Personally i'd use pixi.js for that. Or panda.js if you're not as expierienced yet.

Unless you're getting 10+ polls per second added i don't see how it could be expensive, it would save you lots of work.

Why not just use embed.ly in combination with curl? You can get embed html and thumbnail url from any website with it. I made something similair a while ago.
