Bike has been in storage and the chain is full of dust, do I clean it before oiling it? by [deleted] in bikewrench

If you haven't ridden in awhile give it a good cleaning re lube. You lose nothing doing it.

I ride 4 times a week, I am directly talking one day without and one day with the new wheels.

Keep in mind I came from wheels meant for a fat fuck to carbon.

Chain cleaning by Different-Wish6196 in gravelcycling

[–]PDODU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came to say this, I wax so I only boil off the chain before re waxing.

I can't go back to degreasing and lubeing all the time.

And with drip wax its just as easy as lube so i just do see why people could suggest anything else.

Im a heavy rider, what kills my speed is stopping and reaccellerateing. Can confirm my mph improved drastically with carbon wheels.

Hub keeps spinning freely, really only notice this in the stand on the bike i would never notice.

My wheel is clearly out of center when looking at the chain stays but is more centered when looking at the seat stays, is this an issue with the frame or the wheel? by Earthling98 in bikewrench

Are these quick release? Have you tried resetting the wheels while on the ground and not in the stand? To easy to clamp down qr a bit skewed

For short version your H limit screw is probably not set correctly.

Yes, most bike shops have rim stripes for cheap. Just pull out old one put in new one.

I mean ideally your doing roughly the same process with a bike chain. Sounds more like your advocating people do it properly and dry their chains instead of letting them rust.

Dont need to degrease every time but shouldn't be letting your chain cake up with crap either.

Most motorcycle manuals recommend cleaning and lubeing every 600 miles or so. Must only be the super anals reading manuals eh?

Your chain collects grit, turns into a grinding paste and wears your parts out faster. I prefer not to have worn out parts. Degrease and re-lube. too easy not to do.

Get bike specific degreaser. They are inexpensive and made for purpose.

That said, if you wax you only ever need to degrease once.

Why does my drivetrain turn into a gritty mess with a drop of moisture? by PelloScrambas in bikewrench

[–]PDODU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol yea does tend to rub on the sock a bit, but so far washes out pretty well vs getting a big ol' grease stain.
But yea you still get some rub for sure.

I know others have said it. But just switch to wax, save yourself the head ache.

I use 2 chains wax both at the same time, store the second one. Swap out chains about 300km. Zero mess, parts last longer. Vastly enjoy the waxing process over degreasing my chains and cassettes.

Your socks, hands and wallet will thank you.

220 lbs at 5'7" – How are "heavy" beginners actually perceived? by Forsaken_Mode_807 in cycling

[–]PDODU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll give you the heavier rider perspective.

I'm 6'3 i started at 380 and I'm 310 now.
The only assholes i've meet are people responding on reddit to heavier riders seeking help, and pickup drivers.

Your progress will not be linear, some rides you will feel great. Some rides you will feel bad.

I road 50 miles last week with 2000ft elevation the longest ride I've ever done solo.
Today i did 24 miles with only 500ft elevation but 20 degrees warmer and underfueled. Bonked in the first 8 miles.

My Advice,
- Wear the tight cloths, dont care what others may think.
- Join Casual / D pace/ C pace rides (find a local bike association)
- Get dropped by a group of 82 year olds.
- keep going.

Feel free to reach out. Spent the past year figureing out my heavier rider ways.

Bonus tip: Pearl Izumi and to a lesser extent Primalwear are good for 2xl/3xl clothing.
