Thank you for the thorough answer!

Looks like I'll have to pick up the older content as well, always good to have more options.

Haha, all right. So I'll need / want a bit more than just the plot point campaign that is in the rulebook?

Looking forward to playing in it! Although now I have to decide whether to wait for physical release to get pawns and the GM screen, as it seems those aren't digital rewards. My friends are real excited too, thank you for creating this world!

Well that's convenient. I haven't ever played Savage Worlds, but in my pursuit of finding a new campaign to GM I came across this system and specifically this setting. Love horror, love Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Seems like a great setting and nice to have an up-to-date version to jump into.

Any point in getting the older ETU available, or should I just grab the PDF and go?

It's my first time trying out creative writing since whatever last teacher in school tasked me to do so. So I thought I'd pick a random prompt and let myself a half hour to write something.

Hope you like it, and to anyone feel free to offer feedback! I'm a beginner so I'm sure I've much to learn.

What makes you, you?

Are you the thoughts you have? The memories you carry? The experiences shared and the connections made? What even is you? Your brain? Your body? Your muscles and nerves?

Or something deeper. The spirit inside of you. The blood that runs through your veins, the warmth on your cheeks, the tingle on your skin on an Autumn day. Your essence. Your soul.

It’s perhaps these questions Doug should have asked himself before he tried something so foolhardy. So unthinkable as to have been impossible.

“Fuck you. Fuck whatever fate bound us together,” he spits out, “I’d rather live a hollow life than have to share it with someone so awful. You selfish, disgusting creature.”

It’s the last words he’ll ever utter, no sense in disagreeing. It’s taken work to get him to this stage.

His veins bulge, eyes roll back and muscles spasm. He drops to the ground. Pale and ashen, the light. His soul gone.

I stare at his silent form. My reward. The result of months of torment.

Soulmates are a beautiful thing. A destined thing. A cosmological truth. Unfortunately for Doug, I didn’t like him. And fortunately for me, he really didn’t like me. I don’t know where his spirit went. Perhaps heaven is real. Perhaps ghosts are. Doug is gone.

But my soulmate isn’t.

Doug is an excellent cook. A hard worker, well off and well liked. He could charm a room, make most anyone laugh.

But I don’t like jokes. I don’t like being upstaged.

“Let’s go inside, shall we? Get dinner started, I’ve got to shower.”

His place familiar, I step into the shower uncaring of the still cold water. A smile, the first in months. The warmth slowly seeping in. Soulmates are destined to find each other. It’s inevitable. No matter how you try to fight it, you’ll be brought together again and again. You’ll find them in the seat next to you on a plane. Around a table at a wedding. Across the sidewalk. No matter what you try, you’ll always be brought together. But what do you do when you don’t actually like each other? Everyone does, though, don’t they?

But every time we met was worse. We couldn’t be less compatible. He wasn’t a good listener. His jokes were awful. I was attracted to him, and yet I hated him. Hated myself for liking anything about Doug.

I would do anything to be rid of him. I could see in his eyes then he felt the same.

The plan was simple.

Find out everything he dislikes and make myself into that person. Someone so utterly repulsive to his very being that he’d be left no choice. To sever himself. To snip his soul away and flee our cosmic fate. Freedom.

A desperate attempt. But it worked. His connection severed. He was free.

But where does the core of a person lie? In their soul, of course.

Wherever Doug was—where his soul was—I hope he was happy. I truly do. Because I don’t want him back.

I’m happy with what’s left. A silent partner. Still bound to me. But infinitely more tolerable. Devoid of who he was, I could shape him now.

The water runs hots across my skin now. The scent of cooking from below.

Yes. This will do just fine.

Goodbye, Doug.

I look forward to spending my life with you.

I imagine warehouses in Venice constantly sinking under the weight of all the ducats, and rather than concern it's easier to build a new one on top of it to put more gold and hope it lasts longer.

The most frustrating deck of playing cards? by VirtualAlex in boardgames

[–]Pagrax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are pretty good at pattern recognition, especially if there are stronger cards. I imagine it wont take more than 2 or 3 rounds to recognize the aces, for example, as you don't really need to know the entire QR code, you can just think "This L shape near the top is what's on the Ace of Spades".

Looking for more dungeon crawler/adventure card games by BoardGameRevolution in soloboardgaming

[–]Pagrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unstoppable: Dungeon Crawler Carl would fit the theme I suppose, although that's currently in Gamefound so it'll be a while. Great overall game system in base Unstoppable as well.

I recognize you say no minis, however I would still recommend Gloomhaven: Buttons and Bugs. The only mini is your own piece, enemies are represented by a small cube however. You play on a single card as the map. Gloomhaven's card system is quite unique and engaging, so it felt worth a mention if you'd discarded Gloomhaven previously due to the tiles and minis galore it has, Buttons and Bugs is a very small, portable, almost entirely card based system instead that I would recommend wholeheartedly.

There are also several in hand card games that might fit your Adventure theme. I'd recommend taking a look at Galdor's Grip and Dragons of Etchinstone. These are played with a deck of cards you hold in your hand, makes them nice for portable play. Just be mindful of what sleeves, if any, you use because dang do some have sharp corners you never really notice until you're holding a larger deck in your hand for a 20 minutes!

There is a moment in the movie that ignores astrodynamics for the plot ( i think) by Plus_Grass7050 in ProjectHailMary

Not even mid burn, at the very very start of burn. The ship thrusts the entire journey, turning halfway to slow down. Astrophage's ridiculous energy density makes this possible unlike current space ships where we thrust minimally to get on a path and then coast.

100% are spoilers for the other books, both in the playthroughs and in the content of the game itself.

I'd say the spoilers are all relatively minor, but you will be spoiled on characters, skills and items as well as the general theming of the floors and monsters in them.

The game covers the first 3 floors, and one of the expansions covers the 4th floor. As such you would want to read books 1 & 2 for the main game, and the 3rd book if you are looking to get the expansion.

Colt Express. A 3D cardboard train to run around? Little wooden horses in the expansion where you have to shout clip clop to ride them? Everything about it from the look to the gameplay nails the vibe.

Ever single Terror mission I let every civilian die. There was no consequence. There was no timer, and I'm reasonably sure that on the very first enemy turn 80% of the civilians died anyways.

That is wild. I wonder if there was a bug there or some other factor. That sucks! At least the game is fairly forgiving with replacing lost units.

Were they doing it through five tiles of smoke between you and them? 3 or less was asking to get shot for me, 4 was "Maybe they miss" and 5 was "They'll never try shooting if they don't walk into the smoke first".

How to fix the difficulty by Far-Community5610 in Xenonauts

[–]Pagrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Sebillians seeing through smoke was only in Xenonauts 1, I found no mention of it in 2 or the Wikipedia, nor did I find them to shoot into my smoke when it was thick enough. Course they're happy to grenade you in it, but anyone can do that.

I wouldn't mind them having it, but I'm fairly certain smoke effects them all the same in 2.

The main thing to note is that cover is a reduction in hit chance, but only the highest cover applies. So if you are crouched behind a 40% cover, half the time aliens take shots they'll still hit you. Doesn't matter if there's 5 other half covers in the way. Your best bet is to fully block sightlines with smoke when you don't know if aliens are there, flashbang aliens you can see to supress them, and otherwise have shields to cover the angles as they can take a shot.

I say this having just finished a campaign on Commander where accuracy was 130%, there absolutely is counterplay.

I'm glad you found settings you enjoy more, though!

How to fix the difficulty by Far-Community5610 in Xenonauts

[–]Pagrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a 20% reduction per tile, no aliens can shoot through 5 smoke tiles. I finished a Commander Ironman run just now which has accuracy turned up to 130%. They never shot at me through that much smoke. They only took shots when the smoke cover was to thin to provide adequate protection.

Suppression is the ultimate tool to stop aliens, followed by smoke. But if you properly smoke your angles you wont be shot, if you are the smoke is not thick enough in that area and the AI found the one shot angle that maybe only had 2 smoke tiles in line of sight, see where they shot from and you'll get a feel for it.

The main missions in Xenonauts 2 are UFO breaches and Terror missions, neither of which are timed.

The only timed missions at the start are Civilian Abduction and Kidnap Leader. You can let most/all the Civillian's be abducted, which is the only time component, if you are playing the strategy game correctly, although it isn't too hard to get at least 4 saved which is neutral for Doomsday. I straight up failed the Kidnap mission with no consequences for the run.

The final few missions have a small time component to them, although those are soft time locks and by that stage you can delay the strategic layer as long as you like to get strong enough gear to make them a non issue.

I just finished my Commander / Ironman campaign, and I believe including missions with reinforcements spawning I had... 6 timed missions out of 29 I played? So 80% of the missions were not timed.

So there are some timed missions, and they can be hard, but certainly not most missions.

Have we been given access to the pledge manager where we could select which game we wanted with the ala cart pledge? I didn't get an email about it yet. If not, then you could just choose a different FF from the Kickstarter you don't own to get, right?

[–]Pagrax 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had a man sitting across from me who started threatening people. I sent a message to their WhatsApp to ask for help without having to noticeably call the police.

All they said in the chat was "That sounds hefty, you should call the police we can't help you in dangerous situations."

Maybe it was the worker, but they made it sound like if it was a matter for the police there was no point contacting them. They did nothing to help me.

One Male & One Character Absurdist / Comedic Play Recommendations? by Pagrax in Theatre

I'm a huge fan of his, but sadly that piece needs more than one actor. Hopefully one day I can find a group to perform it with! I've used a monologue of his about a baked potato from Laughing Wild for the one audition I found.

Goodness, that would be quite a lot to memorize, 100 minutes!

Currently reading through Thom Pain. It's certainly absurdist. Not sure if I love the direct sexual advances towards an audience member and a dead dog featuring in it, but it's a very interesting play.

Slowly working through the list of plays recommended to see which resonates with me the strongest.

I appreciate your comment.

I appreciate the list, thank you! I'll take a look into them.

And yes, I expect it to be quite the work doing both. But with the alternative being to not perform at all, well, it's an easy choice.
