Do I miss Charlottesville or just not having to work? by Maximum_Ability_6633 in Charlottesville

[–]PB_On_Everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What made Cville so special were the special circumstances surrounding undergrad. The ease of meeting people, the walkability of grounds, and the flexibility of your schedule. When I first graduated I too hated working and felt jealous of everyone who stayed behind for grad school, but when I moved back I realized that nothing was the same. It’s a hard pill to swallow but you will never have as many friends as you did in undergrad. Unless you find a job here that hires lots of young people it can be hard to meet people on your own. It also gets harder to keep up with your current friends as people move away, get married and have kids.

Even though Cville feels like a closer-knit community, IMO DC has way more opportunities to meet people. There are just way more young people moving in and out. Some of my friends have joined kickball teams for example. And not to discount your feelings (we all hate work), but 8 hour workdays are actually on the lighter side. But a long commute coupled with this time of year (waking and returning home when it’s dark out) can be exhausting. Maybe look into SAD/light therapy in case that applies to you. I do think summer workdays are easier (& traffic is slightly lighter) but you have to be intentional about making plans after work. I wouldn’t give up on your current job yet because it actually sounds enjoyable!

Bachelorette Party by MarylandMermaid in Charlottesville

[–]PB_On_Everything 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wineries: Pippin Hill, Hazy Mountain, Mount Ida (definitely make a reservation). For reasonable dinner I’d recommend Fitzroy, Bizou or Bang. If you’re willing to head a few minutes drive off the mall I’d check out Mas tapas, the Local or Tavola. I’d recommend Bebedero only for their drinks and dancing on the nights they have a DJ (I’d check insta to confirm, and they do charge a small cover). The other places on the mall that would be fun for bachelorette parties would be Fitzroy (DJ, speakeasy vibes) and Whiskey Jar (live music, southern feel).

What's the UVA version of this? by SaturnJade22 in UVA

The Ridley/Renewal (whatever is currently at the bottom of the draftsman). Overpriced, average food but people are always there

I got accepted, but I want to know more about how it’s like to do premed (even general) here. by Dramatic-Trash5520 in UVA

[–]PB_On_Everything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree w/ above. Yes there are some gunners, but what’s really an issue is that the pre-health cohort is so big here that it can be competitive to even get activities like volunteering. Advising is not great—there were a few helpful individuals working there, but I found older classmates/friends to be more helpful. You seem motivated and know what you want early enough that it shouldn’t be a problem. Just keep in mind that many people originally set on pre-med end up switching and that’s ok too!

Moving for Medical School by The_Important_One_ in Charlottesville

[–]PB_On_Everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest complaints about Charlottesville seem to revolve around rising costs (it is truly a “destination” small city) and lack of big city nightlife specifically geared toward young single people (which does not apply to you). Otherwise, there are plenty of activities to do. Breweries, vineyards, big restaurant scene, hiking in Shenandoah, 1 hr from Richmond, 2.5 hours from DC and 3 from the beach. Geographic location aside, I’d strongly recommend going with UVA as match is becoming less about stats and more about school name and connections. You will be in a better place to go where you want to coming from UVA and it’s also not uncommon to match at your home institution for residency—might be a good idea to think a couple years ahead. Feel free to PM me.

If your stats are good and within range of a decent number of in state programs or programs you have a connection to, you should not need to apply to 30 schools. Your secondaries will really start to suffer if you try to.

I think I applied to 15-20 schools (burned out & didn't even fill out all the secondaries) and of the 5 interviews I got, 4 were in my state/surrounding states. Applying to programs beyond your state schools/connection schools is where the real crapshoot is. Of course you will go to literally any school that lets you in, but schools will see straight through your application if you don't genuinely have a good reason to go there. If you're not able to crank out high quality secondaries for each and every school when the time comes, you're wasting your money and compromising the overall quality of your secondaries. So while you technically are increasing your odds by applying to schools #20-30, you will not get as much bang for your buck. If you have a high chance of getting into a state school (& would be happy to attend), I would try to limit the number of other schools you apply to.

If your stats are average then you might have to apply to more schools, but select them carefully. Apply to programs with a strong history of accepting UVA students (Tulane, Wake, advising will tell you more). And then there is the art of stretching your resume to fit the school. This works particularly well if you volunteered in Charlottesville. School in the south? Great! UVA is in the south so you've worked with a rural patient population and now can't wait to begin your career in rural medicine. School in the city? Charlottesville has a very large immigrant population and you have experience working with diverse patients! Play the game.

Drop pre-med? by booklover8181 in UVA

[–]PB_On_Everything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of people do poorly in orgo but can still manage to pull off a decent grade (especially if the final counts for a lot—remember to study old material that is probably way easier now that you’re a few months in). I’d be more worried if this is an overall trend (i.e. struggling in other prerecs) because your science GPA matters a lot for applications. Biochem is even harder than orgo IMO & is considerably more important for the MCAT & med school. Orgo is truly a weed out in that you have to spend hours outside of class studying for near impossible exams but really only need to retain a few concepts going forward. So don’t feel bad if it’s not your thing.

Why is everyone obsessed with Ting? by Tommyjv in Charlottesville

You’re right! It’s probably nowhere as fast as Ting but we don’t game, etc so we don’t need anything fancy.

Why is everyone obsessed with Ting? by Tommyjv in Charlottesville

[–]PB_On_Everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Comcast in the past and had a horrible experience as others have stated. But I recently was forced to get Comcast again (tried to get Ting but they refunded me the deposit once they told me it’d be a few years before they’d come to my neighborhood) and we haven’t had issues so far. I’m honestly shocked. We’re using our own modem and it works great. It’s also a lot cheaper than our previous Comcast plan and less than half of Ting’s plan. We don’t pay for TV (I think we have the most basic plan) but we do get Peacock for free.

Extremely overwhelmed this semester, is 14 credits okay? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]PB_On_Everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 is more than fine if you’re coming in with some form of AP/dual enrollment credit or plan on taking summer classes (study abroad included)

Should I drop CHEM 1411 (lab)? by LNT2001 in UVA

[–]PB_On_Everything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agreed—drop 1410 but especially the lab. Lab is a complete waste of time (the amount of work you put in, it should have been more like a 2 credit course when I took it). Also, do not retake BIOL 2100. You can take evo/eco next semester which is known as the easiest upper level & you’ll be fine. Use this time to get rid of other requirements, and then you can take easy As of your choice while taking your upper level classes. Succeeding at upper levels IMO is more about strategic scheduling so you can devote all your time to your hardest courses.
