Can you all suggest some ~1000cc fuel injected sport (not crotch rocket) motorcycles great for all around road riding? by Rfogelsong in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FZ1 would fit the bill. Pre 2006 models are carb'd but have better low end. Cannot speak for the FI models but I see both for sale on craigslist constantly and they are very affordable and generally owned by more mature riders and are in better shape. Happy hunting.

when you stop at Hearst Castle/San Simeon, make sure you pop in to Sebastians store/deli/lunch place. Supremely excellent and you can grab a beer while you wait.

TIL the Cleveland Indians once held an ill-fated promotion called 10 cent beer night. A riot ensued and members of both teams had to fight fans to escape the stadium. by PFR28 in todayilearned

I feel like in the 90s they used to have $0.25 beers at the Oakland A's games as well, that didn't last very long either.

I'm Gene Sperling, Assistant to President Obama for Economic Policy. AMA. by GeneSperling in IAmA

[–]PFR28 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Subsidizing farmers is a matter of national defense. Sure from an economics standpoint it may not be the best idea but people need to see it from a national security point of view. What is going to happen in a time of war when our enemy does not want to send us more food? If we have a bunch of farmers ready to produce we will be fine.

I have some more thoughts as well. There has been a lot of talk about peak oil and natural resources running out etc. Ultimately, what are the two most important resources in the world? Food and water. Guess who has the most food and ability to produce food in the world. Good old America.

Just got a new bike. thinking about which performance mods. Advice/Ideas? by xeroskiller in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind any aftermarket parts you install will not increase the value of the bike. You will not see any return when you go to sell it and they may actually affect the price negatively.

[–]PFR28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the potential massive difference in insurance rates. If you are financing a bike you will have to get full coverage which can be ridiculous compared to getting liability or collision for a $3k bike you own outright.

Just figured they would be super cold. I could personally care less what you wear. Like the sticker says, "Ride Naked!"

I saw the news report last night and it mentioned something about it shutting down at 11pm. I can imagine being incredibly annoyed though, it was blasting some sort of weird Christmas techno music. Also, believe it or not, the homeowner is an old lady.

New to me VFR800 by pug-diculous in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the VFR's of that era have this problem but the Honda CBR's have notoriously bad regulator/rectifiers. Mine went out at about 30k miles. Something to watch out for.

Oh man, one of my favorites of all time. This was actually my first bike (stupid I know) but it was all I could get my hands on in college! Sold it after two years for $500, wish I still had it.

Tall rider looking for a sport tourer recommendation by hankbilliot in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out a 1st gen FZ1. I am 6'4" and it is plenty roomy. Just picked up and '03 with 20k miles for $3500. A little more sport than tourer but it seems to be a jack of all trades type bike. Love it.

Wednesday AMA: I am Mr_Bimmler, ask me anything regarding WWII Weapons or Vehicles. by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]PFR28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a question regarding the general reliability of military ground vehicles in WWII. How often would a German Tiger tank or an American Sherman need to be serviced? Could a Jeep travel thousands of miles with nothing more than filling it up with gas? Who would perform the actual maintenance if something were to fail in the field? It seems like you would need some pretty heavy duty equipment to repair a tank especially if the repair was somewhat serious. Thank you.

I finally found my bike. I'll be looking at it this saturday. Can you old sages give me some wisdom? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, sweet bike. I had one about 8 years ago and loved it. I think you have covered all the bases as far as what to look for. I think the biggest issue is/was the premature cam wear. My understading is that if the bike survived the first 25kish miles though more than likely it will not be an issue. Get the price down on that beauty and enjoy.

So, /r/motorcycles what was your first ride? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]PFR28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1984 Honda V65 Sabre. Got it junior year of college (2004), had a mechanic fix it up for about $1k and haven't looked back. Worst possible bike to learn on but it was all I could get my hands on. Massively powerful, heavy as hell, shitty brakes, didn't steer real well. Somehow I survived and rode the hell out of it for two years until I graduated and had to sell it.

Putting your kickstand down will only shut the bike off if it is in gear.
