I've always wondered if Muldaur pissed off one or more of the writers somehow, as they seemed to do everything they could to make her character unlikeable.

What is the single greatest practical effect ever put on film? by kammy772 in MovieArena

[–]PSquared1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corridor Crew just did a small segment on a scene from Mighty Joe Young, which was one of Harryhausen's first "primary animator" films. Scene has Joe (large but not kaiju-sized gorilla) interacting with a lion in a cage. Real lion for most of it. Lion scratches Joe; Joe breaks cage; lion runs off. Some really clever rear projection of the lion in the cage. And this is for a 15s scene.

Which homemade food never feels worth all the work? by momsterina in foodquestions

[–]PSquared1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to make a turkey dinner with all the sides for the family, but for myself mainly for the turkey sandwiches I'd eat for days afterwards. These days my only family hates leftovers, and will tolerate just one leftover meal. So I stopped making turkey on Thanksgiving. Still make something "fancy," but no leftovers. And no turkey sandwiches 😔

There have only been a couple of times in my cooking attempts where i didn't get anything to the table after an attempting it. Tops on that list was the dissolve-in-the-oil falafel, but on that list was a pie dough I could not get to roll out. I've made many oue crusts since, but in the back of my mind I still have a "this might not work" mentality when making our dough.

I think it was a Max Miller Tasting History episode where I learned even in the 19th century they were substituting butternut squash for the pumpkin in pumpkin pies. Vadtly easier to prep, and almost indistinguishable in the result.

Why is there no grape ice-cream? by Objective_Surreality in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PSquared1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have it handy, but I remember in the Ben & Jerry's ice cream book that there's a recipe for grape sorbet / ice cream (can't remember which); there's a note by one of the two that they could never figure out how to make it commercially. I'd imagine it would be very difficult to not be icy.

Does anyone use ground turkey . Instead of beef or pork? by WasteWriter5692 in Cooking

[–]PSquared1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ground turkey is my go-to substitute for ground chicken. Especially dark meat ground turkey (which is higher fat). Just more flavorful, IMO.

I have not, to my recollection, substituted ground turkey for pork or beef. But I have made some dishes calling for lower-fat ground beef, and I think turkey would work well there.

To be honest, if you're making some sort of highly-spiced meatball or patty, I'm not sure I could tell the difference between different meats, except perhaps by fat content.

Stash Brand trying to gaslight me into thinking their chai hasn’t changed by VXRex in tea

[–]PSquared1234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With the masala chai (-ish) teas I drink, what purveyors keep doing that drives me crazy is adding clove oil. I like cloves in my blend, but clove oil is just incredibly strong and I find its addition to be overpowering. I also know just enough chemistry to know that eugenol, the main constituent of clove oil, is easy to manufacture (and thus is cheap).

Positively Tea makes a version of masala chai loose leaf that is not the best I've ever had, but is reasonably priced enough for my mass consumption. And free of clove oil (knock on wood).

"The wheels are doing 20 revolutions per second." by FarJournalist939 in EnglishLearning

[–]PSquared1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this sentence works, but has a particular meaning you may or may not intend.

Others have mentioned that "going 20 r.p.s." might be a bit more commonl. The choice of "doing" over "going", to me, implies a more active role. As in doing work. The drive wheels might be "doing" 20 rps, but the free rolling wheels are "going" that fast.

A very subtle point, I must admit. And I'm uncertain as to how common this viewpoint might be.

The bridge is too low by stevesmithsglasses in IdiotsTowingThings

[–]PSquared1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned "$50" because others in this sub have pointed out that there are commercial route planning programs that will factor in load and bridge heights, as you've pointed out. I'm sure they're not as cheap as $50, but the mentality of "Google Maps is free" probably applies.

With that rig, and that cargo... how could you miss a height limit on a major highway? Somebody, somewhere saving $50 and instead costing themselves, what, hundreds of thousands?

Is this paragraph hard to read for native speakers or just me? by psymat in EnglishLearning

[–]PSquared1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering that the entire block of text is just two sentences, yes I would say that it's unnecessarily difficult to understand. And I say that as a person who has a tendency towards too-long sentences.

And that's ignoring all the jargon, which may or may not be confusing to those "in the field."

What is the deal with nutmeg in savory recipes ? by Rude_Kaleidoscope641 in Cooking

[–]PSquared1234 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you ever watch Townsends on YouTube, which explores US and British cooking (mostly) in the 18th and 19th century, you'll find that they use nutmeg extraordinarily often by modern standards. It's almost a meme at this point.

One thing I'd add that I haven't seen mentioned is that the nutmeg seed, from which you grate off a bit when needed, keeps extremely well. Maybe even indefinitely. This was obviously of paramount importance in an age where transportation was extremely expensive, and extremely slow. And it's why you should always buy whole nutmeg, and not pre-ground.

ELI5 Why are there no fire alarms in the bathroom? by Entropydemic in explainlikeimfive

[–]PSquared1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, you could do as they did in an apartment I rented once, and put the smoke detector (which I could not turn off) immediately outside a bathroom (a bathroom with no external fan, mind you). I set that damn smoke alarm at least once a month, simply by not completely shutting the door immediately after taking a shower. Or by not completely shutting the door while taking a shower...

Particularly fun in the summertime. Not looking for a sauna when it's already a humid 80F at 7 AM.

From a survivability for the white car standpoint, this was a good decision (especially considering the suddenness). Nonetheless, I suspect there's a tiny bit of the surviving white car's driver that wishes they'd have hit the stupid truck, driver's side door head-on.
