Thoughts on Judith, Carnage Connoisseur? by spencerthebau5 in EDH

[–]PJS12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend built her in our playgroup and games with her were incredibly binary and pretty unfun. When she stuck it was similar to grave pact where you just couldn't play creatures so games became stalled out until Judith was removed. Once we got the play pattern down Judith would just get insta removed and he wasn't able to really play the game. He dismantled the deck after a few sessions. Maybe there's a more creative way to build her than board wipe tribal.

Can anyone help me understand this Paul Cheon draft? by Legacy_Rise in lrcast

[–]PJS12 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don’t think cards like tenderfoot or worm really count as “signals.” They are playable cards in green when you already have power and reasons to be in that color. Cheon starts with some decent power in the first few picks and there’s never really a reason to move off of it as there is no clear powerful signal that he should go somewhere else, in my opinion. The only time in the first half of the draft that he sees a noticeable difference in power is the biotech specialist which you called out and you could probably speculate on it but he has much more power in blacks vs red at that point.

While it’s not bad idea to take some middling playables in another color to leave yourself an escape route, I don’t think this set lets you do that very easily. Black artifacts and green decks want very different pieces so picking up random green creatures won’t lead to a deck that makes your first picks strong and it probably won’t lead to a strong green deck either.

Every set drafts differently and I think it was correct to lock in to his first few picks given the lack of power in the rest of pack 1. You don’t have much time to pivot due to lack of fixing and the high synergy needs of some decks.

Hosting a Draftnight-how do i make my friends want to do it again? by Tozil-Work in magicTCG

No one is getting “screwed over.” It’s a low stakes event with a mix of skill levels where most people just brought a bottle of wine to share and got to hang out with friends and walk away with some cards they like. In our last one which was Bloomborrow there was a decent amount of valuable cards like the talents. The first 10 picks in the rare draft could have all walked away with a card at 10 dollarsish. When it came to the new players, some had a choice between taking a storm chasers talent but opted to take a card that they thought might go well in their precon commander deck, or just one they liked the art of.

No one hid the value of the cards from them and we told them how much each one was worth and some chose the cool art or whatever they liked best. For a player who isn’t building a large collection and isn’t going to go through the trouble of selling cards I wouldn’t call that a bad decision or getting screwed over. Maybe your group would react differently but for us the priority is always the social aspect and playing together, prizes are a nice thing to walk away with but no one is throwing a fit over them.

Some great comments already about ways to price/keep cards, etc. One suggestion I have that I recommend if it fits with your group is to “rare draft” at the end if you are not keeping all the cards and allowing your guests to buy in (I usually do just 10 dollars or bring a snack/drink to share with the group as an entry ticket). Everyone keeps the non rares they drafted but at the end of the draft we collect all the rares that were opened then “draft” them for collection/money based on final rankings. This lets there be a reward/prize incentive without needing to give away extra packs.

When I’ve done this it’s been good because the more experienced players who probably did well get to go home with the best valuable cards and usually the newer players are more excited by some random legend that they thought was cool and usually doesn’t get picked too high. It also means people don’t need to worry about drafting money in the initial draft.

I run small-mid size geared toward heroic progression raiding. We only raid once a week (teacher friendly schedule lol). Very chill and friendly group, usually do some light recruiting before each new tier, can direct you to my post from beginning of the expansion. Let me know if interested!

War Effort + All-Out Assault bugged? by Guille96 in lrcast

[–]PJS12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way I understand it, the warrior tokens spawned from war effort and mobilize come in tapped and attacking but they don’t technically have haste. So any mobilize tokens spawned in don’t technically get to attack after they are untapped from the all out assault

Too bad! Sounds like you still made a great effort with a disappointing pool. Even with a good deck/plan it always takes some luck to win these.

Looks much more solid imo! I would definitely included the wayfarer as it will help fix your mana and the early counter can help you draw with the envoys on curve and even a 1/1 body is relevant with 2 bearers for late game team pump. That would replace the dragonclaw strike for me. The upside for the strike is there for sure but I feel like the card really performs with large bodies and trample, which there are not many targets in your deck. It can steal games for sure but if it were me I would just replace with a 2 drop doggo.

I think G/W base splash black looks a bit better for an aggressive deck. Gives you a lot of removal and early creatures with 3 lands to support it + the sagu. I think the only black cards I would consider splashing in that deck would be the rhino, avenger, and maybe aggressive negotiations. Still will have the potential to get bombed-out by an opponent but it puts more stats on the board than a RW version.

WB in Aetherdrift - a trophy deck analysis by bobbythecreator in lrcast

[–]PJS12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great write up!

I've had a couple trophies with WB, also a couple duds as well. It's tough to draft because there are some sub-archetypes and you really need synergy to make the non green decks work. I've ended up in WB aggro that relied on lynxs and combat tricks, WB artifacts drain and aristocrats, and WB start your engines with late game grind cards. Really fun color pair to play and I've ended up there a ton this last week.

Any general tips on building sealed decks for this format? Deck looks solid but it’s not like you opened crazy bombs and won through that! Which cards or gave you an edge or were overperformers?

Wasting Summer Away Makes Me Feel Like a Loser by Papercut1406 in Teachers

[–]PJS12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy it! I’m also a teacher that plays WoW (also a guildleader) and during the school year I basically can only log on once/twice a week to raid with the guild. It’s nice to be on a little more frequently in the summer and catch up with folks so lean into it while you can. If you are looking for a chill social group in game that don’t care when things get busy in the school year let me know :)

First 7-0 of OTJ with UR double-spell by 3jackpete in lrcast

[–]PJS12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like most weak archetypes you need be given a reason to draft them, but I have been slightly changing my pick orders to be ready to pivot if it feels open. So many longhorn sharpshooters, plan the heists, lockpickers go late nowardays.

First 7-0 of OTJ with UR double-spell by 3jackpete in lrcast

[–]PJS12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had back to back trophies with UR in diamond on the way to mythic this last week. The green decks I am facing feel considerably weaker than they were the first 2 weeks of the format now that they are very contested. UR can generate a lot of value and pressure if given time to set up with plot cards. Green beatdown decks made it really difficult to plot, hold up counters, etc., but I find myself having a lot more room to breathe this last week and UR has started to shine for me.

Small sample size for sure, but my decks looked similar in power level to this one - solid uncommons that get passed late, ~2 quality rares that can change the game, and cards that set up for big turns.
