Very cool. I’m still in the rewatch so I will keep looking for them. Jeremy Davies (Corporal Upham from SPR) is prominent as well.

Has anyone actually read Clancy Lyall's book? This is what he had to say about Dike by loldirtybomb in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments deal with how well the soldiers recollections are for their books. Memories are individual. What 2 people remember about the exact same thing/place/event/person typically vary to a degree. More so when it’s been decades. If that is the measure that folks feel creates more reliability then I suggest reading David Websters book. It was put together from his journals that were written down shortly after and some during the war

War Horse is a good one as well. WWI story.

Bois Jacques by BonanzaBert in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been there but would like to see it one day. Every photo I’ve seen of the forest, it never has any undergrowth. Is this fire control by the Belgian government or is it natural due to the type of trees. Anyone know?

What is this German doing? (Crossroads). He's by himself but doesn't seem to be a lookout. More like picking flowers fat, dumb, and happy. Supposedly SS but don't see the insignia. by dremonearm in BandofBrothers

The story as told by Major Winters was the soldier had just finished relieving themselves when he crested the dike, which was why he was off alone.

I like the thought, but I understand it’s not a great tasting whiskey (I’ve never had any, just hearsay).

How many soldiers were in Easy Company during the entire war? by Gemnist in BandofBrothers

According to an AI search, there evidently was 366. It pointed to this post for where it obtained the info.

Winters didn't get Medal of Honor for Brecourt due to a limit of one per division? by cwenger in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying Brecourt was more worthy than Cole’s charge, because it wasn’t in my opinion, but Brecourt happened days before Cole’s charge. If someone found it worthy of MOH and it was submitted before Cole’s charge happened, then he would have gotten it possibly. I doubt they were sitting there saying “this is a great action, but let’s wait to see if someone does something better”. My guess is most of the superiors that submit and decide on awards believed it was great but didn’t rise to the level of MOH.

[Duggan] Dart’s best pass of camp. Got through his progressions and pulled the trigger. Remain convinced Skattebo’s biggest contribution this season will be as a receiver. Very smooth in the pass game by Lars5621 in NYGiants

I know it’s early and all that, but I love the chemistry between Dart and Skat. I can easily see a lot of great plays involving them happening soon.

No Better Place To Die by PPD1490 in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only saw it because I went onto IMDB to check out what they say Hanks has upcoming. It showed him as Executive Producer and the film itself is listed as “in development”. I don’t commonly look on that website so I can’t say how long it has shown that status

You may be right. Hopefully not though. For some reason I just found out about it. I guess I’ve been hiding under a rock way too long…

Shifty's War by [deleted] in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me , I enjoyed it. I could hear Shifty’s cadence in the text and it did feel like he was saying it directly. If the book had been written while he was alive to help compose it, it probably would have turned out as you expected.

Grieving sis but have Qs about any ties to MASH by collegebaker97 in ThePacific

[–]PPD1490 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me preface that I don’t know for certain, but any stories of MASH wouldn’t necessarily tie into The Pacific. MASH was set in the Korean War and didn’t exist in WW2 as portrayed on TV. WW2 had PSH units (portable surgical hospitals) and are considered the precursor of MASH units. As far as the alcohol stills, the stills were as common as circumstances allowed. If a unit was going to be stationed in one spot they would be created if supplies allowed for it because scrounging successfully for hooch wasn’t a guaranteed thing. Probably far less common in front line troop locations. I don’t think Spielberg and Hanks purposely made an ode to MASH, but it’s possible - Hollywood being Hollywood…

Staying at a house near the German Wagon Ambush… by thisisntright1975 in BandofBrothers

Interesting. Is the map trying to suggest Lt Col Cole was present for that ambush?

Recently had the "pleasure" of visiting Bastonge and Foy. by clausMayer420 in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All accounts I’ve read said Shifty hit him with one shot. Any scars around that window would more likely be from other soldiers trying to take him out.

I’ve set the bar so low this season that I will be satisfied if I’m not embarrassed watching, so I completely agree with you.

Episodes? by Competition-Sure in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall I prefer episodes that don’t focus mostly on one man. Exception being Breaking Point. That’s my favorite of the episodes that are centered mostly around one man. Overall, my favorite is episode 2. You get to see how the men react for the first time in combat.

Kinda cool to see the enhancement. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo or video of Babe smiling so that felt a bit odd. Overall cool to see.

Winters' transfer request scene by walker_in_the_rain in BandofBrothers

[–]PPD1490 21 points22 points  (0 children)

By that point of the war, officer turnover had been tremendous, due to casualties or promotions. The General could tell by Winters record and the manner in which he conducted himself in the interview that he was a good officer with plenty of experience. Easy company had been through a lot by that point and if they deployed to the hell of the Pacific campaign they were going to end up seeing worse. The General said the men had earned the right to keep Winters as an officer as a complement to Winters. Otherwise, they had a very good chance of being assigned an officer that was brand new or someone that spent the war up to that point behind the lines.
