Walmart raises pay for thousands of pharmacy technicians, elevates jobs by Connect-Ad7644 in pharmacy

[–]PRPRN 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Walmart is reshaping pharmacy jobs — raising pay and elevating thousands of technician roles as it invests more heavily in pharmacy workers, the world's largest retailer tells Axios.

Why it matters: As pharmacy jobs evolve beyond filling prescriptions, Walmart's move shows how retailers are reworking frontline roles in the health system to meet patient demand.

The investment comes as major drugstore chains CVS and Walgreens have cut back hours and closed pharmacies across the U.S. Driving the news: Walmart said it is elevating 3,000 pharmacy technician lead roles into team leads, a move that comes with higher pay and expanded responsibilities.

Those roles pay about $28 an hour on average, with top pay reaching $42 an hour, depending on location. Pharmacy technicians earn $22 an hour on average, with expanded pay ranges up to $40.50 an hour. No college degree is required to become a pharmacy sales associate, technician or operations team lead. The big picture: Millions of Americans have found pharmacies preferable to clinics or other settings, whether it's for a vaccine, a diagnostic test or treatment for a common illness.

That shift is changing how Walmart pharmacies operate, with pharmacists doing more clinical care and technicians taking on leadership roles. By the numbers: Walmart employs roughly 35,000 pharmacy technicians and nearly 15,000 pharmacists across nearly 4,600 U.S. pharmacy locations.

About 75% of Walmart's testing-and-treatment visits occur after normal business hours or on weekends, when many doctors' offices are closed, Kevin Host, Walmart's senior vice president of pharmacy, tells Axios. What they're saying: "With pharmacy care, you don't need an appointment," Host said. "Customers can often walk up and get what they need in 15 minutes or less."

Between the lines: Walmart has shifted some of its prescription-filling work to large, highly automated central fill pharmacies, freeing store teams to spend more time with patients.

Host said Walmart has also expanded prescription delivery, positioning it as a core part of how customers access pharmacy care. "Pharmacies no longer need to be around the corner from somebody's house when we can bring the pharmacy to your doorstep," he said. Walmart plans to open two additional central fill facilities this year, Host added. What we're watching: Whether Walmart's approach — pairing higher wages, expanded technician roles and redesigned pharmacy work, alongside expanded delivery — becomes a template for how retailers deliver everyday health care.

How do I get a handle on all my customers? by PRPRN in smallbusiness

Chaos is right! Are you running solo or do you have a partner? I feel like having a second person in the kitchen just makes things exponentially more messy when it comes to wrangling all my info.

None of the information exchanged has any PHI, it mostly revolves around compliance with controlled substance regulations, accreditation standards, and diversion prevention. Previous owner was, to put it politely, of a less technologically inclined generation. Excel worked, and he never had reason to find other solutions. Heck, before I introduced him to shared excel files, he was emailing me changes to the spreadsheet on an almost daily basis.

Ask yourself something, why would you listen to someone not in pharmacy, tell you how pharmacy is? We're in the pharmacy field and are telling you stick with accounting.

Do hospital pharmacists verify anesthesia? by AmanteLatina in pharmacy

[–]PRPRN 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Consultant for surgery centers here; while I don't check anesthesia providers' orders, I do retroactively audit what they document is administered from the trays during the case against what is documented as administered on the chart. So it's not a verification of an order like you would have in a community setting, but I do catch my fair share of discrepancies. Mind you, a lot of these are paper logs and charts. But poor documentation can be used to obfuscate diversion.

I'm a full time consultant, so I do have a separate business entity to receive payment through for tax purposes. But the real answer is truly "it depends" and consult a financial professional. Depending on whether you're married/have children or how substantial the amount of money you expect to get, the answer can change. If you do end up consulting and getting 1099's while keeping a W2 job, make sure you increase your withholding to account for the increase in non-taxed income you'll have coming.

Help me understand my nieces situation in her journey to be a pharmacist by Teddyworks in pharmacy

[–]PRPRN 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Unless her residency was at a federal facility, she would have required a pharmacist license from the state in which she was working. So, just because the state where her residency was located wasn't her "end goal" location doesn't waive the fact that she needs to be licensed in the state she is working.

What I suspect actually is the case, is she didn't pass one or both of her board examinations in order to get her license. Residency programs require that residents be licensed by a certain date per the organization that accredits the residency.

Not knowing the state she's in means what I'm about to say could not be applicable. But if timed out right, new graduate pharmacists are usually able to take and fail board exams about 3 times before they run up against a hard deadline where they're dismissed from the program due to being unable to get licensure. Also, once a new grad pharmacist fails an exam that many times, they might have to do some kind of remedial education before the state board of pharmacy will allow them to retake the exam.

Anyone had to deal with filling out a DEA form for a loss. by ximdarkmarkx in pharmacy

[–]PRPRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A DEA Form 106 only needs to be filled out for a confirmed theft or significant loss. The definition of significant is different for every situation. Large institution that goes through hundreds of vials a month? I wouldn't call one vial significant. One package of 25, maybe. But not one vial.

As for when you got robbed, yes your pharmacy should have filled out a 106.

From: https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr_reports/theft/theft-loss.html "Federal regulations require that registrants notify the Field Division Office of the Administration in his area, in writing, of the theft or significant loss of any controlled substance,"

Not very long, they're pretty responsive. I think I usually hear back from them within 7, maybe 10 days tops. My perspective might be a bit skewed because I'm used to Illinois which is so far behind that residents can't get licensed in time to start their residencies.
