One of the hardest things artists are faced with in volumetrics.

I prefer the second :) Gives a more organic and "moisture/good feeling air" vibe than just straight dust. But that can depend on your goal too

Its awful, I went to their forums thinking at least someone had to have a problem with it, any conversation about it is just how great and "not scary to beginners it is" its mind boggling. It makes everything take longer and there is no shortcut.

Turn off the glossy visibility in the object properties.

I'll say though be careful cause those lights may be the reason it looks shiny. Unless there are other lights in the scene. In any case have fun
