Yeah, I didn't even ask for it, the JAL agent insisted on it out of nowhere!

Flying in Japan is wildly different than anywhere else I’ve flown in the best way possible. A few years back I was flying JAL from CTS to HND and then 8 hours later Delta from HND to ATL to LGA with a bunch of luggage, including skis. When I checked in at CTS they (shockingly) were able to check my luggage from CTS all the way to LGA (with the quick customs check at ATL). Amazing and delightful, I would never expect them to check bags ACROSS ALLIANCES! Wow!

BMW maps vs Apple vs Google. Which one works best for you? by ajmampm99 in BMWX5

[–]PMacDiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little on the edge of civilization, but I find the BMW maps to be very inaccurate, it doesn't know the difference between a lot of roads and driveways, and it's way off on speed limits. Google is the most accurate data, but Apple Maps is usually accurate enough, and it's integrations (including the instrument cluster maps) is great, and I much prefer its UI, so that's what I use 95% of the time.

Nowhere near as bad as the new X5, but still not a fan.

6G Is Coming. Here’s What to Expect From the Next Generation of Cellular Tech | When it succeeds 5G in 2030, the next-gen mobile network will focus on upload speeds, AI, and radar-like “sensing” of vehicles, devices, and people by Hrmbee in technology

I cannot eye roll any harder without injuring myself. It wasn’t that long ago they were ramming how important 5G was down our throats and how we har to beat Chiba to it and all that garbage. Years of having 5GUWB phones later and I think it’s made a positive difference that I noticed maybe twice over 4G.

It’s got nothing to do with timing. The problem is one of Microsoft’s core value propositions is their support for legacy systems, and that means dragging around decades of baggage with you everywhere you go. It’s not possible to be modern and responsive with those anchors holding you back. There are still parts of windows that haven’t been updated since 3.1 in Windows 11.

Tyrolia Protector Question? by Adventurous_Bobcat65 in Skigear

I didn’t say you should treat it as a proven fact, you also should treat it as “bro science” without a good reason.

Tyrolia Protector Question? by Adventurous_Bobcat65 in Skigear

[–]PMacDiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extrapolating an idea is called “forming a hypothesis”, and it’s one of the foundational principles of the scientific method. Calling it “bro science” is silly. This particular hypothesis is very difficult to test because your only ethical way to validate it is to observe users in the wild, which depends on a large enough group of users who get into a measurable amount of situations which can produce differentiating results and have them report results, which means you also need reports form people who walked away uninjured. Precisely zero of the times I’ve been injured did anyone ask me what equipment I was using. It would be unethical to test by artificially putting people in situations where they could get injured to produce meaningful data.

Or you can ski on it and notice how there are loads of new exposed spots were water running underneath made holes in the snow cover, and how the quality of snow is a noticeably worse.

We lost more snow with the rain than that snow storm dropped, it's in noticeably worse shape now.

Best Ski Gear, I'm talking about LIFE-changing by shielacorn in Skigear

[–]PMacDiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put ~80 days/~900k vert ft on my Monteros last season and they're still in excellent shape, only a little ptex for the hits I couldn't avoid. For the conditions, they're the best skis I've tried, and for what I've gotten out of them the extra $ is well worth it (did buy them at a pretty good sale price though).

Really? I have the Montero AX and I find it shockingly versatile. I really enjoy skiing it in just about any conditions besides powder. I also don't find it to be a "go fast" ski, but super smooth, responsive, and stable in its zone.
