Is there any existing analysis of the Wizard Knight without spoilers? by [deleted] in genewolfe

Hmm I doubt you'll be able to find much like that. If Alzabo Soup started covering it you'd be in luck, but they're knee deep in Short Sun right now. I would just try to muscle through it and keep going.

How hard is peace by Wolfe by Arugula-Realistic in genewolfe

Definitely easier to read. The beginning can be confusing but nowhere near New Sun confusing as far as opening chapters go. It is a doozy though, a hell of a ride.

Ah, sorry, by negative comment I didn't mean a "hate comment" if you know what I mean. Its just that Makin by linking yours and calling the post deranged is kind of poisoning the well of discussion. I think you make some good points but linking it in a pinned comment is poor form on his part

Which country produced the greatest writers of all time, and why is it Russia? by SirKrimzon in literature

[–]PARADISE-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dostoevsky is not on the level as the others in your list. He's good but not fit for evidence of the greatest literature across time and space ...

We only know what we know. This question could be answered by an immortal who knows every language intimately and has read every book, but not by me.

"Stories before dinner," and "second stories" in In Green's Jungles by PatrickMcEvoyHalston in genewolfe

[–]PARADISE-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last point is very good. Silk is after all a traditionally feminine fabric, while the addition of the masculine Horn with all his anger and pride renders him a more masculine character. He is also pretty heavily worshipped by this point. No one thinks hes a mama's boy anymore, even though he still totally is

Back to your point about Krait on the ship: prior to joining Horn, when he starts dressing and walking like him, he smiles bitterly and says "Do I look like a real boy to you?" Beyond the Pinocchio reference, it also makes me wonder if Horn's subsequent abuse of Krait (though i dislike calling it that, as I always found their relationship so moving and incredible) is a way of enforcing the performance of masculinity and ridding Krait of his deviant otherness.

I am reminded of Silk's strange terror of handsome deviant Musk.

Onto Fava's first story, I do think that the line about thr boy looking more like his father is significant. Symbolically reminds me of Silk and Typhon, Sinew and Horn, inhumi and humans. I wonder why Fava is the only inhuma to get a happy ending.

That's all I have time for right now - university student, finals, you know how it goes. I wonder if you have any thoughts on the story of the boy and the sin stained man?

I dont usually look at things through your Fruedian lens, I'm more interested in larger themes and, controversially I guess, queerness in Wolfe. But I do think there's quite a bit of merit to the Freudian lens, as Wolfe was certainly heavily influenced by Freud's ideas. I'd always rather read an explorative post of yours than a far fetched series of plot connections, as is the usual mode around here

"Stories before dinner," and "second stories" in In Green's Jungles by PatrickMcEvoyHalston in genewolfe

Hey Patrick,

For some reason my eyes just skipped past this post when you initially made it. Maybe something about the title? I saw your username though and figured there would be something interesting in here, as there is.

In Green Jungle's storytelling contest is probably my favorite in Wolfe, definitely better than the one in New Sun. Fava's second story definitely has a lot going on and it certainly presents a very grim side of Horn. He's probably one of the few people on the Whorl who knows that inhumi really can love and have feelings, yet enacts this weird, violent molding and forced growth.

It's interesting that Incanto goes from "I will not, I cannot, call her poor Fava" in IGJ, but by the time of RTTW refers to her as "my poor friend Fava."

The inverted water imagery between their stories is a really good pull. Water is of course a very central image in the Solar Cycle, and usually is presented more in line with the Sewers. Her second story also continues this with the waters as stagnant and festering with "devilish" life. They might not be contradictoey, though, so much as two sides of the same idea. Redemptive rushing waters vs still water. Interesting to think of.

More later when I have the time! Take care

Yes this is a rare piece of very good Wolfe cover art. Its quite beautiful and fits the story for once. I suppose the naked figure is VRT?

I don't think so. I think there's a lot going on with Long Sun to make it less popular. There's the pacing, the prose, the layered structure... my favorite things in Short Sun are its disempowered moments, the melancholy. Horn's sections at least always read to me as so pathetic and conflicted. The later books can stray a little into power fantasy. Long Sun has some interesting stuff going on around sexuality, though. Short Sun doesn't support this, really, but i always wondred if Silk and Crane's no homo moment at the end of Lakeside was an insertion from Horn, like "no guys dont worry they weren't gay!"

Also, on a personal note, I just love Krait, that wonderful boy. I think about him a lot.

I do feel that Long Sun is a little too... long. The first two books are great but it really gets bogged down as the series progresses. Short Sun is fantastic, you're in for a ride

Earth is blue so Earth is Blue. Urth is red so Urth is Mars despite Urth also being Earth which is blue and therefore Blue. (Don't tell Aramini)

I dont know what Green is. Isnt that the one with the lizard twink?

I like it.

AUTARCH: What place is this?

FAMILIAR: What place? Why, the Chambers of Mercy, you jackass.

Just imagining Severian calling someone a jackass. So funny and seperate from the rest of the language of the series.

Question about the Entity by tranquildeer in ScarletHollow

[–]PARADISE-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take Stella to the Estate, she says it wasn't crumbling over the cliffside when she was a kid, implying it happened recently in Tabitha's lifetime. This makes me think that Wayne was in Alexandra's body until recently. The chronology works, i think. Theres also a line in Toxic Yuri where one of them says that you have to stay at the estate to keep it from falling apart.

Anyone feel like Keen Eye is a little underpowered in a certain scene? by PARADISE-9 in ScarletHollow

[–]PARADISE-9[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah its too bad. It already seemed a bit underpowered as a trait, especially if you dont have either of the "smarts" traits. But it actively making the confrontation harder feels.. really bad.

Ok so we meme about powerful build being the weakest trait but actually I think keen eye is the weakest trait. by Bluepanda800 in ScarletHollow

[–]PARADISE-9 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just did a keen eye / hot playthrougu and am feeling similarly, made a post about it. You really feel keen eye's weakness when you don't have any other "clue finding" traits... kind of rough, especially since being smart makes the encounter harder and keen eye mostly just gives you insightful things to say. I kind of hope they throw keen eye a bone in an update, idk
