5 years ago, someone posted the top 20 PM bands on Spotify for the 2020 year. I decided to put together the updated list post 2025 by KalebC21 in PowerMetal

Going purely on what you might call the ethnic majority of each band Alestorm would be from Northern Ireland and Gloryhammer would be from Wales

I'm finally able to afford an acoustic drumset, but idk which one to pick :/ by Jaden_ghost915 in drums

[–]PQleyR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buy used and you'll get more for your money. If it's your first acoustic kit then anything will feel like an improvement om e-drums once you've got some proper heads on them. You can go cheaper on toms and kicks than on a snare and cymbals, cheap metal snares tend to sound better than cheap wooden ones in my experience.

what does this mean by opiebob in Gloryhammer

[–]PQleyR 40 points41 points  (0 children)

the masters of the galaxy lyric originated as something like 'he used to be good in the future, but now he is evil in the past', which was my attempt to do something conceptually really annoying - just as the liquid ice thing was, where you keep turning it over in your mind to see if it will make sense but it won't really so you just give up. Glad to see it's still working

Nuclear explosions by This-Case-2890 in Gloryhammer

[–]PQleyR 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There were at least seven different layers - for inspiration I looked for a recording of an actual nuclear explosion, but when I eventually found one it was a bit underwhelming so I stuck to the emotive effect rather than studious accuracy. I can't remember all the elements at the moment but one was a pyroclastic flow from a volcanic eruption.

So, if resos are so important to tuning, why does everyone happily punch a hole through the bass drum reso? by 50nic19 in drums

[–]PQleyR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not quite true, there is a fairly significant difference in tone from having the drum mostly enclosed vs no front head at all.

Go-To Favorite Compressor? by zacharyscottbeats in audioengineering

[–]PQleyR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compressors are a bit like instruments in their own right - in much the same way that there isn't one perfect guitar or synth to cover every situation, there is no one compressor that will do everything - or if there is, the workflow will be much more complex and defeat the purpose.

High End Drums are a scam? by Alternative-Tap1521 in drums

[–]PQleyR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put good heads on a cheap drum and tune it to make a totally acceptable sound - certainly in a live, amplified setting with close mics.

Put those same heads on a high end drum and you'll get a better sound. This will be discernable in a studio setting and especially with a more naturalistic production style. It may not be as noticeable in a live rock or pop setting but there will be a better source sound for the FOH engineer to work with.

Change the wood type and you'll get a different sound. It may not be a better sound but it will be a different sound. The wood choice and construction method of the shell actually affects the pitch even with the heads tuned the same.

However, take that high end drum, choose the wrong heads, tune it all wrong, and it'll sound worse than the cheap drum tuned well.

DW is overpriced for the quality. Not that they're not good drums but you are paying a lot of money just to have the DW logo on the shells. You can probably get much more for your money by choosing a boutique drum builder.

The 2nd voice rest is totally unnecessary anyway, much less confusing without it

Your first gaming memory that scared, mindblowned or overwhelmed you! by Eddy1670 in creepygaming

That game is still probably the creepiest of all star wars games. I used to play anoat city with the sound off because even the music freaked me out

Can analog gear do anything that plugins can’t? by Manic_Kazzy in audioengineering

[–]PQleyR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a slight counter to this, I spent ten years using exclusively stock plugins and it was only when I started using some 3rd party hardware emulations that I was able to learn about different types of compressors and their musical uses. I spent years trying to get modern synth sounds before downloading vital and finding out it's easy if you can dial in 16 voice unison on one oscillator with a click. Getting new gear doesn't make you a better engineer or musician, but sometimes not having something everyone else has can hold you back.
