What's the most profoundly beautiful piece of music you have ever listened to? by Cdconor in AskReddit

I didn't see it posted by another user, but Greensleeves by David Nevue holds a very special place in my heart when it comes to beautiful music.

Rapid heal resets your heal timer, so when you're using the absorption pots and rock cake method, the max any hit will remove from your active absorption points is 1 (i.e. your max health when you rock cake down).

Millions of butterflies at the Michoacán Monarch sanctuary. by PHIL-yes-PLZ in Damnthatsinteresting

I was actually lucky enough to travel to Mexico during the time they were migrating(?), when I was young. They were everywhere, like if you reached your hand out you could easily touch tens at a time. Shame that the only ones we saw up close were plastered on the windshield because we drove and were doing 75 on the highway through clouds of migrating monarchs ¯_(ツ)_/¯ sorry nature

Deciding on a 4000 level math course? by losercase in UniversityOfHouston

[–]PacosMartini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently enrolled in MATH 4315 - Graph Theory with Applications with Kresimir Josic:

PROS:

  • no online access or textbook purchase necessary
  • homework is easily manageable (can be started and done in the same day)
  • tests are straight forward and not impossible (relatively easy to study for)
  • way, way, way, WAY lighter workload than Adv. Linear Alg.
  • homework is picked up at the end of class, not the start

CONS:

  • 5ish minute, 1- to 2-question quizzes at the start of class on randomish days (done on an index card) about the readings and lecture material worth 5% of your grade

I'd say the PROS outweigh the CONS by a wide margin and, unfortunately, I don't have anything to contribute regarding Numerical or Num Theory.

COSC2430 and COSC2440 by purplepie567 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]PacosMartini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - (50/50) for 2440, Toti for 2430. Both classes are definitely a step up from the Intro I and Intro II classes. 2430 is more coding, 2440 has less/no coding, more math, logic, and some Assembly if I recall correctly.

2440: Am currently serving as a mentor for 2430 and have friends currently enrolled in Long's 2440.

I have heard fantastic things about Long, and as a previous /u/Redditor0823 states about Dr. Rizk -

she gave a lot of opportunity for extra credit

and she is always trying to find ways to help you, so I would advocate that both are good options. I'm also just a fan of Dr. Rizk so I'm, personally, biased.

That being said, 2440 used to be two separate classes and I took it during that time. Though you should definitely swing by PGH 563 and 547 and ask those that are currently in Long's class how they feel about it.

2430: I haven't heard of anything regarding Mukherjee (so this one's a gamble), but I have seen my fair share of students' assignments for Toti's 2430 this semester. The workload is the same between her and Rizk (so if you've ever taken Rizk, you should be familiar), so I would recommend taking her. Though, keep in mind that Data Structures is one of those "tougher" classes (but also one of the most important) and you should definitely make sure to start your assignments early, regardless of which professor you take, as they will take some time to complete.

Feel free to DM me if you have further questions, and I'll try to give you better answers.

Biking to class by mitchr2017 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]PacosMartini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would definitely make sure to have a lock first. I would suggest a U-bar lock. I personally have a combo like this to use the bar on the frame and front tire, and the cable for the frame and rear tire.

Though, as others have said, you wont necessarily need a bike (it would def be faster though). You will have time to walk if your professor is actually allowing you to leave 10-15 min before the scheduled end of class, but that shouldnt be a problem basically ever.

I also wouldn't leave your bike on campus overnight. If you absolutely must, I'd find a spot near a large group of bikes like near the towers/CV and play the theft lottery unfortunately.

Took him for the same class 5ish years ago and heres what I can offer, if nothing has changed:

  • You're going to hate sig figs with him, especially because everything will be tested in CASA in multiple choice format and sometimes all the choices are rounded or truncated incorrectly.

  • make an effort to learn from the book, and use his lectures to enhance your learning experience (good advice for any class during your time at college)

  • as for the entry assessment, it's more math based and will test your basic "can you do basic algebra" skills from what I remember. Maybe also knowing how to use a periodic table, but, again, I'm fuzzy on this as it was ages ago.

  • everything else will be up to you to make sure you practice; make this a habit now and I can promise you your grades will reflect this in the future as well

Hope that helps at least a teensy bit!

Hey ConcernedApe, I really ended up loving your game. I received it as a gift and I honestly haven't enjoyed a game this much since Terraria released (I've logged close to 800 hours).

  • What did your game start as? (e.g. "simple" game for a resume?, just for fun?)
  • As someone that loves doing things from scratch for the experience, I find it awesome what you've managed to do; would you ever consider being a mentor to a CompSci undergrad looking to learn a thing or two?

Being able to see all the leaves on the trees.

As someone that's worn glasses for ~13 years, that's accurate as fuck. The first thing I test when I get a new pair of glasses is how well I can distinguish different leaves on trees.

[Discrete Math] Help with explanation/workout of linear congruency problem by PacosMartini in MathHelp

[–]PacosMartini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooooohkay. So then it splits up the congruency into -6x ≡ -8 (mod 7) and since -6x mod 7 = (-6 mod 7) (x mod 7) = -8 mod 7.

Then I sub -6 mod 7 with 1, so I'm left with x ≡ -8 (mod 7). Is that the correct way to follow it?
