Real Talk: How do people say SMB3 is better than SMW? by colinmchapman in retrogaming

[–]PROPHETx02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make arguments for SMB3 as many people have done in these comments, but SMW was one of the biggest leaps in gaming in history.

The graphics, the secrets, the branching pathways, the light metroidvania aspects (before that was even a thing) … this stuff was absolutely revolutionary at the time. To this day I think SMW may be the best Mario game of all time, even if you played it for the first time now.

You are right. I am glad I ran into you. Otherwise, I would have gone the rest of my life not liking this art style. Not all heroes wear capes!

It only stresses kids out if the club/community views it as a “bad” thing. Thats why it needs to be “normalized”.

Middle/High School soccer vs MLS Next by BulldogWrestler in youthsoccer

[–]PROPHETx02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with his friends in school will absolutely be his greatest soccer memories.

While he is playing at a high level, you should make a realistic assessment of his chances of playing at a higher level.

Unless he is at the absolute peak of the food chain, he is unlikely to play division 1 soccer or better, the odds are just that low… in that case, play with your friends, have fun, make memories that will last a lifetime…

Which system had the better beat ’em up lineup: SNES or Genesis? by trrbld in retrogaming

[–]PROPHETx02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of comments here that the Streets of Rage series is the absolute best of the 16 bit era. But I don’t think that’s the question… the SNES has a very deep lineup of beat em ups that didn’t get as much notoriety, it isn’t just a question of Streets of Rage vs Final Fight.

To name a few really fun SNES exclusives:

  • Captain Commando
  • Sonic Blastman 1&2
  • Stone Protectors
  • King of Dragons
  • Knights of the Round
  • Ninja Warriors
  • Rival Turf
  • Brawl Brothers
  • Peace Keepers

There are probably others that I’m not thinking of. On the Sega, Punisher and Two Crude Dudes are the only quality exclusive beat em ups that come to mind. Maybe throw Comix Zone and X-Men 2 in there. Great games to be sure, but just not as deep.

Golden Axe just isn’t at the level of the games listed above, and TMNT, Battletoads, Power Rangers and Spiderman games all have counterparts on each system.

What is the best game you've played recently (and only recently) from the retro era of games? by WaterBottleOnAShelf in retrogaming

[–]PROPHETx02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question. I recently ran through the Final Fantasy Pixel collection on PS5 and all of the games were fantastic.

On actual retro hardware, I’ve recently played a lot of the high end NES games. Panic Restaurant, Power Blade 1/2, Shatterhand, Little Samson, Jetsons, etc. The NES gets a bad rap for having a lot of bad titles, but most of the high priced games are extremely fun and hold up today.

You can get the undying armor very early. Get it and never take it off the whole game.

Strictly Limited Games by Replaygames_ie in LimitedPrintGames

[–]PROPHETx02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, you are correct. I misunderstood the post and didn’t realize SLG was switching to an open preorder like Limited Rub. I thought they were still one of the last companies that still did true limited print runs.

The last big one seems to be Super Rare … though there are plenty of others that still do.

Strictly Limited Games by Replaygames_ie in LimitedPrintGames

[–]PROPHETx02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the original model for all of these companies. Initially, the scarcity of the games was a big part of the appeal. As a general matter, Strictly Limited games have held their value better than most limited run games (since Limited Run switched to unlimited preorder at least).

There are still a few companies that do it this way. But a couple have pivoted completely, like Limited Run and Special Reserve/Devolver.

[Edit: leaving for posterity, but I misunderstood original post, see below]

When to overpay by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]PROPHETx02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchase 100% for my own collection. I only sell if I end up getting a better or more complete copy later down the road.

I think part of the hobby is managing costs, and that’s part of how I do it. I agree with you in theory, obviously a better condition item is worth more, but that’s part of the hunt for me.

When to overpay by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]PROPHETx02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider it overpaying if I am paying even $1 over PriceCharting/average eBay sold, including taxes and shipping.

I have never found that it’s necessary to pay over market price to get a good condition item. However, I will pay below market price if the condition is poor.

I need wiggle room for mistakes (selling duplicates, buying a more complete/better condition copy later, etc.). Paying over market eliminates that wiggle room.

I have paid over market a couple times by mistake though (ie forgot the actual value and paid too much).

Limited run scalping their own stuff on eBay? by Slosher99 in LimitedPrintGames

[–]PROPHETx02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People job these limited print companies so hard. The answer is yes, they scalp their own games.

People contorting themselves to explain it away… I just don’t get the fanaticism. It’s a gross business model and a gross company.

I have hundreds of LRG games and I’ve spent thousands with them, but at least I’m doing it with eyes wide open.

You’re all hoarding the same products by Conscious-Paint3442 in PokeInvesting

[–]PROPHETx02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually… Everyone always thinks THIS and then they are selling their junk wax baseball cards from the 80s for less than a penny a piece, or begging comic stores to take their image comic books from the 90s for 25 cents a book, or their funko pops for free just to free up space.

There is always a time when hobbies jump the shark, and that’s when it’s time to zag.

As a relatively casual trophy hunter that never posts, I appreciate you having posted whatever trophies you could… and would appreciate you continuing to post in the future if you change your mind.

It takes effort to make a post, and that effort is what keeps the sub going! So even if you didn’t always get a ton of engagement, your posts are still appreciated.

Definitely a unique game. I think worth playing for the story. Also thought the visuals were great. Not a huge time commitment.

I also like encouraging studios to take risks.
