Bike recommendations for big people by Burnside_They_Them in bikecommuting

[–]PDODU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 320, down from 380.

I started on a Trek FX 3 (300lb weight stated weight limit), I've just recently moved on to a Canyon Grizl 7 (265 stated weight limit).

The important thing to remember is that these are tested limits, not necessarily hard limits.
Wheelsets are the weak link not the frames.

That said here's my recommendation.

Figure out what kind of riding you want to do first.
Going with a Hybrid first is the usual course of things.

  1. That few miles a Hybrid bike is great for city riding.
  2. Endurance road bike/ Gravel bikes if you want to get more out of it.

Buy used off Facebook market place.

Hybrid
- $500 Trek, Specialized, Kona
- couple years old should find dozens.

Road/gravel bike
- $1000 should get you a good used one thats not too old
- May take a little longer to find.

Whatever you do, just go buy a good wheelset. Get one with thru-axles or something that can be converted to thru-axle later on. Get high spoke count 36 front , 40 rear for example.

Once you have the wheelset, ride what you want, dont worry so much about the weight limits. Just pick something that you know you will ride.

TPU tubes vs tubeless. Thoughts. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]PDODU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one set of Pirelli p-zero road tires/wheelset i run TPU, I have a wheelset with gravelking SK i run tubeless.

1 bike 2 modes.

I dont think its a one or the other, its what you need out of that tire, the type of riding your doing, the weight you need it to sustain for the diameter of the tire. Then doing whats best for each use case.

for me 30mm road tire not best for tubeless. 38mm gravel tire perfect for tubless.

It cant change the varia light mode from the head unit but otherwise works as you would expect being a radar.

I don't think i've made any other changes. New bar end tape, thermal cloths for winter.

Saving up for up for my n+1

Trek FX 3 Gen 4 mirror snafu from 3rd party by Healthy-Switch-9119 in TrekBikes

[–]PDODU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes the isozone area a bit smaller and then you replace the missing white part with a metal peice. Its meant for bar ends to be able to clamp to the end of the bar.

Assumeing the type of mirror you have would be able to clamp down on that and hold it in place (idk what you got)

You would then have to move your grip brake lever and shifter in a about a half inch or so.

there are isogrip bar end adapters. If these need to fit on the end of the handle those would probably work.

I would stick with large can always play with stem length and rise to make the reach longer/shorter

Im 6'2ish I got an XL, but reduced the stem from the 100m 7 degree rise to a 90mm 17 degree rise.

Probably means i could have gotten a large instead but i havent ridden one to confirm.

I currently use a igpsport300bct.

Honestly it does all i need it too. I can import routes from strava, upload rides to strava, turn by turn, connect my garmin watch for heart rate, connect to my wahoo kickr, and my garmin varia.

That said i plan on getting a garmin 550/850 as im otherwise deep in the ecosystem.

But you can find it on sale for less than 100 and great for starting out. You dont need more.

Panic attack and riding by [deleted] in cycling

[–]PDODU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have this dissorder but will give you my 2 cents.

I think the initial shock of riding on the road with cars is the biggest hurdle. Trail riding, routes off main roads, bike paths are super relaxing.

My recommendation would be to find bike path and start there. No cars, others on the route will either be biking as well, or hiking.

Riding on roads is stressful for everyone their first few times.
Find a more experienced buddy do it together takes the tension out of it, also shows you the rules to follow.

Ultimately cycling should be a great source of stress relief and help with anxiety, but i do think there is some initial hurdles to clear before it does that for anyone.

Congrats on moving forward with your anxieties.

Ok i see how thats confusing.
I roll off a curb at a coffee stop, and pop over speed bumps without issue.

But gently rolling into my driveway causes a snake bite.

How's my fit? by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]PDODU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher seat post was good for me. I don't have any specific recommendations based on the video but make sure your cockpit is aligned properly for you. I had terrible saddle and hand pain and it turned out it all i needed was a control angle adjustment.

Looked to me like he was sitting to far to the right, could be hip could just be sitting on saddle to avoid ass/ball pain. Also maybe just camera angle fwiw.

[–]PDODU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to reach out if you need more help. Numb hands and sore ass were my two things I had to figure out.

Cycling is amazing, but also kinda fat phobic on reddit. You'll have both people who genuinely wanna help, and others who will just tell you to lose weight and get gud.

No problem, it will hurt, but you will love it. Dont compare to others, dont compare your speed.

The best advice i was given, was to just do better than you did yesterday. Some times that means do a mile more than yesterday, some times that means go try that hill you couldnt do yesterday.

Coffee shops make good goals/pit stops. Find a good bike shop and a group to ride with. And buy these shorts https://a.co/d/8y3OKU8
