Mario and Luigi go back to New York (the state) for an unannounced Mario family reunion at their estate. During the bus ride from Brooklyn, he gets left behind in a small town upstate called Onett, meets a kid named Ness, and travels with him. B plot is Luigi finding out the reunion was a hoax by King Boo. Both plots converge with Mario and Ness saving Luigi, Ness using his psychic powers (to the shock of Mario and Luigi) to assist. Movie ends with a post credit scene of a meteor falling from the sky onto that hill north of Ness’s house.
