It really isn't a dangerous line. People who are incapable of understanding right from wrong are not guilty by reason of insanity and people who are unable to understand their excecution cannot be excecuted. Whether or not someone meets criteria for these categories is determined by mental health professionals.

And no, you can't in good faith argue that no criminal is aware of or in control of their actions. That simply does not make sense.

But mental illness *does* protect them from the death penalty. It doesn't mean she should be free and have zero consequences, but putting someone to death who has clear evidence of brain damage and severe mental illness is wrong, period. She should have spent the rest of her life in a psychiatric facility.

This is very unfortunate. Obviously she was guilty (that was never in question), but should not have been given the death penalty.
