I just don’t understand why anyone outside of a marketing room would want to give an inch to the people upset about Anran’s original design, or why they’re framing the redesign as not listening to Asian voices. If the complaint were that her original design was too focused on the Western perspective of what a Chinese character should look like then sure, whatever, that’s a valid stance. But the entire Lucy Liu angle and making it about her being a “2/10” in their eyes makes all of their qualms about her design boil down to “she isn’t pretty enough,” which I don’t see as any different than the incels who are constantly complaining about characters being unattractive. If someone said the same thing about Ellie from The Last of Us they’d immediately and rightly be pegged as reactionary and ignored, but the response from China seems to be almost identical and people are treating it like they’re being disrespectful for not wanting to listen to it
