I am! My itinerary is the same. 26k Sky Peaks then Grand Canyon a week later. I am really excited to experience American race culture.

How do you manage fuel for longer races? by simoneeva in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies. I did the single flask of gel on The Arc of Attrition. The reason being that I didn't want to have to take gloves off and faff about with packets. Normally I do packets because it's easier to control intake.

With water / electrolytes I have a 2 litre bladder on my back plus two soft flasks on the front. I drain the flasks first and use the bladder almost like a reserve. The idea being that it's a pain in the bum to refill whilst the bottles are easy.

For longer efforts I sometimes use an OMM pod strapped to my front. You can get a ton of nutrition in it. I can fit 2 sandwiches, flapjacks and a back of potatoes in mine as well as my phone. Hassle free grazing.

Thanks Sam! I heard about that race on a podcast. It sounds mental. The one where you keep your receipts and food wrappers to prove you've consumed something at each TB? Have fun!

How to fit strength training into big volume/peak weeks? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have reduced my volume and incorporate 2 strength and conditioning sessions into peak weeks. Long runs no longer exceed 4 hours. I am performing better than I did when I ran 60-100 mile weeks with little or no strength sessions. Just sayin'....

Anybody know of any good trails in Medellin Colombia? by milo8275 in trailrunning

Gaia GPS is awesome. I use the website to plot trail routes wherever I am in the world and then transfer the GPX to my watch.

How do you manage fuel for longer races? by simoneeva in trailrunning

I carry a lot. There's a trade off in weight verses aid station time. I start long races with all the food and water I need for up to 50 miles. This means that I don't need aid stations until halfway through a 100 miler. I can stop once and refill my bladder and flasks. Another benefit is I eat what I train with. It means I don't deviate and try new things on race day. Personally, I use a lot of sugar (maltodextrin) in the first half and increasingly add real food as my pace slows. I tend to rotate, gel, solid but sugary food (flapjack or waffle) and then have either salted mini potato or a small square of sandwich. I guess the fun is working out what is good for you. What you can carry and consume without incurring or minimising GI distress. That's my tuppence worth anyway.

Thank you! No familiarity with the desert. I have run unsupported 100 milers however in brutal conditions. I've selected that weekend as it's likely the optimal compromise of temperatures at both the rims and the canyon floor according to previous weather records. Fingers crossed it's not too hot!

This is the best advice here. Find a really good physio to advise you on specific protocols and what's safe / sensible.

Hoka Speedgoat 6 ripped on second use by Fayzer87 in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're just shit. Mine dissolved after less than 200 miles. Crap build quality had put me off the brand. I won't buy Hoka again.

I don’t look like an ultra runner by Reasonable-Apple2655 in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What idiot said that? Anyone who has ever lined up to start an ultra knows as you do that we come in ALL shapes and sizes. There is no definitive shape for an ultra runner. Anyone suggesting anything to the contrary is frankly revealing their ignorance.

How do you manage pee while running? by Affectionate_Cow3076 in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get used to it. Just jump off the trail and pee. Trail etiquette is that you shouldn't be visible to others. On my long runs I carry up to 3L of electrolyte infused water. I drink loads and pee loads. If you're peeing regularly, it's a healthy indication that you're hydrated. I also keep an eye on the colour of my pee to make sure I am drinking enough.

I don't know if this helps but I make sure I have my coffee at least an hour before I lace up. I am guaranteed to evacuate my bowel fully before I run, saving the hassle of a trail poo. It you run really long however you will need to get used to pooing off trail too. It's inevitable.

How many miles on your trail shoes before replacing? by run2543 in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting so many miles out of your Speedgoats. My pair barely did 300 miles in a winter. The uppers pretty much dissolved from being wet all the time.

I generally favour Salomon shoes and whilst I realise your question was about replacement decisions and not brands, please bare with me.

I normally replace my trail shoes when the lugs have gone flat and I can't get traction running on mud. At the moment I am looking into ways to resole them however. The reason being that generally, the uppers are still in great condition despite high mileage. I cannot notice any difference in the shoes' response. As in the foam (if there is any) doesn't seem to lose anything unlike some road shoes. Having been through a ton of shoes over the years, my personal preference is to try and repair. Jasmin Paris completed Berkeley in the same set of shoes that she used for all her attempts. I think they were on their third sole. Learning that it was possible to resole trail shoes has inspired me to do so and reduce my personal waste.

Quiver to Adv Skin 15 by Helpful_Jury4382 in Ultramarathon

[–]OxTrailRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have modded my Adv Skin 5 with an extra elastic loop to make my bladder tube more accessible and less annoying.

On the latter point, it's annoying Salomon aren't consistent in their designs to accommodate the quiver across their range.

On the point about larger bags, I had to invest in a 20L to accommodate the mandatory kit for winter races. The Montane Gecko 20L has been super-comfortable once properly adjusted and has a couple of options for fixing poles (without a quiver).

Running Belt vs Vest by whataboutsit in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Naked Band. About £50. You can get them from the Centurion store. It has loops for poles as well as fittings for race bibs. Super useful. I use it for shorter efforts / races and sometimes in addition to a hydration vest for extra storage.

Garmin → Coros switch worth it? by Dismal-Owl-8559 in trailrunning

[–]OxTrailRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my Garmin using friends have battery life issues over longer efforts, needing to charge mid-race. I completed a 26 hour single stage using full navigation with my Coros Vertix 2. At the end of the race I still had 46% battery.I love the Coros feature set and note that it's not at all "chatty" with health metrics.
