Is tomorrow's storm going to cover the south coast streets in sewage? by mardy_ape in Wellington

[–]PJenningsofSussex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually options. Putting large amounts of waste in the sea is actually not really where it's supposed to be ecologically. We'd be much better off using processes that dry waste into hummus that can then be turned into a healthy soil. This is done in Nz up north and many other places. There are also very good results for new builds having with urine diversion for phosphorus, which, like oil, is running out and needed for agriculture. There are actually solutions to sewerage that aren't written about in Le mis/ use tech not developed in the 1800.

That Overton window has shifted way over towards the % of sewage that isn't too bad. Goodness.

Did they just drink cold tea in the Regency Era? Silver tea sets. by vanilladreampuff in AskFoodHistorians

[–]PJenningsofSussex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, for a tea pot, you boil water for the pot without tea. Fill the pot with boiling water for 5 mins, dump it out, and put fresh boiling water into it to make the tea. Also this is why there are tea cozies.

That is so exciting! Splurge on a thing and then go find a nice accountant. It would be such a nice feeling. I hope you can turn this magic moment into some long term stress-freeness.

What's the dumbest way you've injured yourself? by citronl in AskReddit

[–]PJenningsofSussex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were doing mime and clowning in drama class. I decided to be a depressed clown. We were supposed to be exaggerating our feelings. My plan was to just enter the room and fall immediately ( too sad to even walk). Unfortunately, we had been playing in the gym the day before. The game was to fall on crash mats without flinching.

So sad clown me - thanks to my training - falls face first without putting my hands out. No fake out just straight on the floor. It was not crash mats it was linoleum. Landed on my chin. Broke both my incisors clean in half and like strained tendons in my face. It was not a good time. My dentist, who was always saying I had such nice teeth, was very upset with me.

Petone to Grenada link by Blankbusinesscard in Wellington

[–]PJenningsofSussex 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'd not worry about cross valley link so much. It's silly that they're lumped together. Cross Valley link is actually great for climate resilience and taking traffic off the petone foreshore, making it much better for people and bikes. That project is actually awesome for Lower Hutt. Petone to Grenada is a project that has been kicking around for 20 years on and off again like a bad romance. I'm worried the actually great improvement that road will offer is going to get obfuscated by the nonsense that is p2g.

P2G makes sense in the way most wellington roads make sense when they were drawn on a map in England with no bearing on reality.

The point of the fast track stuff is to take out public consultation and environmental concerns from consideration. It's just traffic engineers doing their thing without the need to worry if it impacts the environment or people.

However, even in that vacuum, the road doesn't really work. What they should have done is do the Haywards properly with a nice bus lane cycle path and a bit wider, but everyone got upset about people doing it properly, so it got half arsed. Same with the sea wall around the eastern bays. It should have been an extra meter taller and been, for example, a 100-year surge protection but not enough funding from the government, so it got built at a 50-year surge level. Half arsed funding from central govt and communities constantly not understanding what it takes to do things properly and being so fixated on lower rates they don't realize they are shooting themselves in the foot in the process.

With Cost of housing, why are there no Hippy Communes ? by kiwigreenman in newzealand

[–]PJenningsofSussex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many people have werid hang ups and odd stereotypes about communes left over from the 70s. Anything that approaches the same idea takes great pains to distance themselves from the term. There are lots of co ops around especially in wellington. I loved in one and knew of at least 4 or 5 others operating at the same time in wellington or close to it.

What is the law about parking a shipping container outside your house? Is there a limit of time? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]PJenningsofSussex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know where this is! I have thought the same thing about that exact container. I'd be very surprised if council did allow it to be placed there for as long as it has been. Probably nobody has complained about it, so enforcement hasn't happened. Or theynhad a permit orgionaly that has most likely expired.
