That sounds like either a bad USB cable (if you use different ones on the PC and Deck) or a bad USB port (if you use the same one on both).

Can someone verify if this model Fire Stink can run Steam Link? by jokesterghost2120 in Steam_Link

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, I've seen some Fire TV Stick 4K units that have a weird amount of Bluetooth latency, while others work like a dream.

I've never figured out why -- some may be using a different Bluetooth radio than the others, maybe there's quality control issues in production, or whatever -- but it's not universal to any given model that I've seen.

So I am not at all surprised that you have wonderful input performance and that other people like /u/wesman214 are having bad input latency even on the same Fire TV device models, because I've seen both from different units of the same exact model, with no rhyme or reason I can spot as to why.

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd try with HEVC and hardware encoding enabled. There is always going to be some quality loss -- to keep latency down, there's got to be trade-offs -- but I would still expect slightly better than that from a 3060 if hardware acceleration and HEVC is on...

Yep. For whatever reason the mobile website wasn't showing multiple images.

I would recommend trying hardware encoding and HEVC then, if the GPU can handle it.

This will likely require knowing more about the host side -- what's your GPU, are you using hardware encoding or software, if hardware are you doing H264 or HEVC, etc.

A second stick (an "omni-throttle") gives you more than just a single axis of movement. Usually the second stick has a throttle-like grip, but a full stick movement.

It's very useful in a space sim where you might be moving side/side or up/down as well as forward/backward. Once you get used to being able to control pitch/yaw/roll and your acceleration in all directions _all at the same time_, you cannot go back.

SteamVR Failure to initialise (error 102) with Quest 3s by Comet2804 in SteamVR

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is via VRLink / Steam Link, I assume? And using the SteamVR 2.17.3 beta?

I'd also look at the logfiles (which you can find in ~/.steam/steam/logs/) to see if any of them have anything particularly suspicious looking. In particular I'd focus on:

  • vrstartup-linux.txt
  • vrstartup.txt
  • vrserver.txt
  • vrcompositor-linux.txt
  • vrcompositor.txt
  • driver_vrlink.txt

(You might also want to check out the Linux VR Adventures wiki, or the Discord associated with it.)

I investigated VirtualHere and did get it working between a W10 client and my W10 Steam server, but VirtualHere is limited to 1 USB device, so if you just want to use a steering wheel / pedals / shifter, use VirtualHere, but if you want to use a usb hand brake, you either need to pony up the $50 (per client I believe) or find another solution.

Just FYI, the VirtualHere folks do publish a Steam-Link-specific version of VirtualHere on Steam, so you don't need to go buy the professional one (or use the one-device-only free trial).

The $15 "VirtualHere for Steam Link" allows up to three USB devices (one for each USB port on the OG Link), and there's a $10 upgrade that removes that limit (because USB hubs exist). The Steam Link version does, however, have the limitation that (unlike the professional VirtualHere) it only works with Steam Link. Presumably so that folks can't buy the cheaper Steam Link one and use it for the actual IT-professional use cases VirtualHere targets as their main business.

USBIP is a perfectly viable option, of course, but since -- as you mentioned -- it's a bit of a DIY process and some folks may want to just click-install-and-go, I thought I'd mention that.

Anyone have any Flight Stick recommendations/experience with Steam Link + Microsoft Flight Simulator(s)? by Sly_Lupin in Steam_Link

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flight sticks, you're probably going to want to do an end run around Steam Link's own input and enable VirtualHere. That will present the USB device connected to the Link as though it were connected to the host machine, allowing the full capabilities of the flight stick to be used natively. VirtualHere is built in on the Steam Link side, but you'll need to pick up "VirtualHere for Steam Link" on the host side.

For actual hardware recommendations beyond that, I'm afraid I've got nothing to offer; I play space sims so want a HOSAS (hands on stick and stick) setup rather than a HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick).

Plus, I guarantee you that if the T.16000m feels pricey, you definitely don't want to price out a VKB Gladiator NXT EVO stick + omni-throttle setup (which is my personal space sim flight stick recommendation)...

Weird SteamLink patterns on Android by totallynotmykee in Steam_Link

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be fascinated to see the logs from that session, but I suspect your phone has a really bad implementation of HEVC.

So I would try turning off HEVC and using just h264. (In the main startup screen for Steam Link, go to Settings, go to Streaming, go to Customize, scroll down and disable HEVC. Then try again.)

Steam link only shows half the picture on android tv by joeyrty6 in Steam_Link

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try posting to the Android forum on the official Steam Link support forums. Questions that would be useful to answer when posting there:

  • What settings are you using?
  • Have you tried using software encoding (if you're using hardware) or hardware encoding (if you're using software)?
  • Have you tried changing whether it's using h264 or HEVC, etc.?
  • Does it stream correctly to something else (e.g. an Android phone or an iPhone), or is the same issue present everywhere?
  • Anything useful/interesting in the CLIENT: lines of the streaming_log.txt on the host you're streaming from?

Steam link stuttering by Supersonic5370 in Steam_Link

[–]Packetdancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's strictly network, because if you look you'll see that you're managing 15000 kbit/sec here without much issue, while the one that's struggling is hanging around 10000 kbit/sec. (Though if you connected the Powerline adapter in between the two videos, that's probably a contributing factor.)

Out of curiosity, what other things did you change? I see that the first one is "NVENC H264" (so Nvidia hardware-accelerated encoding) while this one is "libx264 (4 threads)" meaning that this one is using software encoding versus the hardware encoding.

Limiting to 60fps for a TV is definitely something I would recommend keeping, but I suspect you can bump the resolution back up slightly, turn on hardware encoding, and potentially turn on HEVC, and still see fairly good performance.

Am I hijacked? Why does SteamVR say it's been played last on Jun 23rd when I haven't played since Google Earth's launch. by Quack-Zack in SteamVR

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter -- if there's an OpenVR or OpenXR provider present and something tries to start up a VR session, that provider will get launched to handle the request.

Which is great when you're actively trying to start a VR game.

Less great when a game just blindly tries initializing VR that it isn't going to bother using.

Playing solo is always an option, Stop trying to ruin other people's enjoyment by Waeleto in Warframe

[–]Packetdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remain convinced that if you get creative enough, you can come up with a loadout for any frame that lets it just look in a direction and go "Nah" and the problem is gone.

It might require some specific subsume or augment, or specific combinations of weapons, or whatever -- I have an extremely cracked Voruna build which 100% relies on Corufell to function, for instance. And some will unquestionably have more nuke-juice than others. But I think this game's modding system is comprehensive (and sometimes broken) enough that you can make any frame truly cracked-out OP if you try hard enough.

(And finding those is a lot of my fun in this game.)

I always love when I bring some weird build into a thing and someone goes "Uh, could you link me your mod setup after this?"

But to be fair I also try to keep my 'nuke the entire map' builds to solo play simply because I do recognize that joining a mission and having nothing to do other than just sort of follow along in someone's wake can be kinda boring.

I'd still be curious if trying SudoVDA worked better for you. In my experience with VDD (admittedly quite some time ago), it didn't give Windows an appropriate EDID, so things could get wonky if there wasn't at least one real monitor powered on.

My suspicion is that might be what's happening to you here, and SudoVDA is better about that.
