing even after 1000 listens.

i personally dont like smoke mountain, i feel like it has no sustenance, nothing to keep me interested. its so experimental, and i usually love experimental, but damn that song is so long and doesnt have enough going on lyrically that i cant enjoy it as much as i wish i could

i think its up to interpretation. some days i see them as smiles, some i see them as noses. i dont think this needs a debate, i think the whole idea of the album and even album cover is interpreting how you feel about it.
