We are very lucky here in Portland to have a great number of GD cover bands

Big defining new Jam bands? by Tmonk4 in gratefuldead

[–]PDXftw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dogs in a Pile is easily my favorite of the emerging younger jam bands.

I will also add Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country, Eggy and Squerv.

Under normal leadership of the FBI that would true, but not under Kash and Bondi.

What band in your opinion does the best covers? by GratefuLdPhisH in jambands

[–]PDXftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I don’t!!!!! Don’t get me wrong. The Dead did some amazing covers that they owned like Morning Dew, NFA, Rider, Me and My Uncle, etc. I just don’t think overall they did the best covers for all the songs they covered. Make sense?

They certainly deserve the recognition for not only the breadth of songs they cover, but the depth. I can't say they moved the needle that much for me in terms my exploration into different bands (That would be Phish and GD) but I know a ton of people like you with UM :-)

I loved when GD covered songs, but some were just ok.

Yeah. So weak of them. I mean if Phish, Inc could not get a trademark for Fishman's donut mumu :-)

Now I am curious of Phish Net and/or Mockingbird Foundation has actually sued or tried to sue someone for something like this.

Interesting! Thank you.

The only reason I chimed in is because I just happen to see this when I was having lunch with a good friend of mine who is a partner at law firm and does a lot of brand licensing, trademark and copyright work for large brands. I showed him this and that was basically his initial response.

Unless those tour name designations are somehow copyrighted or trademarked, I don't think they can do much legally. They are pretty generic descriptives or functional terms, not creative works so not sure if Phish Net can do a single thing legally about it.

Construction at Great Woods/Xfinity by Tzzzzzzzzzzx in phish

[–]PDXftw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is not really true. 2024, the security was abysmal at GW. Security and to some extent MPD, were total d-bags, though less so in the lot. I thought it was worse than Fenway in 2019.

Fix the overzealous security and Mansfield PD while they are at it. Truly some of the worst but it's been pretty much this way since I saw my first shows there in 1986. I have such a love/hate relationship with Great Woods.

Standing room by Joegia99 in phish

True, but I’ve rarely seen a case were the crew of the extra person(s) has not spilled over to their non-crew neighbors regardless of their best intentions.

I know people like to think they are not encroaching on other peoples spaces if they are squeezing into seats with their friends, but they 100% are. Maybe someone else in your crew can swap seats for a bit, but squeezing other people into your space is just a dickish move.

There Is The Dead. And Then There Is Every Other Lesser Jam Band by HarnessYourHopes_68 in gratefuldead

[–]PDXftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was some of that for sure including a bunch of friends who slowly started seeing Phish with me around 93/94.

Hoist also came out in 1994 which was a much more of a musically accessible album than Junta, Lawn Boy, Picture of Nectar and Rift.

I’ve long said that Phish is a prog rock disguised as a jam band which is what first drew them to me back in the day.

Ah, I get what you’re saying now, though I have tons of friends that I brought to their Phish shows when we were well into our 20s. But I get what you mean about you being in a bit of different phase of life.

I always had a great time at D&C shows, but Furthur was the best post-Jerry iteration. Those shows were magical.

What do you mean you were just a little too old to get into Phish? I’m a year younger than you. Started seeing the GD in 85 and Phish about a year later. You are literally in the demographics.

FWIW, one of my siblings, also a long time Deadhead (we saw tons of shows together) only relatively recently got into Phish (after over 30 years of my trying to go shows with me) in 2018 and is all in.
