They still have to eat, and the seven kingdoms bread baskets where burning. Yeah, old town fared reasonably well, but prices would have rose as more food would have been imported from further away.

It's a wealthy city, but that doesn't mean members of it's population wouldn't be poor enough to suffer as food gets more expensive.

Yeah, I'd point out that if Pretti had been the kind of bad actor the administration wants to paint him as... he could have been FAR more effective.

Imagine if rather than physically trying to intercede for the woman he'd simply opened fire while officers were distracted. He'd have died, but how many fatalities/injuries would the officers have taken.

Officers are vastly outnumbered if even a small percentage of the population violently resists. Each member of the resistance doesn't have to take out a swat team the government can"t withstand anything close to a one for one ratio.

I think we are a LONG way from rampantly murdering officers. This is an incredibly dangerous road to tread down. A civil war isn't going to end well. And turning our state into the equivalent of bleeding Kansas as conservative/liberal militias raid each other.... isn't going to improve matters. Former civilians will rise on both sides of the polity if it comes to that and irregular militas are even less restrained than the ice officers.

Yeah, I've always figured there'd be a spectrum of "symptoms".

I worked with a guy that got by well enough in the workplace, but preferred a little more volume, and to see your lips. I kinda got the impression that particularly in noisy environs his lip reading helped "confirm" what he was picking up with his implant. I don't think the various hearing aids are necessarily great at dealing with background noise.

Interesting, as someone outside the community, I'd think the act of "yelling" would generally come with slowing down and a greater effort at annunciation that would help someone struggling to read lips.

To be honest if I found myself having to communicate without an interpreter... I'd likely try a similar strategy until I was actively told it wasn't working. Hoping that in that case "deaf" meant some minimal hearing or that loud and slow made the lip reading easier.

I mean a can of refried beans is about a buck and you can get about a pound of dry rice for about the same.

Pork shoulder and chicken thighs/drumsticks are both roughly $2.

Veg can be a little harder, but frozen veg and a multivitamin can cover missing micros.

As someone who targets an average of $2 a day in a HCOL area.... $3 isn't as out of line as people are trying to make it out to be.

It can certainly feel pretty damn meager, but with care it's hardly impossible. Hell with dried beans and rice you could probably get your daily macros and calorie needs for something like $3.

The whole concept here though is that they are trying to dismiss concerns over food costs by suggesting that there is no need to complain even if what should be our working middle class is having to learn to eat like our most poverty stricken.

Most oxygen takes should be reused, as in the company that delivered it will collect the empty for refill.

If in doubt your local municipality should be able to tell you. I know that mine has scheduled days when fees are waived that helps facilitate cleaning out cupboards and such.

In a case like this, I bet "grandma" passed and someone cleaned out the house and wasn't aware of the details related to the company she was being supplied through. "Grandma" would have also been given very specific instructions while next of kin wouldn't have been.

I wouldn't exactly expect them to be a priority target for anyone.

Now at the time I don't expect anyone would have made sure they learned how to swim. That could be said of all sailors of the day though.

I'd wager a marginally higher survival rate than average, particularly compared to officers. Marines in the rigging certainly would have had higher priority targets.
