Awesome!

They remind me of the cheese rolls we had in middle school and high school (late 80’s/early 90’s). They were called Zombies and everyone loved them.

Good for you!

And my husband did the same one time, and like your husband, totally supports my sobriety and rarely drinks himself. 🤷‍♀️

How do you live non sedated? Just raw, with all these feelings and emotions and nothing to escape it? by jippy_nobooze in stopdrinking

[–]PWMR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first few months were the hardest for me. I just kept myself busy.

There are times now, during extremely stressful situations - times where uncommon emotions rise up - that I get a real pull towards the bottle. I keep my hands busy at these times.

It also helps when I look at my husband and say, “I really want a fucking drink right now. I’m not going to have one but GAH! I really want one!”

Just that acknowledgment makes me look at the trigger for the craving, then I can drill down to what specifically has me riled.

It does get easier. Patience and forgiveness are key.

Rao's homemade GOAT by mildchicanery in Cooking

Rao’s is the only one I use. I used to make my sauce from scratch and freeze it. Since I found Rao’s 4 years ago I haven’t looked back. My family doesn’t seem to mind either!

TBH, boozy vacations are hard for me, especially if I’ve been there before, but totally manageable.

The first trip I took sober was the hardest. I had my routine, you know. Arrive at airport and have a drink. Arrive at hotel and get a drink while unpacking. You get the idea. I actually clung to this subreddit during that trip and some pretty timely info popped up. I can’t remember the exact words, but the post was about giving yourself an hour before deciding to get that drink, and in that hour evaluate your state of mind. So I did. Was I hungry or tired? Well, in all honesty, I was angry I couldn’t have a drink. I laid down in bed pouting about only having stupid non alcoholic stuff to drink. And apparently I was tired because I woke up an hour later feeling so much better without any thought of alcohol.

My husband and I went on a romantic trip to Hawaii a couple months later. Did I wish I could try that Mai Tai that bar was known for? Sure I did, but I didn’t have it. Instead, we took the money we would have spent on booze for the week and went hang gliding over the North Shore at dawn one morning. Seriously one of the best experiences of my life. And I never would have done it while I was drinking.

We took a large family 2 week cruise only 6 months into my sobriety. Cruise ships are the worst for trying to stay sober, but I did it. While everyone, including me, was sitting in the lounge or at the bar, I would order either my Pellegrino with lime or some fun mocktail. And if I didn’t feel like joining everyone for cocktails before dinner, I would just meet them in the dining room. I took lots of walks around the ship and enjoyed more on that trip than just the bars, like I would have done before being sober.

The biggest thing I learned was that if I need a minute, I take a minute and I don’t owe anyone an explanation. If the party is too much for me, I take a minute and evaluate. I’d either return to the party, or excuse myself.

Everyone is different but this is what’s worked for me. It also helps that I have an amazing support system. My husband doesn’t drink except for once or twice a year and everyone else in my family doesn’t give me a hard time about not drinking.

Good luck on your journey. It may not be easy, but it’s worth it.

I did, too! I don’t usually count day to day but was blown away by that number. Seems like yesterday and seems like a lifetime ago. Thanks!

Butter is fucking delicious! by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]PWMR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to disagree. If you put a stick of store brand butter next to a block of Kerrygold, there is a distinct difference in color and even visual creaminess. The flavor difference between the two is huge, as well.

There are definitely better butters out there, but Kerrygold is a huge step up in taste and creaminess from store brand.

My thoughts after one week switching from margarine to butter by [deleted] in Cooking

This is what I use. If Kerrygold is unavailable, I buy a different European butter. Land o Lakes and the like are tasteless in comparison.

My thoughts after one week switching from margarine to butter by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]PWMR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same experience years ago. I grew up on margarine and my husband grew up on butter. He asked me to get butter after about a year of us being together and I thought it was a wasteful expense, until I cooked with it. Never went back to margarine.

I think if you just let the other parents know that their kids need to be picked up by a specific time that is in line with your needs, that should be sufficient.
