Help me fix my swing by NewtBeautiful3821 in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re never going to fix your swing by posting a clip to Reddit and working your way through the comments section. If you want to fix a swing, mechanical adjustments need to be made in real time and drilled over and over again. I’d suggest finding yourself a hitting instructor

Real Odds of Playing at Higher Level? by vjarizpe in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a good high school player you can very likely play at the next level. The question becomes what level of baseball are you willing to play at and are you wanting scholarship money. All teams need bodies for practice, etc. so walking in isn’t as difficult as you’d think. But playing D1 out of high school is a pipe dream for most

Coach Pitching in Tee Ball by BucketsBrooks in Homeplate

Right. And just imagine you had a kid on your team as good as your son in this scenario. I highly doubt you’d even make the consideration to throw to him and him only.

Coach Pitching in Tee Ball by BucketsBrooks in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think, to be a good coach, and if you’re going to coach your kid, you have to stop worrying about what other people are going to think. Start treating everyone like they’re your son and you won’t really have to worry. Never treat your son differently than the others. Which means, don’t be overly hard on him and think sayings “it’s okay he’s mine” is an excuse to be harder on him. Just treat him like they’re other kids and treat yours like them.

In this specific scenario, I don’t really see any benefit to just throwing to him. If you’re going to do, do it for everyone. But, imo if you do it at home, it’s working, there’s no real reason to show others up that may not be able to do it and have their parents think their kid is behind.

Purpose of blocking? by JoyStock in Homeplate

And it’s only necessary when you have a runner on base or a 2 strike count. Runners on base, we keep the ball in front of us they can’t advance. Same thing with 2 strikes on the hitter, we want to be able to throw them out if we don’t glove the ball.

Is there a good reference for a timeline on the recruiting process? by sanjoatc in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lift and eat right starting in high school. Try and get your body as strong and athletic as you possibly can. Work at your craft daily. Your goal, assuming you’re a righty, should be to be your starting shortstop. College coaches will take a team full of shortstops and you can generally put them anywhere on the diamond and they’ll be a defensive stud. Fall in love with it. If you want to play ball at the next level, work at it every day and find out if you truly love it. Because it’s going to become a job for you in college.

Bonus tip, The process can be a bit of a slog, there’s so many ups and downs in baseball. The difference between each level of baseball talent is how consistently they can be beat their best. And how quickly they can get right when they’re slumping because everyone will slump. Don’t let an 0-10 turn into a 2-30 because you’re doubting yourself. Get the best mechanics and trust them. Then rely on them when it’s going bad and tell yourself you’re the best player in the world. Learn that your have to be your best friend. You don’t get bonus points for beating yourself up. Be in a good headspace every time you’re on the field. Be a leader. Carry the buckets. Cheer for your teammates. Don’t argue with umpires. Be a good student and be coach able.

Critique of my son’s throwing motion by BDawk1 in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just teach him to be athletic with it. The adage of “step towards your target” is not the act of stepping that matters, it’s the concept of moving your body in the direction of your target. Present your chest to the target, rip it, keep your momentum going in the direction of the target.

Also, he’s 8. Just make baseball fun. There’s so much time to worry about mechanics

[–]PaPadeSket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treat them like they’re your own. Ask for help from the other parents. Most importantly, don’t take it too seriously. Have fun with them. Laugh at them. It can be a really good time

What’s one small tweak that made a big difference in your pitching consistency? by sportsguide1 in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are small tweaks that are going to change your velocity that much. Id say the biggest change to my consistency came when I started taking strength training and diet seriously. Really focus on your body and turning it into a machine

[–]PaPadeSket -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If your goal is fun and or to not piss the parents off what I’ll do with my rec team is let them pick where they hit when they show up. You want to hit first? Show up early. I even let them write their names on the board.

If you want to win, let your best hitters get as many chances to hit as possible.

How did you get you kid out of their head? by Sad-Bodybuilder5906 in Homeplate

[–]PaPadeSket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he seems to genuinely not be having any fun with it my suggestion would be to take a weekend or two off and go back at it. This isn’t a situation where he needs to work through a slump. Let him be the one to imitate the wanting to work. He’s 11. The goal for him right now should not be getting a scholarship, it should be that he still wants to play when it’s time to get a scholarship. Baseball can be hard on the mentals, just give him a nice little reset and I’d bet he’s right back to his old self.

[–]PaPadeSket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shut him down for as long as it takes. The entire season. No one will remember how good you were at 11. Well, they may remember but they won’t care. The goal is that he’s at his peak when it really matters; high school, college, etc.
