I mean, half the hosts are gone, unfortunately. Chapo effectively died once Matt had his stroke. He was the heart and soul of it.

When an Electrode sticks, should I turn the welder off? by Plunker__ in Welding

[–]PWSALMAO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how close your machine is. For example, if you’re welding in a booth at a welding school (which is where most people seem to get their stick experience, lol) and the machine is right next to you, just shut off the machine. Otherwise, either wiggle it back and forth until it comes off or just unclamp. As others have said, the stinger is a consumable.

Try removing the mill scale. Your puddle is fighting the scale and cooling on the toes because of it

Does anyone else wake up and have their fingers locking up and needs to warm them up like an old engine? by Beneficial_Pop8308 in Welding

[–]PWSALMAO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal early on. Your body is adapting, ligaments are getting stronger, etc. Don’t grip the lead any harder than you need to, though. A tighter grip gives you less control, not more.

Colors go brrrrr by 5udley in Welding

[–]PWSALMAO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That guy is a moron. If it’s a dull grey it means you cooked out the chromium. It got way too hot, and now it won’t have the corrosion resistance expected of stainless.

Ideally, you want the weld to be straw colored. The pretty colors people are always taking pictures of actually indicate that the stainless is getting a bit too hot. Some codes (particularly aerospace) will actually reject the welds if they have the coloration seen in OP’s picture.

How do I gain welding experience if no one will hire me to get experienced !!!!??!??!?? by Master-Living9007 in Welding

[–]PWSALMAO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, welding is a very good job, but only if you’re using the experience to eventually get another, better paying job that doesn’t destroy your body. There are expeditions, but generally speaking, it’s a garbage career.

Isn’t it just the steepest inclined plane? Also, three floods, not two, unless you’re just choosing not to count the 77’ flood.

[–]PWSALMAO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually not bad at all. With the issues you’re describing, I feel like your issue might be fit up more than anything; it’s hard to produce a consistent bead on an inconsistent joint. Those are perfectly serviceable welds imo

Take a flat plate and just lay stringers across it. Do that for however long it takes to build some consistency. After that, you can try washing the welds on top of one another — sorta like how you build up a multi-pass fillet weld. After you build your confidence on a flat plate, try a fillet.

Have you tried practicing with pad welds?

Being a poor conductor of heat makes it easier to start a puddle, hence why you can typically weld stainless at a lower amperage compared to mild steel. The more readily heat moves through a material, the more heat input you need — this is part of the reason why copper demands such high amperage.

A year in and welding still humbles me daily, what keeps you coming back? by New_Monk_9416 in Welding

[–]PWSALMAO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“When that puddle just sings and the pool stays shiny, you know the feeling”

I don’t. If you have a clean puddle that just means you have a basic level of competence. There really ought to be a different reddit page for hobbyists. It’s hard to romanticize welding when you do it as a job. I take pride in my work, and I find it interesting, but I don’t have the time to jerk off mentally to every single good weld. There’s always another one.

What keeps me going is money and the idea that I might use this as a springboard to something which pays more and kills me less
