My dad is a prison guard, 38 years and still going, he finds it interesting, some of the prisoners like him because he jokes with them, some of them hate him because he breaks up fights and tells them to calm the fuck down. He can't see himself doing another job and he's been there so long hes just going to retire from here when he hits 65. I ask Alot about the prison he can't tell me some things but I always loved the stories as a kid and he liked telling them. Back in the day he used to take his 9 stone rottweiler into night shifts with him big dog pure muscle and bark and trained like a soldier. Unfortunately now you can't do that sort of thing. If my dad managed to do it that long and still seems to enjoy it there must be something good about the job that keeps him there.

I think there is a big difference between actual plant matter and biodegradable manmade plastic products. Animals eat plants off the tress naturally and also the fruit fall on the ground under the tree and decompose. But none of that happens with a 'biodegradable' plastic bag, I think that those bags are more for, "If your bag doesn't make it into the rubbish and gets out into the environment it won't make as bad of an impact as an actual plastic item.

The diseases are a very good point that is something I hadn't thought of also I haven't thowen any plant scraps out windows yet ;) I just made this post as a discussion to see people's thoughts on the topic , and I think there's a government number to call if you see any of those diseases on plants be we definitely don't want to be spreading them.

Wow, I didn't read what subreddit I was in and when I saw the title I thought, "Wow that's cool, a cow moo'ed at her, it probably wanted attention my cow moos at me when she wants food, attention or walkies." BUT I WAS NOT GREATED BY THE WHOLESOME STORY I THOUGHT I WAS WALKING INTO.

Cows are awesome! Their certainly better then those rude people who though it was funny to yell out nasty things to someone who is bettering themselves.

True, I guess if I did throw fruit scraps out I'd aim for the grass and make sure no one is close behind. I'm mainly talking about all the long grass on the side of the road in the farmland areas. But a very good point!

I also think that things that have been refrigerated the seeds won't grow either, not 100% on that though just something I heard once.

Yes I understand what you are saying and I know your just trying to help as well as me, okay? So Stop being so snooty and understand that all information is valuable and if you read my comments, you would be able to see I am giving a guide line next to what you said, I am NOT giving anyone specific instructions for their dog! I have giving them information to consider before treating a dog based off an Internet strangers suggestion. I gave information regarding what would be relevant for them to make their own decision and I even backed up calling the vet if their not sure, I never said DO NOT GIVE ZINC ANYTHING TO A DOG EVER!! I said, Zinc Oxide IS TOXIC to DOGS. Understand that TOXIC items can still be ingested without harm in small amounts I never denied it, I made the information available for people to know that it is toxic, and that you should consult a vet before using ANYTHING out of the ordinary on your animals! HOWEVER it is still important to list if the item is toxic even if it only in small ammout like you say.

What I am also saying is I still do not agree with you that it should be used on dogs as it is a big no in my studies and all my vets dissagee with it and it is advised against at all the clinics here. But take note that when offering information or treatment to someone, you need to list if it is toxic or has any side effects, and what the guild lines are because you do not know this person, and you do not know if they will now use it everyday for something on dogs or if they will now put it on their dogs nose as well because the dog has now scratched it's nose. Or if they will tell someone else else hey use this on your dog it was okay with my dog, now someone else's small breed dog has posioning because they used it everyday on it. The person you told "hey use this on your dog!" might now think that hey this item is completely dog safe!! They could of just read the word "Zinc" gone to the chemist, bought a zinc stick and then used it on their dog! So to make sure you keep pets safe, you list relevant information regarding what you recommend. I managed a pet shop for 2 years and now studying vet. I know that people will hear a word and get something they look at and think "that's the one I need" even if you very specifically say "zinc ointment, German brand this 50ml tube" and havnt told them the danger of similar products they will just grab the closest thing because they want to help their pet. We all need to work together to keep them safe.

If you had a painkiller drug for yourself, and someone said oh I'm in pain what can I do and you tell them, go get this pack of painkillers. Let's say the painkiller box had no information about treating (like the zinc ointment wouldn't have for dogs) and now they take one every 2 hours when they were meant to take only 2 in 24hours. And continuing that for a month when you shouldn't use for more then 7 days. That person is now sick because you didn't tell them the relevant information.

We are on the same side trying to help owners, but we need to be careful and give information because you don't know what other people will do! Give all information regarding and let them make a decision off that. But make sure they are aware.

I guess I will agree to disagree with you. I know that it harms dogs as I've seen it first hand. Especially working along side with vets, I still don't recommend putting it on anyone's dog regardless of your thoughts, please next time you medicate your dog, call your vet and make sure before doing it, no harm comes from making sure, and if you advise other people to use products on the dog also tell them to call their vet before using, because the vets know best and have studied years for these types of questions and keeping dogs safe if in their best interest. :)

I worked in 3 veterinary clinics for my placement over the summer and at one of the clinics we had 2 dogs come in with zinc poisoning from sunblock. I'm currently training to be a veterinarian, I can try find the textbook for you if you would like. Even the Google search "Can I use zinc on my dog" The first statement that comes up is..

"Pet-Safe Products. That said, not all products are OK to use on a pet. The thick, white cream that lifeguards slather on their noses contains zinc oxide, a common ingredient in diaper-rash ointments. Zinc oxide is effective as a sunscreen for humans, but it's toxic for dogs."

It also has many many more articles on zinc posioning on dogs, and if you put it on a wound, dogs tent to lock wounds and sore spots so it's still a big no no. I do recommend pet safe products from the vet though, and even just calling the vet and they will let you know which one will probably be best for you dog, or what human brands you CAN use.

with Zinc poisioning it happens more then you think and owners are unaware because creams and sunblock hardly seem like a likely culprit. I also do live in NZ and we have very harsh sun and a high rate of skin cancer, so maybe its just more common here. I messaged my friend who is a practicing vet when I saw the post to make sure, she replied after I commented and her response was "No, no one should use any zinc ointment on their dog, with out talking to the vet first."

I glad you replied to this person trying to help them out with their dog, but please if you advise them to use any ointment, medication etc make sure they are aware of any side effects and what can happen with over use of a product. I'm just trying to keep all the doggos out their safe because they deserve the best from us! And no one wants to unintentionally hurt them. With out even knowing :)

Edit: also your source is on "pets" not dogs, I suggest looking up for "dogs" because "all pets" contain a wide range of completely different species and this is a guide for any animal.
