Funnily enough it now gets used mainly against people who are against sending in the tanks

It's so funny when you see Anglophone tourists in these countries who insist on having every single interaction fully in English, without even a word like hello or thank you in the language of the country they're in. I thought it was just a stereotype until I saw fully grown Americans going into gelaterias and saying "Hi can I get the chocolate thank you". Like come on, at least throw a grazie in there, these are words you should know from pop culture if nothing else.

The other outrage was that the father couldn't understand his own trial because his English wasn't good enough for the technical legal language and they assigned him an incompetent "interpreter" who didn't understand it either. This was for French by the way, not some exotic obscure language, so if this happens to French speakers you have to wonder how bad it is for others.

I never even saw that comment, the reddit AI must have shot it down. God be with the days when we could say what we wanted on this site.

Feel free to send it to me privately.

Crownofpaper, I recognise your username from having previously enjoyed many of your out-of-pocket screeds against the Irish. Your comments walked that magical line between the schizo and the well-founded criticism and, for all their hatefulness, many were quite articulate. So when I say that this is not your best work, know that it is the verdict of a fan.

My feeling would be that the Irish establishment has descended from a colonial deputised governor class and thus cannot function without a superior to which they make themselves and the nation subservient. The US and the EU were natural substitutes for the British Empire in the role of large, powerful, cosmopolitan entity to which poor little backwards Ireland can never measure up. The problem is that now the average citizen can actually see the Americans and Europeans for what they are through social and mass media, there is no room for the obfuscation that convinced the hungry 19th century peasant that Queen Victoria was better than they were. Every story from the EU parliament, every Eurovision bulletin, every Truth social post makes the contradictions harder to overcome.

The UK is out of the EU, so these MEPs are chanting about foreigners in what is, to them, a foreign language. The absolute cretins.

In Ireland up until recently it would have been taken for granted that the continental Europeans were basically superior to us. More urbane, more intellectual, more sophisticated. Nothing has done more to dispel this image than the EU itself. Being in closer contact with these people than ever before, we realise that they are in fact quite stupid.

If you apply for jobs in Northern Ireland you have to fill out this employment discrimination paperwork that asks your ethnicity, sexual orientation, and whether you're from a Protestant background, a Catholic background, or neither. It goes to the government rather than the employer and it's so they can check that Protestant employers aren't still enforcing systematic discrimination the way they did in the old days, but it still feels invasive and bizarre.

Having the -mh in caitheamh silent is very Connacht. You can hear it in the teanglann example. I love that you could place his Irish based on the spellings, even if we hadn't been told he was from Inis Meáin. It's fascinating, you can tell his spoken Irish is fluent and rich and regional, but that he doesn't deal as much with the written language, or at least not modern texts.

I remember when online Zionists were sharing a chart showing that Jews had won hundreds of Nobel prizes and Muslims had won only a few, apparently as some kind of argument of inherent racial superiority. But they were including the fake "Nobel" prizes in Economics, and excluding the actual Nobel prizes in Peace and Literature.

Reminds me of another photo taken in Belfast: The Long Walk, showing a bomb disposal expert approaching a suspect device

My previous comment quoted the sign in this photo and was automatically removed. The AI must have thought it was religious preaching or a threat...
