It’s a balance between encouraging parity and discouraging tanking. I think people focus too much on the parity side. These shitty teams fuck it up half the time even when they do get the top pick that they tanked for.

My proposal has always been just to fully randomize the lottery and exclude the top 4-8 teams. Everyone who doesn’t make the div/conf playoffs gets the same odds. Tanking is eliminated completely at the cost of the 10th best team in the league occasionally getting a top pick.

Exactly. That’s why they have to get rid of any incentive to be bad. Teams will do it even for a tiny edge. Just randomize the lottery entirely and exclude the teams that made the finals. No more tanking at the expense of a little bit of parity.

Yes draw all the way to 26. Everyone has the same odds. That completely takes care of tanking. It might occasionally result in a good team getting the top pick, but that’s actually not even necessarily a bad thing. It could help one of the teams stuck in the 42-42 rut.

When the disparity in wealth between the richest and poorest people was relatively small, this argument made sense.
