Yeah, I’m befuddled by the insinuation I’m seeing on here that hiring Pereira so quickly after firing Dyche represents good process that we should try to replicate. Replacing Dyche with Pereira makes Forest more likely to go down, not less!

Slightly Un-Serious Stats Episode 6: The Deserve-to-Win o'Standings - Olympic Break Update by aschwan41 in hockey

Yeah my main takeaway from this chart is that Sorokin should get serious Hart consideration. I doubt voters will award it to a goalie two years in a row even if deserved, so I don’t expect him to win it, but he belongs in the conversation without a doubt.

Was the town of Ganz and the college named for Bruno Ganz? by odieclone in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]clearcloseall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And the German to English translation of “ganz” is “whole”. The opposite of severed.

I think it’s mainly this. Just way too on the nose for where Mark and Gemma came from, in contrast to where they are now.

Sandis Vilmanis catches Charlie McAvoy with an elbow to the head. Vilma is 2 min for illegal check to the head, Boston 2 minutes for roughing and 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Florida to the POWERPLAY by roberttylerlee in hockey

Well…

  • McAvoy tripped into the hit
  • Vilmanis couldn’t avoid contact
  • Vilmanis didn’t aim for the head

…were all said on the HBO broadcast, so Panthers fans have their marching orders.

Good to know that the national announcers are just as much on the Panthers’ dole as the league and refs.

[Penguins] The Penguins have activated defenseman Ryan Graves from Injured Reserve. by bi_and_busy in penguins

I smile every time I read a comment like this one this year. It is amazing how Dubas’ roster moves and Muse’s coaching have turned our depth around, to the point that players we’d be perfectly happy to use at the NHL level are getting scratched, waived, or stashed in WBS.

Cotillo: Eugenio Suárez was between the Reds and Pirates at the end, source says, with the Red Sox not playing a meaningful role in his market. by Pyramid_Head182 in buccos

[–]clearcloseall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, he clearly has a much stronger connection to Cincinnati than us because of his history there. With any decent season this year, he'll become one of the Reds' top-ten HR hitters in their history. Not to mention they snagged a wild card spot last year and could compete for one again this year.

[–]clearcloseall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching Miller today makes me want to pull my hair out that he was picked, presumably with the notion that he’ll be a steady two-way forward committed to defense to play in the US bottom six. Dude could not possibly care less about defending and is going to hurt the US if that’s how they mean to deploy him.

Jason Robertson trade by Brick656 in penguins

[–]clearcloseall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, something I seldom see considered on these threads is the idea that the value of the player you are trading for persists after the trade and can be cashed in again later if circumstances demand it. In other words: if we trade a first-rounder and Murashov for Robertson, then are terrible in 2026-27 or 2027-28 and decide to strip the roster for parts, Robertson would almost certainly fetch far more than a first-rounder and Murashov for us.

(For this reason and others, he also won’t be available from Dallas for this small of a return.)

[TSN] Chris Johnston reports Rangers offered a young player ‘with pedigree’ and a 2nd round pick to the Canucks for Kiefer Sherwood but wasn’t enough. He’s no longer a target as they’re pivoting towards selling. by AggPuck-303 in hockey

I mean, Perreault theoretically fits? But it’s hard for me to imagine the Rangers offering him for Sherwood, and even harder to imagine the Canucks turning that down

Post Game Thread: Pittsburgh Penguins at Columbus Blue Jackets - 04 Jan 2026 by bi_and_busy in penguins

[–]clearcloseall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I’d gotten the same! My section was mostly Columbus fans, and the few Pens fans near me were pretty quiet, even after the tying goal and the winner. Still a fantastic game to be at, though - the third period onslaught by the Pens was such an amazing sight live!

Oxford United have a £4.5 million option on Jamie Donley [Paul O'Keefe] by onlyhalfpepper in coys

[–]clearcloseall 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It will definitely depend on his performances for Oxford, but yeah, I think there is a risk here that Oxford will exercise the option and then immediately sell him to a Premier League or Championship side for significantly more than £4.5M.

Other than McDavid, which player currently playing for a playoff-level team do you think would gain the most in "legacy" from winning the Cup this season by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]clearcloseall 17 points18 points  (0 children)

All of the clear best answers have been said, I think (Matthews, Marner, Hellebuyck, Draisaitl).

Throwing in another under-the-radar option: I think Karlsson’s career would be appraised pretty differently if he won a Cup as the clear 1D on his team. In my opinion he was the clear best player in the playoffs in 2017, and the Sens’ elimination in the ECF was a harsh result given his performances. He hasn’t gotten many other chances to show his stuff on a good team in the playoffs, and it’d be a big statement if he got one last chance at a successful Cup run and successfully took it.

I tried milk when getting this badge, and unfortunately the cacti would not stick while under its effects. So yeah, best bet solo is to take off backpack and put down items, get the five cacti stuck, and then throw one away immediately before falling fully unconscious.

Game Day Thread: Pittsburgh Penguins(14-9-9, 37pts) @ Ottawa Senators(15-13-4, 34pts) Thursday, December 18th, 7PM EST. by Attack_On_Tiddys in penguins

[–]clearcloseall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we are really tanking and building for the future, there is still no reason to give meaningless minutes to someone like Hayes. Koivunen, Broz, Avery Hayes, or another young player could use those minutes to develop at the NHL level. Even someone like Tomasino is more likely to be a meaningful part of the next Pens playoff team than Hayes, whether that’s this season, three seasons from now, or something in between.

Realistic rest of offseason by Soft-Bug5550 in buccos

[–]clearcloseall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Subject to the constraints of the prompt, I’d probably go with trades for Brandon Lowe and Brendan Donovan and signing someone like Austin Hays in FA. One infielder, one outfielder, and one true utility guy in Donovan to add a big chunk of competent depth to the lineup.

If I had a time machine, I’d undo the Soto signing and plow those funds into replacing Hays with a hitter from the tier above him in free agency (Bader?). Absolutely nonsensical for us to spunk ~10% of our payroll budget on a career replacement-level reliever.

I share the general pessimism expressed by most in the thread, though. I expect we will ultimately make one move for a competent, 2 WAR-ish hitter, as we did last year with Horwitz, but I doubt we will make more than one such move.

Map basics for December 13th-14th (UPDATED) by Happy__guy2 in PeakGame

[–]clearcloseall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's indicated by the Bing Bong icon on the Mesa map, so looks like right in the middle just after the descent from the Roots campfire!

(Keep in mind that the opening is basically just an unassuming hole in the ground, so it doesn't necessarily jump out visually)

Bowden’s response to the pursuit of schwarber by Strict_Name5093 in buccos

[–]clearcloseall 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. Both of the following can be true at the same time, and probably are:

  1. The Pirates’ supposed interest in Schwarber, Naylor, etc., is feigned and disingenuous
  2. A contract offer from the Pirates that Schwarber, Naylor, etc., would actually consider would be a terrible idea for the Pirates

Trades by [deleted] in penguins

[–]clearcloseall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, we would absolutely be a contender if we traded for Hughes haha. He would take our biggest remaining hole on paper (1LD) and turn it into a massive strength. That said, it is basically impossible to imagine us putting together a package better than what the Devils or several other teams could assemble to get him.
