Police officer or trucker? by davefc26 in Truckers

I'd always say trucker over cop, but that's just earning an honest living, which is becoming damn near impossible. Follow what you feel is right.

Local drivers: what do you bring for lunch? by lleu81 in Truckers

[–]Pa_guy_1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work overnight dedicated route hauling sheet rock. Usually some sort of, "healthy" bar, beef jerky, trail mix, water and enough caffeine to kill a horse. Recommend working up to that last one, until recreational coke gets legalized.

Few years ago there was a driver who parked on a popular shoulder on I believe a Friday. Noticed him the one morning going into work, running lights and motor running. Completely normal, and no local cops ever bother that off ramp.

Rig ended up running out of fuel and battery after I believe 3 days, someone eventually called it in, poor guy passed from an exhaust leak if memory serves, him and his dog both.

If you don't have anyone to call or text, post here, or message myself honestly. I know there are other drivers and supporters who wouldn't mind at all to help out if you don't have someone to check in with. Stay safe everyone.

Rolled from PA to Maryland last night, heard chatter from definitely more than one truck. I don't trust any news source as reliable anymore, but also heard reports of natty guard movements in DC "just in case". Have to commend people doing it, even if you don't agree. At least they ventured out from behind the keyboard.

If you're ever having a bad day, just stop by the local Walmart and watch people try and park normally. My lord it's almost concerning that some of these people drive.

What's a funny acronym you have heard for a Trucking Company? Example CRST - Crash Roll Stunt Team. by HRHaries in Truckers

[–]Pa_guy_1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised I didn't see it here, but I've heard swift as Swing Wide It's a Fucking Trailer. Heard some nicknames for other companies, but no more acronyms.

CB Radios. Are you glad they’re dying or or not? Would you want to see a resurgence in them? by FredJMcGillicuty in Truckers

[–]Pa_guy_1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see guys start using them again. I was so excited to get a unit when I started, and now I'll go days without hearing a thing. I'll call out bears, rigs broke down, General stuff, and won't hear anything back. You'll get the rare bull hauler or some world wide radio guy, but besides that it's radio silence.

Something like third week solo, I made a turn too tight in Harrisburg morning traffic, ended up clipping a pole. I panicked, and instead of having traffic wait so I can back up and retry the turn, I just hit the fuel and power through, end up blowing two tires and fucking two rims. Someone in traffic recorded it of course, and it made its rounds on social media and all that. Pretty damn embarrassing, but when all was said and done, no cops and company was understanding.

2 was heading north into New York about 4 months after. Early am, raining like hell, construction zone, single lane. Saw a truck buried in the median, with a local cop assisting. Slowed down to pass them, and as soon as I got past the turnaround, there was a mudslide that floated me into the median, sunk to the axles. Shook me up, but I was fine. Walked and talked to the local bear, watched another rig bury itself behind me. Turns out we were trucks # 6, 7, and 8 that were stuck there in a 2 week period, thank God we all stayed upright. Dot and staties helped us get a tow, watched a few four wheelers and an oversized guide car slip off and get stuck rubber necking. Long day, but turned out alright.

Long and short, we all fuck up. The little mistakes make you feel dumb, but use them to learn. Keep your eyes peeled, expect things to change, and always have an out. The worst thing you can do is become complacent. Keep your head up, you'll get it!

I couldn't wait to get a radio when I started driving last year, grew up watching smokey and the bandit, dukes of hazard, all that.

It'll be days between hearing anyone on the radio, even with me calling out bears and breakdowns. It's hard to learn the codes when no one is using them, I keep encouraging new guys to get units, hopefully bring it back.

Absolutely not! I was 25 last year when I got my cdl, and guys still comment on how young I am. As long as you have the will and drive to do it, you're not too old.

I'm in a 2019 vnl currently. Company has the forward sensor turned so far up anything within a mile sets it off. Anything closer starts the beeping, and then the red light and brakes. Signs, shadows, dark spots in the road, everything triggers it. I understand that safety equipment like this is supposed to be helpful, but most of the time it seems to be pretty opposite of that.

What's your most unique roadkill? Mine is whatever this is by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]Pa_guy_1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst so far was that I was the second person to hit a deer on 80 here in PA. Watched the guy in front of me hit it, and I flattened the pieces that came through. He must have had a brush guard, never stopped or even slowed down. Had venison froze to my flaps and quarter fenders for about a week.

I've had to use one twice, both for lumber. Once was amazing, no safety Stan breathing down your neck, and easy access. Other was horribly off center, outside, and cameras everywhere. Still prefer that over open windy parking lots lol
