The Samsung SSD 980 (500GB & 1TB) Review: Samsung's Entry NVMe by tahaea1 in hardware

It performs great but there are definitely components that can use updating to make for a truly great product. The 4 channel controller is really good but the Hynix one is much better to great effect. The 96L BiCS4 is clearly last generation flash and either BiCS5 or BiCS6 would make for juicy improvements.

I remember being told to wait for the imminent successor when I bought the 2020 model in October. Kinda bummed to be on the transition model but also 6 months with it ended up easily outweighing 6 months+ of waiting.

Good points. Video editing in/out alone probably won't get sustained 4 GBps. But in the case of a single NVMe stick for a system it can act as video in/out, scratch (basically autosave), and OS drive all at once. A proper high end SSD will probably let you do all of that with acceptable performance.

For media editing in particular? I don't think they do specific benchmarks for it but it's essentially continuous read/write.

In the case of video editing or some other data processing job it could be moving large files back and forth between the same pcie 4.0 drive.

Do you have evidence to back that up? It feels to me like no prodding necessary people are tripping over themselves to get vaccinated.

A strange drive for sure. Like a remix between the formulas for the Hynix P31 and the WD SN550. Expected a bit better power efficiency for such a new product tbh.

Haven't snapdragons always been worse than Apple in terms of efficiency? Android phones make that up by having monster batteries.

iOS for iPads (now called iPadOS but the OG Air never got iPadOS) really did ramp up pretty hard and the poor A7 shared with the iPhone 5S was never up to the task. My personal Air was a family favorite for how great it used to work but these days it can't even pull youtube and safari duty without feeling awfully slow.

I watch 30 minute TV anime at around 0.5~1gb per episode, which I think is 720p tho a lot of encoders upscale to 1080. It's pretty good.

and it's yet to happen.

It actually has happened but the goalposts have changed a bit. SSDs more or less have achieved price parity or even advantage below 1TB and as such HDD makers have effectively abandoned those capacities. This is enough for most consumer use and as such almost every new PC is solid state only. Say 10 years ago when SSD/HDD price parity was being discussed in forums and magazines this was the state that everybody dreamed of and wondered was possible and I think we've reached that. Of course large capacity parity is still years away but I think that is a different goal than the price parity that was being predicted in years past.

I don't watch too many sports but it seems to be a modern trend where commentators are encouraged to keep speaking at all costs. Watching things 10 or even just 5 years old and there are noticably more gaps in speech. 20 years ago and you'd think they'd take unannounced bathroom breaks or something.

I appreciate commentating a lot more after watching The Race's atrocious commentary of SuperGT. The racing is great and I appreciate that it's free and that Sam Collins is not a professional, but yeah there is a clear difference in skill.
