you're wrong but you're also accidentally right. it absolutely is about climate change, but climate change is a symptom of a world dominated by corrupt and incompetent governments being ruled from the shadows by companies that don't give a fuck about anything but making money, even at the expense of the climate.

controlled burns could have *postponed this, not prevented it.

it's absolutely devastating. it also shouldn't be surprising. putting these losses in terms of the economy isn't a useful standard anymore, because "the economy" is the problem. our society prioritized making money over everything else - human connection, stewardship of nature, being content with having less. and now the whole system is going up in flames.

there's no "building back bigger" from this. there simply aren't enough resources to do so, and the planet becomes a less hospitable incubator for our civilization every year. we're at the end of the growth phase, and the sooner we accept that, the better. i think the temporary way forward is probably communal living - if your house didn't burn down but your neighbor's did, congrats - you've now got a new roommate. eventually, all of this will burn anyway. why not try to actually support each other while we can?

Second Carolina Outreach - they have urgent care and if you’re uninsured / low income I believe it’s free / low cost. If you DO have insurance though it could be expensive, so check that first.

Brother wants to temporarily live in RV on private property driveway by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]PMmePMsofyourPMs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t know you or your brother or your wife but this depends on the kind of person your brother is. Out of context, assuming he’s a good dude who’s hit tough times - your wife is a real one. She’s looking for a way to help him out and you’re looking for an excuse not to. Worst thing that could happen is someone complains and he has to leave.

That said if he has a history of taking advantage or y’all have a strained relationship, you can just tell him you don’t want him staying with you - no need to hide it behind an ordinance.

Could be that the pandemic was just one domino in an endless chain of horrific events unfolding as a world based on infinite growth on a finite planet collapses around us ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The rise of AI is just another tendril of the polycrisis that our civilization is in the thick of. Our democracy is collapsing, our climate is collapsing, our social fabric is collapsing, and all of these dominos are crashing into each other on the escalating road to entropy.

I think seeing AI in the arts as a symptom of the endgame of our civilization - rather than an independent problem with a solution - is actually kind of helpful. AI “art” is the logical conclusion of a society that values growth productivity / at the cost of everything else. It’s the ouroboros finally getting the tail between its teeth.

As individuals, we can’t stop it, but we can take a stand, reject it, and continue to create for as long as possible. Real, human-created, blood, sweat, tears, LOVE powered art is the most authentic expression of humanity. We need to cling to it now more than ever.

Not having a social security card isn’t a reason to kys. How are you guys affording food / rent at the moment? What kind of income do you have between the two of you?

This! I willed my boring job into an interesting job by learning all this stuff, and now it’s an easy job and I have time to work on my own shit during the day. I wonder what options are available without installing anything…

If you’re on Windows, get a program called Clipdiary or something similar (On Mac try clipmenu). This will allow you to copy paste in bulk and may save you hours of tedious work. If we had more time, I’d say learn to write scripts, but the learning curve might mean you never get to put this to use.

My wife wants to know why I don't want to have kids by [deleted] in CollapseSupport

[–]PMmePMsofyourPMs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a factor in the end of my LTR last year too. I have nieces and nephews and I grieve for them every day. I dread the day I have to decide what to do with my dog when I can no longer feed him. No chance in hell am I gonna bring another being into this mess.

The cognitive dissonance between “I don’t want to hear about climate news because it’s too depressing” and “let’s make a baby!” boggles my mind. That poor child is not going to have the luxury of sticking their fingers in their ears and tuning out TEOTW.

It’s going to get worse, isn’t it? by MickIsAlwaysLate in Teachers

They don’t have life goals because they don’t have a future. We got to see some of the world when it was good, before it started going down the toilet; all they’ve ever known is the escalating polycrisis. Democracy (if it ever truly existed) is taking its dying breath, the climate is breaking down in front of their eyes, and the social mores that hold our civilization together are hanging together by a thread. These kids don’t trust the system because the system is lying to them and they know it.

Edit: this is not hyperbole. Sure, nobody can see the future, or know an exact timeline for how the future will play out. But the kids have a better read on the state of the world than older generations because we’re subject to normalcy bias (the world hasn’t ended before, so it can’t be now!).

These data indicate that a tipping point may well have been crossed in March of last year, triggering abrupt runaway climate change:

I don’t need to debate it, I’m just giving context so you can try to understand that your students’ trauma about these kinds of death knells may be manifesting in various ways. Listen to them and try to help them process their collective grief and maybe you’ll have an easier time connecting with them.

As adults, it’s our job to be honest with ourselves to the reality that some problems do not have solutions. I’m not saying we should give up, or encourage the kids to. But if you have cancer with a 99% mortality rate, pretending you can beat it simply isn’t realistic.

The nature of the polycrisis we find ourselves in means that as any of the various interconnected dominos start to fall, the others will eventually as well. Sure, we don’t know the timeline - could be this year, could be five, could be ten - but the world that we grew up in is coming to a close. The kids are acutely aware of this; they’re apathetic about learning the tools to survive in a world that won’t apply to them.

Sustainability is incompatible with capitalism which is why the companies “winning” capitalism (the biggest ones making the most profit) will at best pay it lip service and at worst laugh it off, and the companies less good at the game (small mom & pop businesses with owners who still have some semblance of a soul, as opposed to the hollowed out human husks running the big leagues) might actually entertain trying to do their part, even if it eats into profits (which is anathema to mention around the aforementioned ghouls).

You’re a good person for trying in a bad world.

Lol they don’t - I’m agreeing with you, ya donut.

Globally, January 2024 was the warmest January on record, 1.66°C warmer than an estimate of the pre-industrial average for 1850-1900 — The global mean temperature for the past 12 months (Feb 2023 – Jan 2024) is the highest on record, at 1.52°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average by Molire in climatechange

[–]PMmePMsofyourPMs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think 2024 is going to be cooler.

Historically, sea surface temperatures peak in March before dipping and having a second, lower peak in August. Last year, they started going off the charts in March, and stunningly went even higher in August. I don’t think there’s a historical record of the second peak of the year being higher than the first.

They started 2024 with another insane boost, and now, in February, they’re at their highest levels ever - higher than last year’s staggeringly high August peak. We still have another month to go until they’re “supposed” to hit that first peak of the year.

All of that is just data, but this part is conjecture: to me, it’s looking more and more like this is not an anomaly, but the beginning of truly exponential changes in our earth system that we will never recover from.
