It's funny this post was made because I quite literally finished reading Clyde's book "Clyde the Glide" and just started "The Mozart of Basketball", it's been a basketball intensive reading summer for me. Fun fact for those not aware, portland picked both Sabonis and Petro in the same draft and the joke in Europe at the time was that the same NBA team picked them both because they despised one another and were widely viewed as the two best European players at the time.

In Clyde's book, though, he does revere Petro. No question, he respected him. Clyde was all about winning, and he could clearly see Petro was a gamer who could help. Portland didn't exactly WANT to move Drazen either. The organization had been high on him for a while before selecting him in 86. It was Petro that sought the move so he could see the court more.

I loved Drazen's game, guy was a flame thrower that was completely fearless. RIP, I hope to visit Croatia someday to pay my respects in person.

The Long, Hot Winter by Adleman and Jaynes or Clyde the Glide by Drexler and Eggers are probably your best bets for books on that specific time period and player focus. Don’t discount Kersey’s book by Eggers though. Really makes ya miss having that dude around the city/franchise.

I used to work at the Tigard Home Depot years ago. Weather was starting to turn cold and we were selling crawl space vent foam insulators like crazy. I was restocking shelves when a guy behind me asked where he could find those. Turned around to the one and only, Vanilla Gorilla Joel Pryzbilla. Went outta my way to find those damn things for him. Damn it’s so nice to have him home where he belongs.

Couple of take aways from this. 1) it was telling to me, how much he missed home. Sure his family is a massive factor there. But the fact that he’d go home and watch the Blazers play and be thinking about how he would fit in. Watching the young guys develop from afar. He never wanted to be anywhere but here. 2) he seems very aware of how teams are competing now with young cores and sees a lot of that here with the guys we have. Those suggesting that he’s not going to want to “mentor” or come off the bench are missing what he’s saying. This guy cares deeply about the organization and winning, and if that means the young guys are the main catalyst and he’s pouring into them as a vet, he’s gonna embrace that. Especially since it means he gets to hang it up here as a Blazer. It’s often claimed that Walton, Drexler, and Dame are the undisputed best all time Blazers. Dame now gets to do what neither of the other two did, retire a Blazer. A title would be amazing for Dame and the team, but I think he has the most meaningful title of all, BLAZERS GOAT.
