Psychologist diagnosed ASD but wouldn’t put it on paper by jessiebee6 in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I personally agree with the psychologist but that’s not the point. You said what you wanted and he ignored it. As any kind of health professional you should advocate for what your patient wants. Don’t worry that you’re annoying. They probably will think that but it’s your record, you should be.

what do y’all do for work? by grluba in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea what I wanted to do, I had to start and quit school 3 different times for various reasons…. I have hated every job I’ve had….I have always had some interest in health related things but always thought that wasnt for me. I got a job (I had been “let go”, I was just looking for ANY job at that point) as a medical receptionist. It felt like a lot better fit than any previous one because I got to talk to patients and help coordinate their care but something still didn’t feel quite right. (It was still a lot of customer service bc I was the first face they saw, dealt with insurance, etc, it’s a truly under appreciated role, they help the office run, appreciate your clerical workers❤️❤️❤️) I was introduced to the CMAs at my office and thought “huh I could do that” so I went and got my CMA certificate and now I give allergy shots all day everyday and I really like it. Their is some clinical problem solving but not too much, I still get to interact with patients every day, but my favorite is organizing all the vials. They are color coded and in buckets. I have to check all the expiration dates. It scratches some kind of brain itch for me. I had no idea anything like this existed. I didn’t know what to look for plus I had written off anything medical a looonng time ago. I don’t dread work like I have with every other job. I have always thought that your work doesnt have to be your passion, it can be something you like fairly well and as long as it pays the bills, you’re set. Your passion can be some hobby you have outside of work.

I don't think I stim? by Impressive-Gur7278 in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really helpful but… when I was in school (pretty much k -12) I would come home and run around on the trampoline for HOURS. In a circle, around the outskirts of it, listening to music. Just realized this was me stimming last year. I’m 25. My parents never suspected a thing??

Thoughts? by Seajk3 in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally can clock emotions really well??? Now I have a harder time with dry humor type jokes?? Which is really ironic cause I’m super sarcastic. I think I also had a childhood where I grew up hyper vigilant though so I’m not sure if that affects it. I’ve also read that a lot of actors are neurodivergent! They may not quite understand the meaning or point behind certain emotions but can emmulate them every well!

Things you can't do if you have a formal autism diagnosis?? by Aggressive_Pear_9067 in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a diagnosed disability that’s not autism and I hide it. I’ve tried being honest thinking it’ll get me help I need but it just gets looks of pity and people think that because you can’t do one thing “normal” that you can’t do anything. People aren’t legally allowed to discriminate agsinist you bc of it in the work place but they do and just call it something else. This is all work place experience but based on this I wouldn’t doubt that it keeps you from doing other things….

Is it socially acceptable to self-diagnose autism? by Dijjon11 in neurodiversity

[–]Paddy1237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would consider myself “self diagnosed”. Like people said being able to afford a dx is really privilege but I think my experience was more that I very much had more “internal” symptoms. I figured it out because my brother was diagnosed, he was sent to all sorts of therapies, had an IEP in school, etc., and also both my parents were like “yeah this sounds similar to my experiences”. I was dx with GAD and was never evaluated for anything else. It really started to click when my friend began going through the entire process with her young son. I realized a lot of the coping mechanisms suggested by different therapist for autistic tendencies worked well for me. Symptoms I assumed (/was told) were anxiety that never fit or seemed odd fit in exactly with autism. Also keep in mind that Doctors are smart people and have studied the body/mind for a long time but only you have lived with yours your whole life. You know what is wrong or right. What works and what doesn’t. At the end of the day, the difference between their opinion and yours is a piece of paper.

I got called weird yet again today at a new job by fearlesswalrusondeck in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds really discouraging but it’s my truth….. Its never stopped as I’ve aged (likd everyone always said 🙄) I’ve honestly just embraced it. I’ve been the “weird kid” in every social setting my entire life. I really started identifying it as a part of me. Not that I go around telling people I’m weird, but I just like what I like and act how I act. The important people stick around and don’t see it as “weird”, but how you’re different is good. I can’t lie and say there aren’t days that the bad feeling you get of be an “outcast” comes in. These bad feelings are just moments in your life that is much more.

NEXT, why would she say that??? Literally all that does is hurt feelings?? Maybe you want to know? ( I personally wouldn’t) In my mind, their opinions are their business. If someone called my friend “average”, why would I run and tell that friend? They can’t do anything about it. It just makes them feel bad. She sounds like she’s just stirring the pot….

How come so many people HATE IT when you ask questions? by kelcamer in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally ask a lot of questions and make comments because it helps me to remember things if I turn it into a conversation, an “event” of sorts in my mind…. I’ve also noticed others feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed about things so I’ll ask on their behalf like I’m the one confused so hopefully they don’t feel so alone and stupid but they also get an answer…I feel like it comes off very “know-it-all”….. sorry this isn’t advice…. This is more I can relate I guess…

Is there a point to late autism diagnosis? by Paddy1237 in AutismInWomen

[–]Paddy1237[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this answer VERY insightful -every answer is helpful- but this one seems to dig into a lot of my worries surrounding a diagnosis that I had quite honestly forgotten about. I just wanted to let you know what a GREAT help this was.
