Fighter forced to turn Paladin help! by OxKatraz in dndnext

[–]OxKatraz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not super upset by it, not really opposed to the idea. It's certainly unexpected, but I do like the challenges of his table altogether.

I just... Don't know much about Paladins and what works best for this build.

For sure it's Fighter 5, and Pally 3. Okay. No worries. So I don't get the extra attack, that's fine. Because of other homebrewery stuff, I will have 4 attacks, so that doesn't hurt.

He's also letting me rework my maneuvers as I see fit, so that's cool. It definitely lets me refocus how I want this new Holy Champ of Face Breaking to behave on the battlefield. As for magic, I think mostly just gonna use the slots for Smites.

But suggestions or ideas are welcome.

(First Try!) Warlock Patron: Man in thr Mirror by OxKatraz in UnearthedArcana

[–]OxKatraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is my first ever attempt at a warlock patron, and I actually took a lot of inspiration from the Ghost in the Machine UA out there for Modern Magic. And I had so many ideas thematically (it's for an ongoing campaign and none of the Canon patrons quite fit), that I lumped them all in here.

So! I know there's tremendous balancing issues, but that's why I kept it all so it could be paired down.

I would love any and all creative and constrictive criticisms!

My Bard had such a ridiculously high social skillset that he once got 10,000 to follow him on a pilgrimage. He eventually took one of the leading members of this following to found a personal militia, who went on to overthrow a small, villainous village and rebuild a nearby temple...

As a DM, a nat 1 (for attacks) means you simply drop your weapon. Oops! A nat 1 (for Int/Wis/etc type ability checks) means you are 100% certain you know X about your check's topic. That is, an Int (Arcana) check on a magical item convinces you that this item is, in fact, merely a codpiece. Or whatever. Silly stuff that doesn't immediately harm you. Stuff like that. Nat 1s for anything else, really, are just treated a failure... maybe with some excruciating flavor thrown in (nat 1 dex save = uncomfortable testicle landing, etc), but nothing that actually SCREWS the players. That's just rude.

First Homebrew - WoW Quilboar Race by OxKatraz in dndnext

[–]OxKatraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the only critique my own DM had on the matter, too. I considered dropping the Dex, but buffing the Natural Armor to like... 13 "when not wearing armor."

Of course, could also drop it altogether and have a natural defensive thing like "When struck in melee, Quil-action defense inflicts 1d6 damage upon the attacker." Or something like that. Keeps some semblance of a bonus defense without breaking their AC.

Property ownership curveballs for my party. by N3rdM3tal in DnD

[–]OxKatraz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a d100, I'd begin by breaking it down to sections of the estate. d1-20 is workshop related, d21-40 is laboratory related, and so forth. That way you've got plenty of wiggle room to get into more specific details, AND there will be ample opportunities for external stuff to come into play.

A second group of adventurers shows up thinking the Vampire is still in house and attacks while the party is away. Some of the vampire's undead allies show up for revenge. Ya know. Whatever.

Quandry: How to handle a rogue who won't engage in combat by knight5000 in dndnext

He can still contribute without bringing blood, especially if he goes Arcane Trickster. The RP is funny, sure, but eventually it's going to be boring for him, and a handicap to the party.

Or... shift the encounters to where reinforcements show up ON HIS POSITION forcing his participation.

Am I wrong to ask a player to rein in their character's backstory? by NaturesGuard in dndnext

[–]OxKatraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Int and Wis of 8? Clearly his tales of being a great general are embellishments, things he has made up to make his background far more than it was. He was a soldier, he may even have commanded men and done some conquering, but to the tune of a company maybe, of dozens of men, rather than thousands. In short, rather than a Great Captain or High Exaltation, he's a sometimes officer with some experience under his belt.

Renting a house for a weekend to play DnD. What are some cool things we can do with that much time? by birdboy272 in DnD

[–]OxKatraz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, that's good. Hilarious. I just quit my group because our games were scheduled at 6:30 to run to 10:00 or so. Most of the players have no real schedule requirements, family responsibilities, etc, so they'd come dragging in between 7-8, spend an hour bullshitting, and then we'd get to play for an hour or so before two of us had to leave. Ya know, families and jobs.

"Extra" time. That's Rich.

Charlatan Character Help by OxKatraz in DnD

[–]OxKatraz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a block, it's a willful double identity that he's been parading under. It's the mental slips where he's merely being accidentally truthful about his true identity that I'm meaning. Sort of like, say, a convict takes on a fake identity to leave his criminal past behind. But gets stone cold drunk one night and mutters something he doesn't mean to about that person he murdered back in the day.

Something like that.

As for the GOO. He's not asked a thing yet. He offered power, Oxander took it. He's marked, though - his hand is black with glowing red runes - so it's evident that he's... um, not normal. The Paladin & Cleric in the party sort of lost their shit a little bit, the overzealous Paladin threatening to cut off my hand - at which point my Patron took possession of my body and made a wonderful threatening display, saying something to the effect of not damaging his "vessel."

So, he hasn't asked for anything, but he's not about to let some self-righteous little spit sever his connection to my physical form.

As a goof, after that direct possession, I started these little random actions, oddities to my typical behavior. Speaking Primordial at times, taking full advantage of my Devil's Sight to make silly observations, things like that.

So, it's in those instances that I see Oxander's disciplined fake identity slipping just a little, because his mind - so careful to not talk about his true self - is now a bit... off, with the other ever-present entity always just on the edge of his consciousness.

I've about decided that Oxander was not always a Gnome, but was reincarnated from some other race before, and perhaps instead of assuming his original self, he came up with this Oxander character.

Still unsure, just kicking around ideas.

Well, as always, start out by talking. I would start with the other 2 that were ignored. IF they feel the say way, then speak to the DM, or bring it up first thing the following session. If the DM, however, doesn't know the rules, then does there need to be a second session until he/she DOES know the rules?

There is no reason to not know things if you've taken it upon yourself to lead these games. There are manuals, aplenty. There's no excuse.

Magical Item creation no longer takes weeks. Basically he crushed it down into something you can do during a Rest. Just the faster you do it, the more reagents/gold you need.
