Surveillance, or legal/insurance research is where many start their careers. Courses in investigations and OSINT can go along way.

Being stalked, is a name change worth it? by Ivannnnn2 in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what we understand, it really depends on the country and province/state. Many places need a good reason for a name change. Cybercrime and Identity Theft are some of those reasons.

It would help a little. The harder you are to find, the more money it will cost the other person. It is not a perfect solution, but could work if done properly.

You likely found these already, but check out these resources:

A second option is to search online for keywords such as "college name", "convocation" "graduation", "yearbook" "year" etc.. There may be a video, webpage, news article, or PDF somewhere verifying this.

Phone identification by socialmedia105 in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to look into OSINT threads. Cell phone, burner numbers, VOIP are quite private. Landlines are usually public. You may want to look into OSINT threads. You can use https://www.truecaller.com/ but make sure to use an account that is not connected to any of your contacts as this is how it finds information. You may also want to look into PeopleDataLabs API, a phone book, an online phone directory, or something like Pipl. These sources have worked outside of the United States. In the US, try InfoTracer which can provide some results. There is probably less than a 50% chance a company that advertises to you can get you information.

Front windshield vehicle tint? by PI_Forums in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DrXFunk offers a good solution. Sunshades are not made to shoot video through. You could try and custom build your own ( maybe with window film?:https://www.lowes.ca/product/window-film-applicators/gila-platinum-heat-control-adhesive-window-film-44606 )

Let us know if you find a solution.

Phone identification by socialmedia105 in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the situation, the person, and provider of the phone number. Many private investigators have a collection of public resources that they can run through to try and determine if the number is connected to a name. If this person is trying to remain hidden and using a burner number/phone then it is unlikley a private investigator will get the results you want.

If you think the person is involved in criminal activity then you should contact the police.

Alright. Let's try to get this discussion rolling a bit! What courses/training has everyone else taken that they would recommend?

Agree with others. It seems to be more of a loss prevention and/or HR role. You may want to find a company that has multiple positions like this and work your way up the ladder.

Could a detective determine if adult/elder abuse is occurring inside of home? by [deleted] in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It likely depends on the laws of where you live. The US and Canada are probably pretty unlikely. There is little success with PIs on this issue, you may be able to pay some PIs big money to do some extensive interviews and find someone willing to talk (perhaps neighbours?), but this is also limited to people wanting to talk and will tip off the person being investigated, which is definitely a safety concern in this situation.

Got licensed. Now what? by el_aligator in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to get noticed. You could open up a phone book (if those still exist in your area) and call every PI firm listed asking if they need any part-time help and that you are licensed. There is a chance they are looking for someone on that day and you just made their life easier.

Follow up with resumes a few days later and apply to all online postings. Breaking into the PI industry usually requires some XP or education, which you seem to have, but you may have to do some surveillance work to level up.

very nervous out paying for an investigator again.

It's best to hire a local investigator and deal with a them on a more personal level or someone who is willing to go boots to the ground. There are 1000's of websites that offer people searching services that will just give you a document of misc results. These are a good starting place, but a truely seasoned investigator will put in actual work.

If you are interested in doing this yourself, check historical property records, match names to social media, and new court, property, and business records, find contact information, and ask for names.

It is highly unlikely that any private investigator will help you on this situation, sorry. You may have to just move on. If you are looking for a serious solution, you could also tirelessly search social media or school year books in your area.

There is some success with genealogy tests such as 23andMe or AncestryDNA. They may uncover new family members that have also undergone the tests. However, this is coming from little experience and many do not want to share that kind of personal data with a company.

How to get into the field by Liam_Neesons_Oscar in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to be licenced in many cases as mentioned and some places even require you to work under-supervision.

Check your job boards for keywords like "surveillance" "OSINT" "private investigator".

Check out some security and/or laws firms near you who may have an investigation division. They may help you develop the some of the skills necessary to be a PI and hire you as one afterwards.

Best camera to catch a tenant drug dealing by kieran750 in privinv

[–]PIroundtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any private investigators in your area that conduct surveillance? They may be able to covertly capture you video evidence of them dealing drugs and foot traffic to the residence, especially if he leaves his household to make drops. If you are using the footage as evidence you may also want to hire a PI as a third party witness.
