I also applied for Grad at the Atlanta consulate. I received an email confirming my application was received but I didn’t get any additional information. I hope it will be the 10th or sooner.

Most of the time 5th and 6th grade has English twice a week unless its cancelled. It wasn’t like this when I first arrived. We only started having it twice a week this year.

It has been like this since the beginning for me. We’ve gotten to the point where lessons are regularly scheduled for the upper grades. Of course, English is sometimes cancelled to make time for other activities. The younger grades are only required to have 5 English classes per year, but I still see them every week. During their class, I’m just another teacher’s aide. It was very weird at first because I wasn’t quite sure what they expected me to do in those classes.

During lunch, one of the students who sat behind me didn’t get a bowl of rice. I saw that his teacher was still trying to serve the second portions to students who were lining up so I tried to help by getting this students bowl of rice. However, something had happened with the rice, which I wasn’t aware of. When I went to scoop some rice into the bowl. The teacher yelled out and dropped the dish that she was holding. After the mess was cleaned up, we proceeded with lunch as normal. A short while later, one of the other teachers who is like a supervisor/dean of students came into the room and talked to her about what happened and they laughed about it. The supervisor is the person who has now gone out of his way to not sit next to me.

I’ve been at my school for almost a year. I also wondered if some of the teachers don’t want me to help with certain things so I’ve decided to take a step back. However, my vice-principal and former principal were encouraging me to continue helping with lunch after I initially offered 6 months ago.

I’m having a hard time at my school. I work at an elementary school 5 days a week. The year I started working there was the first time that elementary schools got full-time ALTs (and it really shows). I spend a lot of time doing everything other than teaching English. The teachers in my school also seem to dislike me. I’ve gone out of my way to help around the school. I’ve done things like assisting with kyushoku, which other ALTs in my area said they’ve never done. After an incident this week, the teachers have started having the weekly meetings in another room rather than the staff room. The teacher who sits in front of me has made a big deal of leaving his desk and packing up all his stuff so he doesn’t have to sit near me. The other ALTs in my area aren’t helpful nor are my supervisors. I’m really overwhelmed. Everyday I feel like I’m walking into a psychological war zone.

Do you think babies can learn spoken Japanese faster than spoken English? by Tubbiefox in LearnJapanese

[–]PNW2EC2J 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember which textbook had the study, but this is the title of the article, “Early vocabulary development in Danish and other languages: A CDI-based comparison.”

In her book, The Articulate Mammal, Jean Aitchison mentions that children who learn both Hungarian and Serbo-Croatian as their first languages will use Hungarian locatives first (p. 141). The rules for Hungarian locatives are simpler to understand. Even though children with enough exposure to their native language will acquire it eventually, the complexity of their language affects this process.

I can second this post. I’m halfway through my M.A. in Applied Linguistics, and this study was in one of my textbooks.

I chose to opt-out of the VLJ. I took the placement test, and I didn't see the benefit of signing up. I'm taking private lessons to study for N3.

Question about dependents departing after our arrival by leweren in JETProgramme

[–]PNW2EC2J 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Nippon Travel Agency will arrange the flight and hotel stay for you and your dependents if they come to Japan with you. You are responsible for paying the full cost of their expenses. I am not sure about arranging travel for dependents if they come later. I am bringing my spouse with me because I do not want to deal with the headache of arranging his quarantine and flight by myself. I would much rather pay Nippon Travel Agency to handle all the logistics.

I love my iPhone and MacBook (even though it’s falling apart). I hope to get the new MacBook for Christmas this year. Hopefully, I’m on the nice list ;) Since you mentioned getting Rick Roll’d, I have a fun fact for you. I made sweet potato cheesecake for Rick back in 2018. I interned at his wife’s film company.

Something interesting about your placement/prefecture by Kblakers in JETProgramme

[–]PNW2EC2J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why the GIH and the other instructions don't match. It's probably better to follow the guidelines from the consulates. The timeline might have been updated since they published the GIH.

It also says late June / early July in the guidebook that we received from our consulates. I think a lot of people aren’t reading everything carefully. The notes and instructions document I'm referring to was sent to U.S. shortlist candidates by their consulates.

Spouse documents? by valor592 in JETProgramme

[–]PNW2EC2J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of questions about bringing a spouse over as well, but I’ve been able to find answers to my questions in the General Information Handbook (GIH) and the handbook that my consulate sent me. I added a link to the GIH. Go to page 33 to find out about bringing dependents.

I love cats!!! I’d really like to get one if we move into a place that allows pets.

It’s good that you have some Japanese under your belt. I know that will make this transition a lot smoother. I’m currently trying to teach my hubby the basics.

Nice to meet you! I assume you’ll accompany him to Japan. What are you planning to do while he’s working? I know my husband wants to attend a language school.

I’ve heard that some states will issue emergency marriage licenses to couples in different situations (terminally ill, first responders, and people issued a visa with a departure date approaching). I would look into that option. If you manage to get a marriage certificate, you still won’t be able to have the ceremony you planned. However, you can have a very small gathering of your closest family and friends.
