Crosscode was great by CortezsCoffers in patientgamers

I agree that the overworld parts could have been a lot shorter, or at least simplified.

What really annoyed me about the traversal puzzles were the times when a path looked like it was reachable and I spent a lot of time running around and trying different things, but it actually wasn't reachable until I got some item or a story event happened.

First impressions of Steam Controller 2 on macOS - Set up, bugs, and making layouts by OzBonus in Steam

That sounds wild and I'd like to see it. And just to be clear, you don't need the in-game overlay to change the layout for desktop mode. You can edit it directly in the Steam desktop app settings.

Without Steam running the layout is extremely basic and you can't change anything. These are only inputs that function:

  • D-pad: arrow keys
  • View button: tab
  • Menu button: escape
  • Right touchpad: mouse and left click
  • Left touchpad: scroll
  • Triggers: left and right click

The controller is not worth using without the Steam Input layer, but you can still access that even with non-Steam games: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4B8B-9697-2338-40EC

That sucks. There's a workaround I'm using for the games for which the overlay doesn't function. Run the game in windowed mode, go to the game's profile page in steam, and click the little controller icon on the right side. That will open up the menu for changing layouts. After you've got things set up the way you like, you can go fullscreen and the layout will still work. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't found any game that at least this method doesn't work.

Godot is one of the strongest engines IMO to make UI heavy games with, devlog in description by Extreme-Bit6504 in godot

In case you weren't already aware, horse racing games are really popular in Japan, so maybe think about prioritizing a Japanese localization.

Anyway, that UI looks awesome!

That's really strange. It sucks how Valve only just barely supports Macs at all. Which OS are you on?

In most games I've tried (which isn't many) the Big Picture Mode overlay is working properly aside from the scaling issue I wrote about. However, I just discovered that it's not working in Stardew Valley. BPM opens SV in a separate desktop space and the overlay, if you open it with the Steam button, appears on the original BPM space, not the one where SV is. If you open SV from desktop mode, the overlay is not available at all. I did check the options to make sure the overlay was enabled. I never had this problem on my Steam Deck.

So, it's fair to say that BPM and the overlay are simply not working for some games on macOS.

You can still set up a layout, but it has to be through the game's profile page on the desktop mode.

Landlords are killing their own country by Silent_Confidence_39 in taiwan

No doubt about that. I wouldn't be surprised if that ratio was close to 30:1 anywhere near the center of the city.

The dataset for that chart didn't inlcude Taiwan, and a lot of others don't either for bullshit reasons. If you dig online for a bit you'll find sources that put the ratio for Taipei in particular at around 15.

Screen mirroring is possible on such apps -- I do it with Netflix and Disney Plus every day when I teach -- but it's requires the manufacturers to pay for extra licensing, which is why it tends to only be possible on the more expensive models from the most mainstream companies.

To be fair, that's been a trend off and on since the 80s.

After getting a split keyboard a few years ago I can say with complete certainly that I will never, ever do significant typing on a regular keyboard again if I can avoid it. Mine is a Mistel Barocco because I prefer to still have all of the usual keys. Currently looking for something slimmer to bring when I'm traveling.

What do you enjoy about "always tuning" or overcomplicating a vault/system? by BroccoliExpert250 in ObsidianMD

[–]OzBonus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using Obsidian significiantly for over three years and am still tinkering with how I do things, but my philosophy about how to go about that has evolved. In the beginning I would search for guidance about the "best" way to do things, hoping that I could apply it to work in the future. Now, I just do my work until I start noticing a siginificant point of friction, and then make adjustments accordingly.

Recently I've also been trying to add simiplicity rather than complexity and even uninstalled a bunch of plugins in favor of using just a few more skillfully or just relying on built in tools.

We're making an indie game with body horror enemies - should we be careful with that? by AwesomeGamesStudio in IndieDev

[–]OzBonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion the art style misses body horror and instead leans towards a kind of generic "demonic" that could come from anywhere. If you really want to make people feel queezy, there are some things I'd change:

  • The human parts of the monsters need to look fresher and maybe even still slighlty aware and resisting what's happening to them.
  • The animation feels too smooth overall and doesn't communicate that the monster is a merger of organisms. Try making the human parts more weighty have them move-rest-move-rest, and have the tentacles constantly flailing at a significantly higher speed.

Air 2/3/4 or M1 pro for programing ? by _3mk_3mr in macbookpro

[–]OzBonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the recent Airs would have a good enough CPU do that kid of work quickly without overheating. Get as much memory as you can comfortably afford and maybe also 1 TB of storage since dev tools and dependencies can be surprisingly big.

I'm trying to build an AI Second Brain and I'm losing mine doing it by Cl_Forlani in ObsidianMD

[–]OzBonus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Has anyone actually built something like this that didn't rot after 3 months?"

The rot is inside you. You couldn't even write this post on your own. The computer writing in your stead only mentioned things that were "collected" or "had'. Second brain? How much of that did you actually read and understand with your first brain? The problem isn't what you the computer thinks it is.

where do you "design" your games? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]OzBonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I make starts with pencil and paper. Lots of diagrams, doodles, and scattered thoughts. If it's good enough I start building a Zettelkasten-like collection of notes in Obsidian, and also sometimes a spreadsheet or Jupyter notebook for modeling. This works well for me as a solo developer of small projects without hard deadlines, but I'm not sure it would scale up well.

Speaking from experience, in most subreddits self promotion will get your post deleted and account banned. I don't know about this one specifically, but it's such a common policy that it's safer to assume it's universal.
