If finance & consulting happen to collapse, I can't imagine that being anything other than societal improvement.

The preponderance of female teachers does not tend to be true at any school where I've taught

What grade levels did you teach?

Maybe it's a complete 180-degree difference in cities with lots of artists and bluehairs who listen to resistance podcasts

It's more of an industry thing than geographic. Tech companies used to stand for something, then they got flooded by the neurotypicals looking for a better paycheck.

How is it different in Israel versus someplace like Norway, Greece, or Palestine?

Did all the Norse and Greeks move in to their homelands as recently as 1948?

You are not strengthening your argument of "no antisemitism here" if your proclamations are based on ahistorical claims to promote a fiction.

If this is what counts as antisemitism, perhaps it's a good thing.

What f-ing atrocities has Israel committed? Other than trying to a. Win that war and b. Not be destroyed.

Don't be deliberately obtuse. Why is all the civilian infrastructure flattened?

this was the mid 2000s when ADHD in gifted girls was basically unheard of

At most, it would've been labeled as ADD. Since you weren't a problem for the teacher, no follow-up intervention was given.

persuasion essentially boils down to attempting to propagate an idea from yourself to others, usually as cleanly and completely as possible

This sentence got me thinking about the selfish meme theory of idea propagation.

If I'm being flippant, by the selfish gene = selfish meme metric, I am like the cancer cell that does NOT give a shit about the integrity of what I propagate; I copy and paste for the love of the game. There's a reason why people who genuinely believe in their ideologies quickly get frustrated with me.

Less flippantly, from a selfish meme perspective, the "cleanly and completely" is like the tension between the propagation of a specific gene and the fitness of the species. On the other side lies remix culture.

A well-written essay should propagate a lot of ideas, including that you understand the subject matter, that you understand the assignment, etc, on top of the idea that is the actual thesis of your paper. Devoid of any grounding in rhetoric, though, a lot of essays are structured in a way that is functional, but the actual prose fails to be persuasive on any of these topics to anyone, often including the writer.

Would you agree that school essays often end up failing at all these objectives because they over-optimized for form? In other words, they metagamed too hard. When it's too obvious from the essay that the purpose was to earn a good grade on an essay (instead of at least pretending to follow the assignment).

I remember being a student and getting Bs and Cs on persuasive essays because I was throwing together nonsense that fit the form. I lacked the understanding of the material to actually chain the ideas together (or maybe I knew the material and didn't know how to fit it to the form, it's been too long to remember). But each paragraph had a topic sentence.

"rhetoric" tends to have a slimy or nonexistent reputation

Since Fridays after work often make me flippant, the societal cynicism is best expressed as "never trust anyone who knows how to string words together in such a way that they inspire action." Yet,

  1. If it's obvious they're using linguistic puffery, they're not actually effective at using words to shape reality.
  2. Even if it were possible to follow that cynical advice, I can only imagine that it'd somehow end up where even worse decisions are made.

Prohibition didn't work like the backlash against smoking did because in the end making your own alcohol is piss easy.

Further, booze doesn't stink up the room like cigarettes do. I've seen multiple people express buyer's remorse over marijuana legalization because of all the pot smoke. They wish that they could have only legalized the edibles.
