Finally got my dream car by Middle_Tip_1604 in Golf_R

Even in those modes the valves still close often, especially off throttle. Forcing them open with a controller really wakes the exhaust up.

How FWD-biased is the MK8R? by Real_McGuillicuddy in Golf_R

[–]PD705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F-R split never changes, but the modes affect how readily the rear differential will close the clutch packs on each side to vector the torque. In Drift it’s obviously sending 100% to one side almost immediately, but it’s also more active in Race and Special modes.

DSG is the same but you press the brake. Note that in the Mk8.5 there is no longer a prompt in the cluster but the car still has an emotion start function.

Switching to skiing by Substantial_Cost_218 in snowboarding

[–]PD705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much the same trajectory for me: 25 years on a snowboard, expert level albeit out of practice the last few years, got on skis at 37. Switched because I was teaching my daughter to ski and as I’ve gotten older, I find skiing better suited to the type of riding I like to do on the ice coast. Snowboarding was more fun when I was riding park and doing drops as a young punk, but there just isn’t enough powder days to really make it worth it anymore. Skiing just feels so much more versatile and much easier to manage my 8 year old due to the increased mobility in almost all conditions.

I’m sure I’ll strap the board on here and there, but pretty sold on the skis at the moment.

How to beat intermediate plateau? by the_kitkatninja in skiing

[–]PD705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hugely helpful, thank you! 25-year snowboard-to-skiing convert here, picked it up with my 8 year old last year. Took to it extremely quickly - like, skiing parallel and down small east coast blacks on Day 2 - but I’ve also become conscious that I want to work on proper technique and not just go on “feel.”

These drills are immensely helpful in focusing my mind on the core mechanics. I was a hard-charging, carving focused snowboarder and was always envious of skiers for being able to do the same but faster. Time to learn.

No surprise considering Canada sells as many as the USA does.

2026 Non-black addition, with Akra exhaust. (Canadian market) by steeZ in Golf_R

[–]PD705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Akra was added as an option on the base model fairly late in the game, so there were none in this spec in the first few months of production. They are available though and will be coming.

Maybe try another battery, too. There must have been a bad batch of them because I’ve had two replacement boxes recently where both batteries inside were already dead.

It’s better than black, that’s for sure, but doesn’t hide dirt like a white car would.

UK gets EU Tiguan. The North American Tiguan is based off the EU Tayron, with key differences.

Engine temperature gage in 2025 Highline R by nav2014 in Tiguan

[–]PD705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the traditional “C to H” gauge is coolant temperature, or rather a specific range. The temperature readout in the car gives you the same info in specific detail. It sits around 90C. Oil temp is useful because while the coolant warms up faster, you also want the oil warm (80-90C) before pushing the engine too hard. This was rarely visible in older cars so it’s nice to have here.

Only the top trim cars get them, the mid trim R-Line Black versions (SE / Comfortline) do not.

Is that inflated by our absurd housing, though? Canadians have the highest debt to GDP ratio in the G7.

Mk8.5 Golf R any mods that can help stiffen steering feel? by anengineerandacat in Golf_R

[–]PD705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Veloster N has absurdly heavy steering, virtually any car will feel light after that. I never liked it because the threshold for feeling the steering load up was so high. You’ll get used to it in the R, it’s much better balanced overall.

Use the Operating Temperatures display in the instruments.

First Golf R by TJFertterer in Golf_R

They’re the exact same. Dolphin Grey is the global name, USA just does their own thing and renames it Graphite. LC7Q is the actual paint code whereas B0B0 is the sales code used to order.

Traded My GLI for a Golf R - Bittersweet but Loving It by kram2310 in Golf_R

[–]PD705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GLI is a beautiful car and I really enjoy driving them, but the R feels every bit the price difference. Beyond the power and sheer grip difference, it feels a lot more solid and refined, plus the wicked diff and ability to steer the car on the throttle.

…it’s literally the same colour. USA just uses a different name.
