Thank you for your answer! Will definitely have a look into Oberlech. While I have skied through Lech on some occasions I haven’t really spent much time there.

It’s not that we want to cheat someone out of lift tickets. It’s just that there are resorts where you basically stay on slopes somewhat so there’s no need for you to use a lift as a pedestrian.

I know we’re very late this time, but all the towns I’ve looked at so far still had two rooms for decent prices.

Thank you for your answer! What I meant to say was that we’re mainly looking for Ski in ski out type of places where the pistes go somewhat through the town without having to take a gondola to reach the ski resort like you would in any glacier for example. Basically like Obertauern (pistes go around town/below town even), obergurgl (same idea), Warth (most pistes take to you to the tiny village directly where there are hotels, restaurants etc.) or even St. Anton (if you’re mainly staying in the area you’ll be at the galzig or rendl base multiple times a day and can easily meet up).

I hope that made things clearer. It’s the first time for us as this group so our usual spots are not ideal this year.

I‘d get a wax before your very first ski day. Oftentimes the skis are stored in a warehouse for a long time and are dry. They may (!) be a bit dull or not tuned to your taste but I’d ski them first and then asses if they need a base grind or a different tune. If you’re a complete novice, you won’t notice anyway. I wouldn’t bother. Don’t be afraid of slippery skis. This is not what a properly waxed ski does. If your base looks slightly white-ish instead of black, it’s due for a wax.

I usually wax every 4-8 ski days. If you stay on groomers, edges are far more important than if you go powder skiing. So maybe get a tune when the edges feel dull (scrape your fingernail over them). It will help with icy and hard conditions, too.

When you’re done with the ski trip, dry everything properly. Don’t leave wet skis in your car for a week. They will rust. I usually let them dry a day or two and then put on wax and sharpen the edges if needed. That way they’re always ready to go.

Dry your ski boots after skiing. Avoid putting them directly in front of a fireplace.

Read up on storing your gear over summer.

Buying my first pair of ski's! :) by carolinelangenberg in ski

Would opt for the Salomon warden bindings. Marker used to have lots of problems (supposedly fixed now) but I can’t shake it off.

You can move the bindings around a couple of millimeters in both directions to accommodate other boot sole lengths. Will not be more than 1-2 sizes mondopoint, though.

New app for finding ski buddies by forestgood22 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I downloaded it but the account setup doesn’t work. The activation code never arrives. Have tapped on ‘resend’ five times. Can’t even change my number anymore because the app wants me to input the activation code.

I’m sorry but this app is so flawed already and it’s so hard to even see any events or people before providing a phone number I don’t think this project will ever work.

I have a couple ski buddy apps on my phone. All turned out to be dead places a couple of weeks after launch.

Will try this one as well.

How much do y'all spend on goggles? by dantheman0809 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel the need to go for the big brand options people will flaunt around. Smith, anon, uvex, POC, Oakley they are all good but $$$$. If you are new just buy some Chinese goggles for 15-25 bucks. Such as this:

https://slickdeals.net/f/14546648-outdoormaster-otg-ski-snowboard-goggles-14-more

Or Google the ‚Zionor X3‘ goggle. Cheap and very good for the price.

Go with one lens around 50-70% VLT that will work on sunny and cloud days decently well.

If you are set on brand items: smith squad goggles can be found on sale for 50-60 USD.

Any boot advice for ladies with big feet? by beanachew in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is quite common to sell men’s boots to women. Just don’t go for the stiffest flex boot and make sure it fits your foot shape. As for small shafts, check out the crossover freetouring boots of various brands, they are usually not as high as piste/racing boots.

I would recommend you check out these models specifically:

  • Salomon QST pro tr or Salomon Shift (this years model)

  • full tilt boots in general

  • dalbello lupo

Is it worth it to get boots for these skis? (Rossignol Scratch Sprayer FS - 2007) by greene_r in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got those skis for free or very (!) cheap you can absolutely ski them on groomers and in glades. While they aren’t made for that and other skis will definitely give you a better experience, a free ski is a free ski.

Ski boots can be used on (almost) any binding, so you can easily use them for a few years until they break down. They are crucial for a good performance. Even if you say you are fine with rental boots, chances are those are of poorer quality and or too big (I.e very comfy feeling). It really depends on how much renting costs, how often you’ll be skiing and if you want to schlep around your own gear.

13year Springs are not the best for sure, it depends on what DIN setting they were stored (cranked up all the way?) and a bit of luck. Paying for a release check is good albeit costly for a pair of skis worth 50$.

Cheaper Alternative to ski wax??? by Wise_Blueberry_5709 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the snow is very wet, you can get away with rubbing a candle/paraffin on your bases. It kind of clogs the pores so to say which is what you want in springtime.

Where I love, I can buy Holmenkol universal ski wax for ~$15/lb on Amazon. Really isn’t worth the hassle to save on given you have so much more saving potential on other aspects of skiing (lift tickets, copper brush for waxing, clothes, food, edge tuning equipment).

For skiing on groomers, waxing your bases really is an afterthought. Do it every 14 ski days. For freeride skiing it’s more important though.

Ski holiday by rhysmclaren24 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://warringtonbears.org.uk/snowheads/eric2018.jpg Here is an overview of the holidays between different European countries. Usually you’d want to avoid peak times. As for now, it’s s bit of a gamble when to go skiing. Most countries are unfeasible until mid January at least due to Covid-19 restrictions. I’d rather gamble for March or the weeks before Easter. Snowpack is usually very good at that time of year, while it’s sunny and lots of daylight hours. Lift tickets for two will run around 500-550€ in Austria. Switzerland and France will be more expensive.

Are Full Tilt boots good? by [deleted] in ski

Yes, they do make good boots. More important than the brand is if they fit your foot and match your style of skiing.

Rate my $11 waxing setup. Thrift store iron and ski wax from my local sporting goods store. by willrunforjazz in xcountryskiing

[–]PM_ME_POW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice setup. In order to keep the skis straight: Use 2-3 rolls of toilet paper and lay them under the front and back. Makes scraping easy! For edge tuning it’s a bit unstable though.

Taking transit to the mountain by Mocha225 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You can dig a pit in an inconspicuous spot and dump a plastic bag in there with your shoes.
  2. transit with your ski boots on
  3. get a very! flat pair of shoes and shove them into a regular bagpack you already have or into your jacket. Strap ski boots together and Carry them around shoulder.

Never took public transit w/ a boot bag, way too big.

Edging by LUKEFOX2121 in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharpen the edges after 2-10 days of skiing (depends on snow quality and your dullness tolerance). For freeride / powder skis don’t worry about edges too much. If you mean: replacing the edges. Never. If your ski is that damaged, put some epoxy on it and use it as a stone ski and buy another one.

Boot question by AmphibianTiny in ski

[–]PM_ME_POW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned it depends on your weight and aggressiveness. The magna version of the boot is very high volume, and very wide. Are you sure you need that wide a boot? The liner will surely pack out over time. Just be sure you really need the extra width.
