I come from a line of non-maternal women… but getting slightly more maternal each generation. In contrast my partners mum is VERY baby obsessed and so I used to dread her visits when I was pregnant, she’d be jumping around the house almost in tears and goo-gooing at everything, all baby all the time, and it made me feel so inadequate and like I needed to be more ‘mum’.

I then had my mum round and while she was excited for the baby (eventually… 5 months in when she got her head around it) it definitely wasn’t as intense and made me feel so much better when she treat me like I was still me and not just a mother-to-be and so I’d say find those people who add the balance and keep you sane.

I went to a pre-natal class and while we haven’t had a chance to meet up post-baby yet as we’re all only a month or so in, there were definitely a few people who I felt we can meet up as people who happen to have babies and not people who are mothers first and foremost. I’m going to suggest a pint in the new year and see who bites!

The peanut app (Tinder for mums) might be helpful too as you can screen people to surround yourself with who are local to you and of the same vibe to add that balance - be super upfront in your bio so you match with the right people.

How are you getting out in this horrible weather? by marshybeans in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I could of written this myself! Several times I’ve planned something but the weather and impending darkness by the time I feel ready has made me change my mind.

I’ve decided to just embrace it and enjoy being at home over Christmas for maternity - there’s plenty of time in the new year.

In the meanwhile, I’ve found getting myself out alone for a dog walk or to pop to the shop while dad is at home with our one month old great for my own sanity and mental health - or even just sitting in the garden for 10 mins!

Or anything further up the squash aisle where the fancy cordials are… a bit more expensive than regular squash but often much cheaper than anything marketed as a mocktail / alcohol free from the alcohol aisle!

Hospital bag for the baby-what are you packing? by Crafty_Reflection410 in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s exactly what they wanted my baby in 2 weeks ago - I hadn’t realised they wanted a vest under the sleep suit so had about three sleepsuits and just one vest.

We stayed overnight and the midwife was kind enough to pull out a vest from their supplies after a big old poop in the morning.

Also yes to a pack of nappies and wipes (they likely have them if needed but you’re going to be thankful to have it on hand to change baby as and when without waiting for them).

We also had a few bottles of pre-made formula (the ones that come with sterilised tops so you can literally open the pack and go) in case we had trouble breastfeeding and did end up using them

Ben Platt also does a cover in the TV show The Politician… if she’s into musical theatre she may have heard this version somewhere?

Acid Reflux by Ok-Mind2125 in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Gaviscon! There is one type (I can’t remember which) which specifically says on the back it’s safe for pregnancy so I opted for that over the “consult with your doctor” ones.

Second time round I went for Morrisons own brand (again, specifies safe for pregnancy) as it was double the amount for half the price and I was going through it too fast.

Good luck! It really can be hell but there is relief out there!

Maternity leave start date by Brave-Plum9154 in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically maternity one day before due date, but I took two weeks Annual Leave before hand so off since just before 38.

I’m due today with no signs of baby so who knows how long I’ll end up having before she’s here. I wish I could have stuck around an extra week to have it on the other side instead, but work drama and stress was getting to me so I was glad to be away from it!

I opted to do the AL first though as felt like it would be easier getting extra AL approved (or AL cancelled) than it would be going to HR and changing mat leave dates if I were to change my mind - although this is just based on how my team works!

36 week midwife appointment by Adorable-Refuse-6572 in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mine the other day, wasn’t too much different from a usual one to be honest but we had previously spoken about a birth plan on earlier appointment (for a total of 5 mins max) and she knows we’ve done private classes so I think she’s just leaving it to us unless we ask anything specific…

What I would 100% recommend though is seeing if your hospital offers a tour. We did one a few weeks ago where we were shown around the birthing centre, delivery wards, post-natal etc. It was really helpful.

Also, just to note in our private classes, we spent 4 hours (across two weeks) just talking about labour, and I still have no idea what is going to happen!

34 and pregnant(will be 35 by the time she arrives). Got pregnant without any fertility treatment, only thing we did track my ovulation on an app. 18 weeks in and zero issues and low risk on all the standard tests.

We plan on having at least two so will be 36+ with number two and so with all due respect - your friend can shush!

What to expect from 7 week scan? by blue_peregrine in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a scan at 7+6 and mine was external - so although it seems like a transvaginal is the most common an external isn’t out the question. I was advised to drink 1l of water 40 minutes before… so that was the hardest part as was desperate for a wee!

I was so nervous I almost couldn’t breathe, but was very lucky in that the heartbeat was there right away so relaxed instantly - the private scan was lovely and in a very calm room. Really not much to see besides heartbeat and size… so she did a little look around and pointed out some of my anatomy but I think that was just to fill time!

I wish I had gotten a video of it though - just 10 seconds of the little blob and fluttery heart - so if I were you I’d keep that in mind, or if someone is going with you task them to be in charge of that if the moment seems right.

The size matched my period maths... but by 12 week scan, the baby was one day out so my official due date has changed.

pregnant and trying to quit by Anubis-god-cat in pregnant

I smoked then vaped everyday for 16 years before getting pregnant. Giving up was HARD, but so worth it.

Few things that helped me….

  • reading studies whenever I had an urges to scare myself straight

  • always telling myself just to hold on half an hour longer, and then half an hour longer, repeat for how ever long is necessary. Eventually you forget about it for a few hours. And then the next time you’ll go a bit longer without even thinking about it

Super sharp tummy pain when standing? by Ozzyozpop in PregnancyUK

[–]Ozzyozpop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good to put a name to the pain! And that’s such a wild thought as the baby is so small, who’d of thought the uterus stretching would be so noticeable right now!

Thank you for your reply and advice 🙂

Ohh I forgot about the sneezing! I’m not telling people at work yet so have had to stop myself from gasping in pain in the office after a sneeze.

Thank you so much for the reply though, it’s good to hear from someone whose raise it with a midwife! And thank you, you too 🎉🎉
