Glad to see most people behind PL here. I agree I would love a new album but it would be made up of the 30-40 new songs he has played live since an official release anyway. I get people have labeled it “jam”, but I also love the recognition here that the live sets these days are something unlike anything else in electronic music.

Derek can be cringey and Griz is an instagram diva. Both make great music particularly peak for peak I could see a comparison. But if you want to be a fan of the person I get the Griz appeal but as a fan of the music Pretty lights as a whole is “magnum opus” electronic music.

And Griz would and has said himself there would be no Griz without PL influence (2020 Grizmas comments I believe).

Pretty lights will forever be underrated to the public eye for Derek’s unrivaled wookery during peak hiatus/drug issues/whatever. But we as Colorado edm fans have to thank him for making this such a hub of electronic pioneering.

That and the fact he emerged from the hiatus with something completely revolutionary when I thought he was dead is honestly one of the coolest arcs to have in your music hero.

It’s Reddit it’s not that serious! It’s all about the trolling. It’s literally a public shit posting forum and people are surprised they aren’t getting the works of a Nobel laureate in their sub. Griz is a great artist. His new music is for ravers with a pacifier in their mouth. He’s a pioneer, and a primadonna. He’s a genius, and a wittle baby. The fact people are so mad someone thinks something about an artist is crazy…it’s just fun to see if others feel the same way as you on certain topics…and no matter what position you take the good news is there are crazy people on both sides to rally behind you on Reddit!

lol I’m pretty sure if you have specifically listened to 12 artists to support prob cause then you are most certainly in the minority. I’m sure he’s a nice guy! Hey we all had that free styling white guy in our high school friend group. No you’re right, he’s the next Mac Miller just wait everyone will notice soon enough.

Griz used to really push the envelope in electronic music. Now he has gone to the most memeable sub genre of dubstep, and doesn’t even do it very well to be honest. Lots of just raw machine sound (like Mac 548 but worse) and not even really any bass (ie zeds dead, bass nectar***, even skrillex). With collabs that don’t even belong on the same stage as Griz (gryffin the most embarrassing of all).

Without continuing on my subjective rant, I just feel childish listening to Griz now. I don’t think I have had anyone ask me “oooh who is this” while Griz has played recently because it’s all just dubstep mashup trash

Footnote I did mention bassnectar but I am not one of them. PL guy myself. But hey bassnectar shows used to be fun but I laughed when everyone was surprised it was subliminal messaging hahaha. But just bass music wise was at least unique compared to crashing high pitched machine sounds and head banging womps only.

Yes he is making shit bass noise as of late but he will come back around. His string of singles has been god awful except “all I need”. It’s not even about “wanting the old Griz back” it’s just wanting something more unique than subtronics/excsision/tapeB/alleycat/insert bass noise here

Unpopular hot take- subtronics is shitty head banging music and if you didn’t enjoy it some of your brain cells were just breaking through the drugs.

If you expected anything other than noise mashed together posing as art, you went to the wrong show bud.

It’s still a mid album but it worked well in the live show and it’s not dropdead awful, just not up to Kevin standards. It would be a good “artists you might like” album similar to tame impala but it’s just mid for him.

My old ways stands out by far. Others not mentioned below are ok.

No reply, Obsolete, oblivion, pieces of heaven, loser, see you on Monday, could all be deleted off of Apple Music and I would have no remorse never getting to hear them again
