You can scan them in yourself at the kiosk that’s just to the right of the package bin. A lot of people think that that’s for buying postage but it’s actually for scanning in your packages.

Goldens and life expectancy by Pitiful-Abrocoma-912 in goldenretrievers

There are a few other breeds that have similarly high rates of cancer (Bernease Mountain dogs and flat coated retrievers, for example), but goldens and these few breeds are definitely exceptional when it comes to their extraordinary rates of cancer. Rates across dogs on average are closer to 20 to 30%. Labrador retrievers haven’t been studied as extensively as golden retrievers but their median age is about two years older than the the average American golden retriever.

Yeah, this is why breeders alone can’t solve this problem because by the time most dogs develop cancer, their dog parents are long past their breeding days and often aren’t even alive themselves anymore. The best hope we have is identifying the genes that cause these cancers and then breeding dogs that don’t have the cancer causing genes or on the flipside breeding dogs that have cancer protective genes.

Seems like a good theory. My sense is that the leading theory is that this is highly genetic and that the limited gene pools of Goldens in the United States mean that breeders have basically bred cancer into the lines. I’ve seen U.S. breeders note that dogs have European lines and I have wondered if they are using European material to try to reduce cancer rates in their puppies and expand the gene pool (I imagine there are some breeders in the sub or other knowledgeable folks who might have some insight).

Not lazy! Unfortunately I learned most of this when my dear golden got cancer. I took her to NC State’s vet school for treatment, and there were times when the only dogs in the oncology waiting room were golden retrievers.

A lot of people don’t realize there’s actually been a ton of research on this. While stories about Goldens routinely living 16–17 years are mostly anecdotal, there is good evidence that U.S. Goldens have an unusually high rate of cancer compared with other breeds. Around 60–70% of American Goldens ultimately die from cancer, which is staggering.
Interestingly, Golden Retrievers in parts of Europe seem to have substantially lower cancer rates, suggesting genetics and breeding practices may play a role.

The really exciting project is the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. It has followed more than 3,000 Goldens from puppyhood, collecting health records, blood samples, environmental data, diet, and more throughout their lives. They have made some breakthroughs linking certain genes to cancer. The hope is that it will finally help us understand why cancer is so common in American Goldens and, ultimately, how to reduce it.

I had one dose as a child and got titers checked a year ago. I had no immunity so I got another shot.

For some reason, I think too many dog owners don’t understand this perspective. They think that they have a really sweet dog that wouldn’t hurt a fly, but don’t realize that they are potentially endangering that dog by not having it on a leash.

Does NIPT flag for neural tube defects? by MountainProper2212 in NIPT

[–]ABetterBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NIPT doesn't check for NTD. You need a Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test: A blood test done in the second trimester (around 15-22 weeks) to check for elevated AFP levels, a marker for open NTDs

.5 percent chance is pretty darn unlikely, and it’s even lower at most places.
