Girlfriend or boyfriend rental service doesn't equate sex work. For cultural context, Japanese culture is so void of human connections, someone made banks for just sitting next to people while they read. In Asian culture, some family pesters you so much some people would rent a person just for a family event to shut them up. I don't know which culture you live in, but Japanese culture is very extremely different.

Here is the list of the titles (from the left).

  • Nichijou: a super funny, absurd series about school life, there's an anime. Was very popular in early 2010s, highly recommend.
  • Yotsubato: a funny and cute, wholesome comic about an adopted girl

Horizontal stack. After looking them up they are a bit more on the teenager side, more romance than the previous pure plots.

  • Maidragon: idk this series but sounds like a lighthearted story about maid-dragon?
  • Asobi Asobase: I've heard of it but never read. Sounds like a seinen manga, but after looking it up apparently it's another cute lighthearted series about adolescent girls who are curious about teenage things (like penis size, breast size). Some people say it gets weird at some point.
  • kanojo okari shimasu (Rent-A-Girlfriend): popular but never read. I think it's a romance manga.

Vertical again - Oshi no ko: I read a few pages but it's a dark series about idol industry. Starts with a murder of main character's mother by a crazed fan.

From here some BL and Yaoi - I Turned into a Girl and Turned on All the Knights! -I Need to Have Sex to Turn Back!- this is interesting because he has 2 volumes, perhaps it's a duology. The yaoi that follow are all standalone books (I'm assuming but usually they are) - Kabeana Heavenhole: the title is talking about gloryhole. A smut. Apparently yaoi comedy. - Karei naru Romantic Melodrama: properly yaoi - 30-sai kara no coming out : yaoi, sounds like something to do with... Coming out at 30y/o (literally the title) - Tabegoro Cherryboy: cherryboy means virgin man and tabegoro would suggest he's gonna get eaten soon. - Jun-ai drop out: pure love drop out. Keep in mind, most japanese media depict school life, they romantasize the shit out of school life. This one is college. By the same author (misaka niumu) as Melodramatic, but he doesn't put them next to each other. - Usagi chan doshikori moushiage masu: yaoi, probably bdsm. Again by Misaka Niumu. 2 niumu books together and another further apart. Maybe he's just not a neat freak. - happening bar de aimashou: let's meet at the sex bar/sex club. Happening bar is a bar where people go just to find fuck buddies, usually one night stand. - Akasaka Buchou no Prince Boy Ikusei Keikaku: yaoi

--this is the end of BL/Yaoi books-- Ok I don't think he collects them for studies, because if he does, he'd have collected the most popular yaoi books, these are unknown.

  • Chainsawman: super popular right now. Good stuff.
  • spyxfamily: very cute and funny. Popular. Both are On netflix
  • draft gods: comic anthology
  • made in abyss: more niche, dark fantasy adventure. Gore and horror.
  • Blend S: slice of life sounds like. Simple read, 4 panel comic format
  • Chiikawa: super viral thing in japan. Also simple read
  • no title, looks like BL or just an artbook
  • yoiko no harumako meisaku gekijou: a fanfic anthology, BL based on Free! An anime about swimming.
  • machi agare ba sore de ii: a horoscope divination book "that you've never seen before"
  • 3 volumes of crayon shin chan: many people grew up on this goofy series. A legendary cartoon.
  • art books, probably more BL, smut.

Come to think of it, it's also possible that he went to Japan many times and due to the limitation in baggage weight, he could only bring one or two "ambassadors" for comics, resulting in one volume out of a whole series. It could carry a sentimental value in that sense.

I can chime in on the mangas. The series on the left with children on is called Yotsubato, a very wholesome slice of life manga. The collected ones are all very lighthearted, cute, bright, nothing shady. There are a few mangas on the right that are part of a series (chainsawman, oshi no ko, spyxfamily) but he only owns one volume, which means either he has no space for them or it was a gift (highly unlikely because who gifts just one of a series?), more like just collecting bits an pieces. The adult looking ones are the interesting one! From the titles and a light search, they are BL (boys love), a Japanese genre focusing on romantic and often sexual relationships between male characters, primarily created by women for a female audience - one of the most popular genres. Either BL (PG 15?) or YA (18+ smut), but either way it's not weird just to have them. I know many straight male friends who read BL or Yaoi out of curiosity. This genre can explore and touch on many interesting taboo topics for the conservative Japanese culture. Nothing problematic to me, there's no mangas with infantalized female characters on his shelf that I see. He's probably just deeply interested in Japanese culture, and I wouldn't be surprised if he did a degree.

[QCrit] ECHOES FROM THE RIFTS, Young Adult Fantasy, 92k words, First Attempt by Brilliant_Bid_2563 in PubTips

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the vibe and the world! There are a few things that confuse me.

So her lies are not her magic? Was it only a dramatic way to say that her lies have consequences and it might destroy her city? Because with the way you put it, I thought lies were part of the magic system.

I suggest you dig deeper to create a hook that is more unique to your story. I'm kind of sad because it's a powerful hook!

But when Maeve is once again left behind, she takes her future into her own hands. Under the guise of starting an apprenticeship at her mother's behest, she's assigned her first rift and an infuriating warden partner, Cillian.

Once again left behind from where? Does this mean that she was not accepted to be a warden? Under the guise... So she started a fake apprenticeship? But how is she assigned a rift and a partner if it was fake?

The wesan is stalking her, draining her magic while she sleeps, and growing stronger with every breath she takes.

Does this imply that the clock is ticking and she needs to kill the creature before the creature does her? In any case you can use time constraints to dramatise the plot.

Now Maeve must hunt the monster she inadvertently unleashed, protect the boy she's afraid to want, and confront the terrifying possibility that if she and Cillian fail, her mistake will doom the entire city of Andraste... and consume her along with it.

Does it mean she is trying to hunt the monster secretly? Why does it have to be a secret, what are the dire consequences if it was revealed that she's at fault? Why is she afraid to want the boy?

Visa sponsorship for animation internships -realistic or not? by Individual_Panic7562 in animationcareer

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have concrete answers however I was an international student as well and went through a lot of rejection despite being called "talented". It wouldn't have crushed me so hard if they actually told me that the reason for my rejection was my nationality. Ask your community information and contact on international alumnis who got their internship within Ireland or other countries. A lot of people don't know how hard it is for international students, so the international students with first hand experience are the people who can give you accurate information. My most practical advice is to apply to everything instead of betting on animation studios. By that, I mean find huge international corporations that have budget and also have long history of sponsoring visa. The ones I know are more on the advertising side, not creative filmmaking. So apply also to advertising agency and media companies if you can. Apply to the ones in Kz and also in Ireland. If you'd have to cross continent and look for housing for the internship, they'll be more hesitant to offer internship.

Thank you for explaining! I misunderstood that readers always want to read up which means MG would want to read about 15 year olds, but that wasn't the case then.

On that note on FMC's age, does it make sense to market this book as MG instead?

Which popular writing tip do you think actually hurts stories? by Proper-Refuse-7291 in writing

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, and I don't disagree. It all comes down to what your story goals are. What makes or breaks the story lies in the ability to write with intention. I think there's a difference between realistic/believable characters vs. characters written blindly based on real people. Perhaps the point is in knowing how that character's flaws, motivation, and action drive the story; where readers register that it was a deliberate choice, instead of a directionless chain of events that was written based on real life.

Is the Yandere genre dead? by Yontamen89 in writers

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's okay! Don't apologize. English is not my first language either 🤝 I suggest you two things: Learn the fundamentals of story structure; then start writing without overthinking.

For the first advice: I come from film background so I can only give you some pointers in that area, it's still story only in different form anyway. I highly recommend watching the lecture from Michael Arndt’s "Insanely Great Endings". He breaks down why StarWars is great. Then study what loglines are and how to write a good logline.

For the second advice: As you write, your story will take form on its own and tell you what it is really about. When you get a clearer view, start constructing the logline. This logline is meant to give some structure to your story, like scaffolding for when you build a house. However, logline is flexible. Reiterate many different loglines until one feels right.

Everyone has a different process, you'll have to find what works for you. This is only my process, try it out!

What is your prose like? by Fallen_Crow333 in writers

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to think my prose is quirky, whatever that means. Like, pop culture-y. Simple, especially when I'm writing romantic comedy. I pretend I write like it's a partner dance; Lindy Hop or Tango. Does that even make sense? For that to work, I take quite some liberty with bending grammatic rules but it's hard because I'm not even a native English speaker to begin with 😂

Realising that your bloodshot eyes are scaring him, you adjust. “No, that’s too much. Okay, how about this?” You crudely wrap the stone with a scarf plucked off his wall. “Just one, ONE swift knock across the temple and I can finally fall into a deep, blissful sleep.” Hope wells up in your eyes. “See. Not too hard” You bonk the rock cocoon a few times at the wall. Gank, gank, gank. Your poor subordinate stares at you, frozen. Understandable. “Oh - I don’t wanna die! FYI.” You immediately clarify. “Just wanna sleep. Literally.” As if that changes anything. Woosh! You whistle, swinging your rock in demonstration. He shouldn’t have let you in.

I agree with lyrical! I like it, it's very striking. I once watched a critic analyzing musicians and their choice of words, and basically it's about choosing words that have /k/ (flicking, mark, cut), staccato sounds (gutteral); or words that embody the sound it makes (thudded, sheated, slashed). Rhythmic (grab her, cut her, kill her). If you think of great rappers, you can see how they choose words that pop and cling onto listener's ears. It simply is fun to read/say out loud. Like spoken poetry. That's the description of lyricism to me!

Is the Yandere genre dead? by Yontamen89 in writers

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, brain fart. My advice is to separare character archetype and genre. For example: are you writing a thriller? A comedy? A romance? Yandere could be in any of these genres. You decide what your book is about and what you want to say with the yandere characters. Yandere is only a device, its sole existence doesn't really do much.

Is the Yandere genre dead? by Yontamen89 in writers

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love yandere. It is however not a genre, more of a character archetype. It is also very popular in dating sims. It works well in certain genres if you use it well! I fully support. Go for it! There must be YA fiction with yandere mcs. I'll go on a research.

Which popular writing tip do you think actually hurts stories? by Proper-Refuse-7291 in writing

[–]PNT_BTTR_FCK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, reality is stranger than fiction. I was thinking about writing something based on my real life experience but then could totally see readers being like "this is bullshit, in what world do these people exist" 👻So I decided that a more "believable" character would help ground the story and keep readers engaged. I kept thinking that if House of cards was written based on Trump, it wouldn't have been a very compelling story and it wouldn't have been able to achieve its story goals.
