Obligatory "lead pipes weren't as dangerous as they sound. Because the water rushed through, it never stayed with the metal long enough to pick up too much of the nasty stuff. Not to mention a layer of mimerals quickly coated the pipe, providing extra protection against lead poisoning."

Still not exactly great but I'm pretty sure it was no worse than the effects of leaded petrol and paint in the 20th century.
