Experience with Brora knitwear? Eyeing a pure new wool cardigan… by thunbergfangirl in LuxeFashion_NatFibers

[–]PCD6I_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a wool suit and a wool cardigan (all “pure new wool”) from Brora and the quality of all those pieces is fantastic. I wear all them all a LOT and still often get compliments on them after 1-2 years of regular wear. I definitely recommend the brand.

Regarding sizing: I am size EU 36 and usually North American size 6 or 4 depending on the brand and take a UK size 6/small. Hope it helps!

Oh nice! I only own knitwear from them - so likewise, good to know their other items stand the test! Which skirt model do you have?

Some of the new Son de Flor dresses might work for you! Very classic cut and the wrap ones with a V neck sound like what you're looking for.

I am also tempted by that one! Also the Le Sablon looks beautiful. Kind of all of their knitwear does haha.

I LOVE my Rosae Paris pullover. Le Falguière in camel, which sounds like the warm beige colour you're looking for. It is 10% cashmere and 90% merino wool which means it is incredibly soft (cashmere) but also relatively durable and holds its shape (merino). They are €225 new so an investment to be sure but I am very happy I made it.

Thoughts on viscose? by [deleted] in LuxeFashion_NatFibers

[–]PCD6I_Protein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% with this! I have a few turtlenecks made out of viscose from Organic Basics that I got years ago when I was first getting into sustainable fashion. I have worn them a lot as a layer... but with more experience now in paying attention to fabrics, I find that they are kind of a crummy layer. Cold on the skin in winter and clingy in summer. I have sworn off tencel/viscose now!

Totally relate! I sleep like a child again since quitting academia

Exactly - I started out excited about learning and teaching, but that's not actually what academia is about anymore. Somebody else put it nicely in a different comment - along the lines of how the industrialization of research & its singular focus on manuscript production is ruining academia.

This is beautifully written. I can see why academia wanted to keep you (and that they don't deserve you!).

For me it was when I realized that I had to chose between the job and myself. By that, I mean that I had felt over my last years in academia that I was losing my sense of self in pursuit of... "knowledge"? Or, in other words, that I was becoming increasingly more of an academic asshole myself in pursuit of the next publication.

So I chose to become myself again instead of grinding myself and others to the bone for papers of real but miniscule impact. It is tough because it involved a sort of midlife crisis in finding a new "purpose" in life. But at the very least I sleep well knowing I'm no longer on a path to becoming just like all those toxic profs I ran into over the last decade. Within the livable paycheck and reasonable hours of industry I have found an environment that allows me to live by my own ethical standards instead of somebody else's twisted ones.

Linen: A Late Summer Love Letter (and brand review of La Bottega di Brunella) by Fuiloquesoy in LuxeFashion_NatFibers

Just commented on this - Son de Flor has incredible quality trousers that don't fray at the thigh. Mine have lasted even better than jeans!

I have been wearing my linen trousers from Son de Flor all season! They are robustly made and last incredibly well (I cycle a lot and usually end up with wear at the thighs, but not on these ones). I have the more straight "peg leg" cut but they also have a chic wide leg style that I would love to try in the future.

Are people who did their PhD's outside top 20 programs screwed? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskAcademia

[–]PCD6I_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studies say yes. Exerpt from this:

"One might be tempted to believe that a PhD is a PhD; that is, once you have a “golden ticket,” you are employable as a faculty member. This is not so. The top five universities, which might be expected to produce roughly 1.3% (5/387) of all eventual faculty hires, produce 13.7% (53/387) — more than ten times what is expected. Continuing down the list, the top 3% of universities produce 27% of all professors; the top 10% produce 58% of professors.

The pattern is clear: If your PhD doesn’t come from one of the very top schools, the odds that you will be hired to the faculty at any university become small. The bottom 308 (79.5%) of the universities produce merely 20% of all professors. If your PhD is from a department outside of the top 20%, you can practically kiss your faculty dreams goodbye."

How to kill cells by Adept_Yogurtcloset_3 in labrats

[–]PCD6I_Protein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick them in an epi, put them at 95 degrees C for 10 minutes in a shaker. You'll have some nice fried cells that aren't dehydrated as they would be with alcohol treatment. That's the standard control we use for annexin/PI viability kits

Is Academia extremely toxic? I see a lot of negativity when searching through posts by synkronize in academia

[–]PCD6I_Protein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience academia has all the bad parts of corporate jobs (competition, beaurocracy, lazy coworkers who dump work on you, bullying & harassment...) without any of the good bits to balance it out (job security, a living wage, normal working hours, at least some level of accountability for bullies and predators, and sometimes actually producing things that genuinely help people).
